A bit of a short one, but I wanted to get you guys something before the big Saint Denis shenanigans! Hope you’re having a nice summer and if you are a sad little Brit like me, are have survived this past month from hell
aces chapter 15 is about halfway ready, if anyone is still hanging about. i know its been quite a while, i've not been doing very well for the better part of the year and aces hasn't been my priority, but i just want people to know i am still writing, it's just very slow. still, i'm hoping to get a chapter out sometime between now and the end of august.
okay SO when deciding my gender swap names I had three conditions
condition one is that it must start with the same letter
condition two is that it must have the same/similar meaning
condition three is that it must fit the setting of late 1800s america
i didn't wanna pick names that just sounded similar, i wanted names that had shared roots or origins. i also didn't want to go down the root of 'feminising' male names (etc. adding 'a' or 'ie' to the end) unless i had valid reason to do so
so! they actually all turned out to be quite simple
john -> joan
why? john is a very common english name, and joan is a well recognised feminine variant of said name. they have shared hebrew roots, both meaning 'god is gracious'. it fits all my three conditions, and i like it, so joan it is! i like to think she goes by jo as well.
micah -> michaela
this name i was least sure about, as it does fall into the 'adding an a to make a name feminine' trap. HOWEVER! it does meet my three conditions, and i like it.
micah exists as a derivitive of the hebrew name mikha'el (anglicised as michael), meaning 'who resembles god'. at a basic level, michaela is a common feminine variant of the name michael, of which the name micah is derived from.
to me, michaela is a kinda bratty name (no offense to anyone called michaela), and when i think of my version of femmicah, it just fits her so well.
arthur -> anna
reason! arthur is welsh by heritage, and of course, throughout the games there are several references to arthur in relation to king arthur and the knights of the round table. so i wanted a name that occured in this material. now, i am perhaps the furthest thing from an expert when it comes to arthurian legend, but from my investigation there were two names that fit my criteria: amy, or anna.
anna was my choice for two reasons: it is occasionally an alternate name given to morgause, who is often depicted as king arthurs sister AND i just think it suits her much more, as a more masculine but still feminine name.
filled with the sudden urge to go through all 70k words of my fic and fix all the em/en dash/hyphen errors. i've been lazy (just using hyphens because idk the shortcut for em dash on my laptop lol) and its weighing on me....sigh
