When someone asks you where you're from … do you sometimes not know how to answer? Writer Taiye Selasi speaks on behalf of "multi-local" people, who feel at home in the town where they grew up, the city they live now and maybe another place or two. "How can I come from a country?" she asks. "How can a human being come from a concept?"
The Trung Sisters c 39 AD
Starting in 111 BCE the Chinese sought to gain control over the Vietnamese. For years the Chinese attempted to inflict their culture and laws on the people of Vietnam. This included a patriarchal system which stood in stark contrast to the more equal treatment of the sexes in Vietnam.
In 39 AD, Trung Trac’s husband was executed by the Chinese government. Trung Trac then decided to seek justice. She and her sister, Trung Nhi, gathered an army of 80,000 people to drive the Chinese from their land.
The Trung sisters were said to have charged into battle atop two elephants, swords drawn, leading armies.
In 40 AD Trung Trac was made queen and Trung Nhi was made her royal adviser.
In 42 AD China came back to recapture the region. The Trung sisters and all the people of their country resisted. One notable resistor was a woman named Phung Thi Chinh. She led one of the armies while pregnant. She gave birth at the front, hoisted the baby on her back to continue fighting.
Working mothers fucking rock.
Unfortunately for the Vietnamese, the Trung sisters were defeated. The Chinese clamped down on the Vietnamese hard. The Trung sisters and their loyal friend Phung Thi Chinh followed the tradition of defeated leaders, and threw themselves into a river to drown.
The Trung sisters continued to inspire Vietnamese people despite centuries of foreinge rule. They were admired even through the Vietnam war.
“All the male heroes bowed their heads in submission; Only the two sisters proudly stood up to avenge the country.” - 15th century poem

Jimmie was my first pen pal through Black and Pink Chicago chapter. after he got out this past august, we've become closer friends as he's worked incredibly hard to provide for himself and give to others upon re-entry, despite many hurdles he's had to struggle through. this past weekend, he was unfortunately arrested and then physically injured while in police custody. we need help to raise money for his $500 bond, possible legal fees, and living costs support.
we were able to get jimmie out! getting out of jail and staying out requires money -- every bit helps.
please contribute however much you can and spread the word to help this friend in need who's been directly targeted by the prison-industrial complex!
Now we will count to twelve and we will all keep still for once on the face of the earth, let’s not speak in any language; let’s stop for a second, and not move our arms so much. It would be an exotic moment without rush, without engines; we would all be together in a sudden strangeness. Fishermen in the cold sea would not harm whales and the man gathering salt would not look at his hurt hands. Those who prepare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire, victories with no survivors, would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers in the shade, doing nothing. What I want should not be confused with total inactivity. Life is what it is about… If we were not so single-minded about keeping our lives moving, and for once could do nothing, perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding ourselves and of threatening ourselves with death. Now I’ll count up to twelve and you keep quiet and I will go.

After an aggressive retrial in Yolo County, CA, Nan-Hui Jo, devoted mother and survivor of domestic violence, has been convicted unanimously on charges of “child abduction.” While the judge has agreed to send the case to probation for the next 30 days, she is still under hold by both the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and her deportation is a very real possibility. This could result in permanent separation between Nan-Hui and her daughter, Vitz Da. For more information, visit: http://www.kaceda.org/ .
1. SIGN & SHARE THE *NEW* PETITION: bit.ly/standwithnanhui With updated info that Nan-Hui is under CBP hold as well, we have identified ICE and CBP as both important targets to pressure. 2. CALL IN YOUR SUPPORT @ 10AM PST/1PM EST We have heard an outpour of support from all across the county. Please join our action remotely by calling into the ICE and CBP offices at the time of our action. When nonviolence is preached as an attempt to evade the repercussions of political brutality, it betrays itself. When nonviolence begins halfway through the war with the aggressor calling time-out, it exposes itself as a ruse. When nonviolence is preached by the representatives of the state, while the state doles out heaps of violence to its citizens, it reveals itself to be a con. And none of this can mean that rioting or violence is “correct” or “wise” anymore than a forest fire can be “correct” or “wise.” Wisdom isn’t the point, tonight. Disrespect is. In this case disrespect for the hollow law and failed order that so regularly disrespects the rioters themselves.

This is perfect.
There is the dumb silence of slumber or apathy; the sober silence that goes with a solemn animal face; the fertile silence of awareness, pasturing the soul, whence emerge new thoughts; the alive silence of alert perception, ready to say, “This… this…”; the musical silence that accompanies absorbed activity; the silence of listening to another speak, catching the drift and helping him be clear; the noisy silence of resentment and self-recrimination, loud and subvocal speech but sullen to say it; baffled silence; the silence of peaceful accord with other persons or communion with the cosmos.
