Imbolic Ritual

âYou know you really shouldnât be here at night. This place is haunted.â
â I am considered one of the ghosts most of the time, so no problem for me.â
âSkulking around tends to give people that impression.â Harlow tamped down the nogoodbadwrong feeling she was getting for the other woman and held up her emf detector. âBut I doubt the other ghosts feel the same way.â

âDonât get me wrong, itâs all very curious, but I donât have much interest in vampires.â Perhaps she should. They defied the cycle of life and death - at least temporarily - and thus their connection to death was so uniquely them. But something about the pale paper thin skin, glassy nails, and bloody fangs just bothered Harlow. âIâm more interested in natural phenomena.â
âNah, I totally get you. Vampires are pretty problematic creatures in general.â Miller coined in as agreement with Harlow. Or at least attempted to. Half of his words were obscured around one of the donuts that had been left in the community room of the Motherhouse. Powdered sugar lined on his lips lending the effect of an addict on a bender. Dark eyes viewed her curiously through lenses. âWhat kinda natural phenomena? Like, ley lines or magnetic fields? Bermuda Triangle Conspiracies? Elvis?â
Harley nodded along with his words, though her lips quirked at the last on the list. âAll of the above. It all comes down to the same thing - the cycle of life and death. Everything else is just an offshoot of that as people try to subvert the natural order.âÂ
Part of her couldnât blame them - the fear of the unknown was real in most creatures - but they were Talamascan. Such curiosities only drove them to learn more. â
A soft grin spread across the petite mortâs face as she gracefully stepped out of the shadows, making her steps audible to the mortal ear. âThe same way you did mon cherâŠthrough the door.â She said shrugging innocently.
âNow I get to ask a questionâŠâ  A small finger curled around a golden tress of hair that hung down on to her lace dress. âWhy are you here? What business do you have with the dead in here?â
Her grip tightened around the  small leather pouch. She could feel the elements inside digging into her skin through the bag but that was just a reminder - something to ground her in the present so the fear didnât clog her throat and consume her.
âI have a few questions for them.â A beat. âWill that be a problem?â

âCapon vive longtemps!â Harlow winced as the shopkeep closed the door on the person with a yell. The sound of multiple locks clicking in to place seemed to echo around the small empty street, the screech of metal on metal causing her to grit her teeth a bit.
âThe coward lives a long time.â Harley walked up to the stranger and looked from the blank door to them. Immediately she was hit with a sense of dread. This must have been what the owner of the small occult shop had been talking about. âYou wonât get any supplies from anyone around here. You reek like bad news.â

âExcuse me.â Harlow scratched the back of her head nervously as she went over how she should broach the subject with this stranger again.
âItâs a bit of an odd question and I normally wouldnât ask but I really canât lose another one-â she cut herself off from babbling further and turned a bit to point to a barren tree with a multitude of sharp jagged branches that had lost their leaves earlier in the month. Among the branches was the third EMF detector that the order had provided her with. They had assured the short woman that sheâd best hold on to this one. She didnât even want to know what theyâd do if she told them she lost another due to a height deficiency in her genes (clearly not her fault).
âWould you mind?â

âWell arenât you the ever helpful one.â
Catâs voice was a rumble, like a jaguarâs purr; he came to stand beside her and inspected the volumes she was indicating with matched reverence.Â
âHave a bit of fascination for the occasional oddity, do we? Lets have it then. Whatâs your favorite? For the sake of indulging the conversation. Iâm all ears.â
âI try.â His voice made her uneasy in a way that his mere presence hadnât. It had her tense but only for a moment. Within the next second she was back to babbling.
âIf you ever stumble across anything by Aunt Caroline Dye Iâd recommend it. Most people who are the real deal canât write for shit but those books are a good read.â

âHave you ever seen a Wendigo?â Harlow winced at as the inhuman howl ratted the leaves and seemed to echo around the forest. The sound made her stomach drop - all instincts telling her to get the hell out of there. There was intent behind the howl, mocking, with a bit of a laugh at the end. It was enjoying the hunt. And she had no doubt it would enjoy prolonging the kill if it caught either of them.Â
âIâve never seen one in person and if you donât mind Iâd like to continue that trend.â

Harlowâs eyes lit up as she spotted the book the stranger next to her had plucked from the library shelf. She wasnât one who frequented public libraries, even if she needed more information on something. The Talamasca seemed to have an endless list of resources, available almost anywhere. But her signal wasnât exactly perfect in a little podunk town like this one.
âAre you looking for books on the occult?â She asked as she quickly scanned through the books lining the small occult section of this library. Her fingers skimmed the spines of the books with an undue reverence as she bit her lip. âIf youâre looking into ghosts in particular Iâd really recommend this guy.â Harley pulled out a book that seemed fresh - probably from disuse - before her eyes turned back to the shelf.Â
âOr this one if youâre just getting started. Itâs a bit of a intro to all sorts of beasties. There are a lot more practical guides but I doubt youâll find them here.â
