I’ve been wondering for a while if Snape’s persistence in chasing the Defense Against the Dark Arts job wasn’t only because of his interest in the dark arts themselves, but also self destructive or suicidal. Death in the line of duty isn’t suicide, so he can’t be called a coward for it.
On the other hand, he was terrified of death in the moment before he died. He didn’t have much zest for life, but who can blame him for wanting to cling onto it when death comes on so suddenly? He also hates not only to be called a coward, but to be a coward, and begging for a suicide job could be seen as an easy way out. I don’t think he is actually suicidal when the books take place. He tells Dumbledore when Lily dies that he wants to die, too, but it was in a moment of enormous grief, distress, sorrow, regret, mourning, et cetera. He may not be happy with life, but I think he does want to hold onto it for its own merit and not just because he has a mission to fulfill. That’s why I’m conflicted about his intense desire to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts even knowing the position is cursed, having experienced the loss of a teacher every year, and believing in the power of Voldemort to curse it. Surely he knows the curse is real. So why apply for the job each year knowing it could even get him killed, in addition to the assurance of it ending badly?
Something I'm never quite sure about is how prevalent the knowledge that it is cursed is. Albus in HBP (and the author confirming it in interviews) says the position was absolutely cursed - but I'm not sure any other character mentions it beyond like... a rumor? a 'Nobody has lasted more than a year for ages. Totally jinxed, I bet.' sorta thing
I suppose if anyone is going to know the truth it'd be Severus, learning about it through Albus or through Voldemort. Or both.
But then why would he want the position so much? It's a reasonable point to bring up. If it ends in at least leaving the school, at most being injured or killed...
If he was desperate to teach The Kids something useful for facing Death Eaters with - why did he want the job so badly before Harry was even at school? He basically lives for that boy's sake, and he hadn't met him yet. Being removed via curse before Harry is... useless.
The only way I can see to read that, if he knows about the curse, is some sort of desperation to escape the situation. Perhaps not necessarily life itself - but Hogwarts maybe?
He was scared of meeting Harry? Scared of seeing Lily's child?
Sure doesn't act scared of him when meeting him, though...
Maybe he thought, if he was affected by the curse, he could try to dismantle it? He is knowledgeable in Dark Arts, he has witnessed Voldemorts magic... but thats a bit of a gamble, isn't it?
That's sorta the only way I can see him knowing about the curse and chasing the job anyway. I struggle to see him managing to mentally twist 'taking a cursed position unnecessarily' into 'not cowardly.
...OR - he DOESN'T know it is cursed, and every year is watching Albus turn him down in favor of people like Quirinus and Gilderoy lol
People he went to school with - and then possibly even taught (though I doubt Gilderoy took NEWT Potions)
The concept of Snape not believing it’s actually cursed, but thinking so little of his DADA coworkers that he finds it completely plausible that they all fail at something he prides himself on.
I can’t imagine that he would want to escape Hogwarts, and with it his promise and his mission. I think that if he were to quit, he’d want to do it properly, but i don’t think it would come to that.
I also don’t think he’d seriously consider breaking the curse. He’s justifiably confident in his abilities, but he’s not cocky enough to think his abilities in charm/curse work match Voldemort’s.
Sometimes when I encounter a difficult question like “why did Snape so relentlessly pursue that position?”, I take a moment to consider the possibility that J.K. Rowling didn’t think about it very hard. Still, as many plot holes as there are, it’s lazy to assume that every blip that confounds me is an error on the part of She Who Must Not Be Named.
Another possibility that just occurred to me is that Voldemort would disengage the curse for Snape so that he could continue teaching at Hogwarts, which is very advantageous to Voldy already, but as the DADA teacher would additionally be advantageous because introduces the opportunity for Snape to incline the students towards the dark arts, making them more interested in joining Voldemort’s cause. Voldemort is complicated. At times he is emotionally driven, and at times he’s very impassive, or appears to be. So I wonder if he would be able to set aside his bitterness towards not being granted to job himself in order to finally get it vicariously through a trusted follower, or if he would keep the same “if I can’t have it, no one can” attitude, even if it’s to his detriment.
Quirrel was working for him, but suffered an ill fate. Still, that could be coincidence. Barty Crouch Jr. also ended up thwarted, but that could also be a coincidence. Umbridge wasn’t working directly for Voldemort, but more bureaucratically beneath him, so it makes sense that the curse worked its magic on her.
I saw this old newspaper clipping modified with AI on Pinterest, and I thought it looked terrible (not to mention my ethical difference of opinion), so I fixed it (even though I think the addition is redundant because the Sensitive man is clearly supposed to represent love).
Shitty things I fixed:
- The use of AI
- The historically inaccurate and stylistically incongruent hairstyle
- The typeface not being bold enough
- The lines not being bold enough
- Line work too clear
- Was ugly; now is less ugly
- Lines too black
- Otherwise inconsistent style (face shape too smooth, eyes too clear, ears are glaringly wrong, shading, lack of collared shirt, typical AI ad historically inaccurate fuckboy face, et cetera)

Trying to come up with a cuter, more juvenile design for a younger Snape newer to his teaching career than what we see in the books. Introducing some softness and baby fat while still keeping him thin with his signature intense and nervous features.
"People who like Snape clearly didn't read the books." "Snape was so much worse in the books." That's not going to work on me. I like him even more in the books.
When Severus can't get over Lily, its because hes a creepy incel that can't take no for an answer but when James harrasses her repeatedly in order for her to date him its because he's a true yearner with golden retriever energy
2.) Takes the house test and gets Slytherin. Is surprised for some reason, but embraces it.
3.) Takes the wand test and gets the most stereotypically Slytherin wand (yew, what Voldemort had).
4.) Wants a Harry Potter roleplay board game. Asks J.K. Rowling to make one (this is Pre Transphobic Mold incident, obviously. Gerard Way is extremely outspoken about his support of the LGBTQ+ community and is part of it, though he doesn’t like to use labels because they’re capitalist big brother devices, or something. He talks about it in other Tweets).
5.) Gushes about Snape. People are shocked and disappointed in the comments somehow even though this is… Gerard Way. Who has posted Sandman fanart on Twitter. And is… Gerard Way.
6.) Defends his interest in Snape by praising character redemption in media, talking about how characters should be a little unsavory, and saying people love Boba-Fett even though he was killer by profession which is objectively way (pun intended) worse than what Snape up to. Talks about not being very interested in goody goody characters. This is apparent if you’ve listened to literally any My Chemical Romance album or read any of his comics.
7.) Unprovokedly starts roleplaying being a Slytherin Hogwarts student on main.
9.) Talks about liking “those floppy hats (that he gave to his mii) because they are the closest thing to a wizard hat you can get away with in public”.
10.) Back on his bullshit a few weeks later because his brother, the beloved and cherished Mikey Way, took the test and got into the same house.

He proceeded to spend the next ten or so tweets talking about how much he likes milk and basically being proship on main about people writing things they enjoy and not getting mad at them about it as long as they are respectful of the people in real life. What a G. …erard Way.
Oh, also, this interaction with Dallon Weekes (who has possibly also read the milk fic):
I looked up “snape” on Twitter and the first result was the official Gerard Way account admiring him in 2016. Check out reblog for more Gerard Way Harry Potter tweets.
