[TWO SCHOLARS&A BEAST]

recently i had the wonderful experience of writing my first snupin. the fic (of considerable size, i think!) was intended for the wolf&prince fest, organized by the wonderful moderators siobhanhazel and safeplacesnupin

below, author’s note cut!

or deglutinations and verbiages (better understood as a light look over the choices regarding severus snape and remus lupin)

this journey took five months and involved three constant dreams about the setting; it was also inspired by the consequence of having reread donna tartt’s the secret history. although the inspiration appears in a curious way — it is in the book that we meet the eccentric professor, tutor of the main cast, julian morrow, a man of curious and unorthodox manners, well known and skilled in the field of classics and the teaching of traditional languages. it is also in the book that we meet another professor, though this time of psychology, an elderly man who briefly presents opposing views to julian. from this dynamic of controversial interests arose the idea of bringing direct inspirations from tartt’s work while exploring the implications of turning snape and lupin into literature professors.

the writing process was absolutely terrifying. i ended up developing a fairly large background — and none of it is explicitly said. i reference things and leave the reader with the possibility of understanding (and guessing!) what snape and lupin’s past is. it was in this journey of adapting as best as possible while making references to the book canon that the personalities and individual styles of the two protagonists of the short story developed further. that is what we are going to talk about today: curiosities!

in the creation process i made aesthetic choices regarding the versions of the characters.

let’s talk about severus first, an absolute genius in his field of research and, above all, a man who owns many stories and rumors about his enigmatic persona. i wanted to keep the basic premise of the character in the original work — the preference for black or other dark tones, clothes that reveal nothing, a veiled and secret body. i chose inspirations from 19th-century and early 20th-century gentleman’s fashion, though adding a slightly modern air to the clothes. severus will dress with a certain extravagance, preferring many layers, high collars, clothes over clothes, buttons, trousers that delineate nothing of the body shape, and comfortable, austere fabrics. one can also notice in the description the contrast of the clothes with the battered oxford shoes, never replaced; time passes and remus even notices more signs of wear appearing on the famous shoes (which are barely hidden by the edges of severus’s flowing clothes). his hair, tied or loose, is long and dark, black, sliding in a few unbridled strands over his face. he is short, a man of small stature, but no less terrifying. all the strength resides in the heavy gaze. for me, the severus here remains transposed in the representation of an image of the ancient, of a tradition that is contemplated by the modern-reconstructive. he dresses in a somewhat old-fashioned way as a tribute to the foundations of thought and his classical passions, but he does not let himself be entirely swallowed by this “prison model” (oxford! the shoes!). i also wanted him to evoke well the ascetic and androgynous aesthetic of the academic man, in the middle ground between the sensitive and the contemplative and the martial/choleric. for most, the use and choice of wardrobe tends perfectly towards the feminine. his introverted way of writing and his literary concerns reside in the universal anguish of man. severus is, overall, a unique type.

lastly, let’s go to remus, to fables and mythological words, to psychological theories and literary criticism. we don’t have many descriptions in the story about what remus lupin is like — everything happens through his eyes — but i imagine that the implied reveals a lot. i wanted to persist with the imagery of him being dressed in clothes “crumpled by time” (it’s a good analogy for the man) that make him look either docile or gentle. when there are suits, remus wears light or almost dark brown colors, moody, faded. he is always in the company of his cane and limps quite a bit. he rarely uses glasses for reading. his hair is messy and sometimes he combs it. there is a beard stubbornly persisting on his face. his loose or somewhat ill-fitting garments give him the presence of an eccentric type loved by students. remus maintains correspondence with students, writes countless letters, speaks slowly, chooses words with care, has a love for mythology and psychology, is jungian (!), believes in transformation through reading, likes fantastic stories and symbolisms and analogies. he prefers to feel comfortable and avoids thinking about his own appearance. he is the not-so-opposite opposite of severus — they like shared topics and themes and authors, with different thoughts/defenses on similar/same situations. while severus exists using and hand-picking the presentable form that best distances and causes anxiety and respect in the other, remus and his terribly melancholy (contemplative!) absence prefers to exist out there dressed in the most approachable and charismatic way possible, and i can even imagine him quite similar to the fox protagonist of that wes anderson film, “fantastic mr. fox.” even his voice is similar! if severus came out inspired by a mix of oscar wilde, remus probably received undeniable foundations from mr. fox. he is a very singular type, very unique, somewhat cowardly, controversial, who likes to get close to what makes him angry, for he likes to suffer from the liver (as he constantly says).
