“ ----- okay, maybe you CAN surprise me,” vanya admits, taking a moment to process the unexpected piece of trivia she now possesses. her tongue slips over dry lips and she adjusts her posture, trying to carefully find her way back to the initial subject. “although i was really thinking more along the lines of the whole... psychic thing. good to know, though. in case i decide to stay at a massachusetts b&b anytime soon.”
@apochestral —— VANYA HARGREEVES / STARTER CALL.
“you play violin?” he approaches her carefully, almost as if he’s unsure that he wants to be having this conversation at all. after asking if she plays, he salutes a belated hello to her, then continues. “i used to love violin music. it seems really difficult to play.”
“i do, yeah,” she answers easily. it’s funny, seeing his uncertain approach; she recognizes it. it’s a behavior that mirrors her own. she is unwittingly disarmed by his demeanor, and she finds herself a little FRIENDLIER than she would normally be with a complete stranger.
“you’d be surprised. i teach lessons, so it can’t be that hard.”
@apochestral / sc.
❛ it’s called a JOKE. you’re allowed to laugh. ❜
“oh, uh, right -- right. sorry. funny.”
it wasn’t at all funny, if she’s being honest. his brand of humor seems to be... UNIQUE. but it doesn’t seem worth initiating a confrontation over. she assumes he’s late teens, maybe early twenties? still young enough to find entertainment in shock value, she supposes.
@becomedeviant
it’s easy enough to recognize her. perhaps, if he weren’t running a private investigation on the hargreeves he wouldn’t have recognized her on passing. but alas, this little run-in with vanya wasn’t a complete accident. he had been casing her and her family for some time. learning each of their routines and daily activities within a couple of days. he hadn’t, however, planned on her to notice him or more specifically, the many doubles of him spread through the city. when it came to profiling someone it had been proven it was easier to simply create copies of himself to keeps tabs of the person. blinking as if he’s confused, his head tilts to the side in curiosity.
❛ wait…you’re vanya hargreeves, aren’t you? i’ve recently read your book. i must say, i’m a fan. ❜
if it’s meant as a distraction, it succeeds brilliantly. her eyebrows lift, her expression softens, and a hint of what might even be a smile curls at the corners of her lips. even when the book was brand new, it was rare that she was recognized on the street. in truth, even when she had been touring with it and small, sparse crowds would show up to her readings, she can’t remember a time when anyone described themselves as a FAN. it’s so unexpected that it makes her almost self-conscious, despite her quiet delight.
“oh, uh, yea-yeah. that’s me, i’m -- i’m really glad you liked it. a lot of people didn’t, to tell the truth.”
@becomedeviant
❛ it’s no different than a human investigating a human. ❜ he doesn’t mean to sound like smart-ass ( okay, he does but that’s beside the point ) when the young woman is only curious. most humans were, he had found upon being assigned to the DPD, baffled by the idea of an android being actively involved in ongoing criminal investigations. some even hostile to the very idea. it was something connor struggled to understand the reasoning for. would they not prefer that these investigations be handled with top-notch efficacy? hands folding behind him, the RK800 brown eyes briefly flick around the room before settling on vanya.
❛ now…if you could tell me about your family’s android. has grace ever acted strangely? ❜
“ -- right, sorry.”
truth be told, she feels like there’s a little more to it than that, but she doesn’t argue. they have people for this kind of thing, and she assumes that most of them are employed at cyberlife. besides, if the police are allowing it, she assumes they’ve accounted for any possibilities.
his inquiry brings her focus back to the issue at hand, and she notes privately that she’s glad he called her by name. most of the officers she’s spoken to called her, at most, by her model number. BUT SHE’S ALWAYS BEEN MOM TO THE HARGREEVES CHILDREN.
“no. no, she’s never... she’s always taken care of the family. she’s even programmed to administer first aid. she’s been here my whole life. she would never hurt us.”
@apochestral —— VANYA HARGREEVES / CONTINUED.
“right. no, right, i just thought, you know, we’d do the whole… bonding… thing.” he pauses, inhales deeply on the cigarette that’s burning low in his hand, and punctuates by flicking ashes to the ground. it’s always awkward with her— always has been— and he hates it. often times being high will put a buffer between himself and any uncomfortable air that radiates from someone else, but it seems he’s not immune when it comes from one of his sisters. and there’s good reason for that. he’s always been fond of vanya, has always felt somewhere in his heart that they all needed to be better to her. but we were just kids, he thinks, as if that’s a good enough excuse for the way they treated her.
can’t they make it better now? can’t they try? or did their “father” take that from them too?
“allison used to paint my nails, and i guess that’s how we bonded. she’d paint my nails, i’d steal her skirts…” klaus brushes off the one he’s wearing now; it’s not hers, but it is one of his favorites. “that’s bonding, right? normal bonding?” he laughs a little, high and light as he flicks more ashes to the ground. “like we’d know.”
“... i’m sorry, okay? i’m just...” vanya shakes her head, dropping it forward in heavy exasperation. she knows that klaus doesn’t mean any harm; he’s said whatever crossed his mind since he first realized he could use his words to assert himself in an otherwise oppressive household. even so, UNDERSTANDING his behavior doesn’t necessarily make it easier to stomach.
but she desperately wants to bond with him, too.
“you’re right. i have no idea what ‘normal’ bonding is. maybe it is normal. i guess it is. talking about boys... i never did that, you know?” she explains weakly. she knows that klaus’ playful insult wasn’t meant to hurt her, but she can’t help being defensive. “maybe it sounds dumb, but -- i’m a little scared...? because things with leonard are -- honestly, they’re really great, and i just don’t want to ruin it. and i know talking about it won’t actually do anything, but what if it does? so i just want to... protect it, maybe? sorry, i know that’s stupid.”
@noplanchet
THE SIGHT OF HIM IS JARRING. her rational mind immediately points out that it makes sense for him to be here -- klaus’ drug problems started young, and in truth, she is relieved to know that he is seeking some form of help ( whether or not it’s by choice, she isn’t sure, but the sentiment remains. )
however there is another side of her, a purely emotional facet of her psyche, that feels as though she has been invaded. choosing to attend therapy was a large and shaky step for vanya. consenting to group therapy even more so. opening up to strangers was much harder face to face than it had ever been behind her typewriter.
she approaches carefully, worried he might feel as startled as she had. “hey. it’s -- i guess ‘good to see you’ is a little weird, given the situation, huh?”
@telegion
“oh, hey, thanks for stopping by. -- name?”
if he looks at all familiar, vanya’s gaze does nothing to betray recognition. she pulls a book from the largely undisturbed stack -- this signing, like many of the others scheduled by her publisher -- has not been heavily attended. in fairness, she didn’t write the book for the recognition, not really. she wrote it to establish a sense of SELF that she had never learned as a child. even so, it was nice to have company at the table, to think that maybe her words had mattered to someone.
