Lovely cover but… an epilogue? Oh please, NO. I have no trust whatsoever in this—whoever is going to pen the story, they’re going to mess up with the last bit of hope the post-Canon fandom—a KanaKane ending.

Let us imagine that—and oh if I’m trying, but accepting the canon also means having to come up with a coherent reading of whatever the heck happened with the ending (regarding the characters’ emotions more than the stupid plot about the invisible and mostly inefficient master manipulator star killer and his demise), so yes what is a flash fic, what is it? Ugh.

This point has been made several times over the course of Oshi no Ko's run but now with the full manga here I keep thinking about Ruby's arc and how the lack of letting her confront the dark realities of the industry she is a willing participant in ends up stagnating both her arc and the story's critique of the entertainment industry as a whole.

Ruby is introduced into the story as a bright eyed young girl wishing to be an idol due to her admiration of them and how Ai- her mother in this life and her oshi in her past life as Sarina got her through her time at hospital up until Sarina died. She wants to be an idol because it is a two lifetimes long dream of hers, a dream she desperately wants to fulfill. Even though she is somewhat aware of the less than rosy reality of being an idol, she wants to be one anyway. And she does! With the help of her family, she ends up forming an idol group in a safe environment and as a result ends up with a very different start to being an idol than Ai- safe and protected.

This is not a bad thing of course! Its good that she has a safety net that she knows will catch her to fall back on and it is definitely good that she was not subjected to how terribly another agency may have treated her. But what this does is also set up the fact that Ruby's arc SHOULD have been her reckoning with her own participation in this environment and system, tearing off the rose tinted glasses completely and then choosing to better herself and the environment around her along with finally seeing the person Hoshino Ai was in her entirety.

The toxicity and parasocialism of idol culture is in a direct clash with Ruby's naivete and enjoyment of idols as a method for her escapism. She is a "fan" but she is also an "idol" and she needs to be able to reconcile and grow past those two identities, as a fan who buys into the idol propaganda, projecting her own desires and fears onto them and as an idol who has to participate in this system of being a product for the masses.

Ruby and Ai are the main focus for discussing the toxicity and corruption in the idol industry because the two of them are major idols here. Ruby is paralleling Ai of B-Komachi's steady upward rise in the industry- we've known since the beginning her end goal would have been a concert at the Dome, the story is partly about her journey getting there.

And because Ruby is the main viewpoint through which we see the idol industry, that's why Ruby has to have meaningful interaction with the darker side of things because if she doesn't, then the whole commentary falls flat. Its been discussed before but because of her following in Ai's footsteps so to speak, that the differences between her and Ai in how they become idols, the way Ruby is a nepobaby who has everything from her group members to her first gig handed to her and Ai who received none of the protections Ruby did provides an implicitly victim blaming narrative on Ai as the story transforms more and more into "Ruby is the purest and most honest of all and thus is the superior idol" when the circumstances for Ruby and Ai's careers are completely utterly different in a way that makes a comparison like this impossible without placing inadvertent blame on Ai for not being a honest pure idol like Ruby.

Ruby has to discuss and interrogate the toxic and negative side of the industry as she experiences it! It can't brushed off with her because SHE is the one following in Ais footsteps as an idol and whose journey revolves around her dream of being one. Making Ruby brush off all of that and refusing to let her meaningfully interact with critique on the industry in order to perpetuate the narrative that she's the "best and purest and most specialest idol who will definitely surpass Ai because she just can okay?" accidentally invalidates OnK's critique on idol culture with Ai. Then the topic of discussion is not "how the misogyny and toxicity perpetuated by the idol industry and rampant entitlement over idols causes deaths and suffering for idols because humans are not meant to be pedestalled as a pure ideal" but instead becomes "Ai wasn't a good enough liar or idol and wasnt pure enough thats why she was attacked but Ruby is pure and good and perfect and she won't follow in Ais footsteps because shes just naturally that good." which is uh. Bad!

And because the story takes a swift turn into making Ruby the central focus of everything, that means her dream to be an idol also becomes the centre focus which means any sort of critique of that position becomes stagnant because the story is unable to reconcile that dirty reality with the rosy future it wants Ruby to achieve. Ruby won't have to deal with misogyny and toxicity because she's perfect and pure. Ruby's negative feelings towards fans that she explicitly says she sometimes sees as Ryousuke (c.123) are brushed away because she's a loving idol who never has any less than loving thoughts about her fans. Ruby's manipulations and horrible treatment of people during her BH mode are never resolved and the RBKN fight ends in Ruby graciously forgiving Kana for her outburst and jealousy and never allowing Kana or Mem to opportunity to properly air out their grievances with Ruby discarding them like leftover vegetable scraps in BH arc because can't you see? She's the story's specialest princess who has never done anything wrong in her life ever.

Refusing to let Ruby confront her own biases and participation in the toxic culture of the idol industry and the way she perpetuates that cycle of harm in BH arc as an idol and how she places Aqua and Ai on a pedestal that she never fully takes them off from as a fan, places a dam of any meaningful commentary and critique on the toxic reality of the industry that the story began with, thus stagnating both Ruby as a character and diminishes the lessons the story taught to begin with, as all those criticisms become retroactively invalidated in the eyes of the narrative.

(Slightly) late to the party, but I wrote* a fic about/for Armin’s birthday: it’s called Cardigan Story and is set during the Paradis’ Peace Treaties: when the Alliance finally visits Mikasa in her home, she has something to give Armin, something she wanted to give him for his birthday for the past one, two, three years.

It covers the core people in Armin’s life and his relationship with them, with a special focus on Armin & Mikasa (and it’s also, of course, an AruAni story.)

Anyway, I wrote a KanaKane fic, A light sting, that is, as of chapter 164, canon divergent (summary is: Kana, Akane, and a bunch of other people are at the hospital while they’re waiting to have news about Aqua’s conditions; Akane’s pov); despite it no longer being canon compliant, however, I still feel like clinging to it, at least on an emotional level. I also really like the ship; in Umineko terms, I feel like Kana and Akane are like Lambda and Bern, but in this fragment it’s Bern who’s pursuing.

I don’t know if the canon story will touch on these feelings (not the shipping ones: mostly, the grief), but given that, despite all the effort Aka Akasaka put into it, I still feel attached to the story, I truly hope I will have the desire to write more about them, and maybe make a sense of it all — Akane’s pov was unexpectedly fun to write, and I too want to escape this story unscathed.

Speculating about the ending of Oshi no Ko

Considering that Aka Akasaka has already proven he’s one of those authors who will (force) pull elements from a more significant story to ballast their own cheap writing, the narrative version of appeal to authority, I’m now fully convinced that chapter 165 will be a retelling of the myth of Amaterasu in the Heavenly Rock Cave.

So chapter 165 will show that Ruby has disappeared, and the world is in shambles because it cannot bathe in her light. In fact, she took hide in Miyazaki, in the cavern where she and Akane found the corpse of her sensei. Here she will or will not have her version of the dream world conversation with Tsukuyomi, where Ruby is desperate and wants to be granted a wish, while the latter will try to convince her of something like “the power is within yourself already” while being very vague and all.

Ruby is full of grief and doesn’t want to come out ever again, until Akane (and/or Kana, absolutely without setup but what’s that), as Ame-No-Uzume, will convince (trick) her into coming out, and then, everything will be alright and the sun will be restored over the world.

Chapter 166 will have a time skip of a few years. It will show video interviews of Kana and Akane and Ruby and the others, showing that they all had great success with their careers and their lives; they may recount past suffering but only briefly: there’s melancholy, but they’re doing well.

It is then shown that these interviews are being watched by a little girl, very attentively but also with a hint of that same melancholy. Something something this story is fiction, the entire world is fiction; the melancholy disappears. An adult then approaches the girl and says something like:

“You really like actors, {LittleGirlsName}, don’t you? Do you want to become one?”

And the girl (of course, Aqua reincarnated), will respond:

“I don’t know, I think I really want to take it easy this time.”

I’m going through some old files in 4thewords to make space, and ugh, it is painful to skim through these not-even-one-year-old Oshi No Ko fanfic drafts…

#I get that it happens for most stories when they are ending #but ugh #in this case it’s like we’ve been in a state of incredulity for half a year #and then in these past few months grief hit #and it’ll keep on going for another three weeks as an open wound #and who knows for how long after that #for the story that could’ve been and wasn’t #for the characters that will never reach their potential #for the relationships abruptly cut off #we are getting a proper ending but what about the buildup to this ending?#should I still have hope?#or is it just going to hurt more #oshi no ko #oshi no ko fanfic writing #anyway kanakane for the win please escape this story unscathed

The exchange is multifandom, and open to artists, writers, and podficcers. Fandoms do not have to have a canonized Ao3 tag to participate.

You must be a member of the Discord, for communication purposes.

Once assigned, participants will have 48 hours to deliver their gift.

Artists are expected to deliver a decent sketch, Writers and Podficcers have a 300 word minimum

This exchange will be operating on DL:DR when it comes to what the mods will police and what we ask you to respect in terms of other people’s requests. The single exception is RPF, which has additional rules.

RPF is allowed. Persons nominated for RPF must be famous in their own right and over the age of 18. Persons famous chiefly for their participation in facist regimes or as serial killers will not be considered for nomination. Mods reserve the right to reject RPF nominations in poor taste.

Original Work is allowed. Use the "Original Work" fandom. If it is important to you that a person within a specific pairing is a specific gender, make that clear within the tag, for example "Middle-aged King (M)/His Loyal Bodyguard (NB) (Original Work)".

As this is a 13+ exchange, there is no NSFW allowed, even if you’re sure that both you and your recipient are adults. This applies both to sexual content and to extreme (e-rated) gore.

To increase matching options, tags must be seconded (nominated twice) to make it into the tag set. Because of this, tag nominations will be collected through a google form.

You can nominate tags for up to ten fandoms, with up to twenty tags nominated in each.

You will have one week to submit relationships and characters to a tag set, one week to write your prompts, and 48 hours to deliver your gift.

Participants are required to request at least three fandoms (with associated prompts), and offer to create around at least three fandoms.

To help your creator out, you must offer either a list of likes or prompts that contains at least one element that works for each art form that you have opted into. If you opt into art, you must give at least one art prompt or art like in your signup, and the same for fic or podfic.

To increase matching options, at least one of your prompts has to be either Gen (platonic relationship) or a single-character prompt.

Please include anything you absolutely don't want to receive (Do Not Wants) in the Optional Details field in your AO3 signup. Only DNWs in the Ao3 signup will be enforced, and mods will not enforce DNWs that are overly restrictive, unclear, or used to box a recipient into a specific gift (i.e. "nothing gross", or "I don't want anything that isn't a space au with the mc's other major love interest dead off screen".)
