and obviously you find yourself thinking oh i do wish i could get severed to do this one thing. would you actually maybe not. but you do wish you didn't have to undergo medical procedures you do wish you didn't have to do the things that give you anxiety you do wish you didn't have to do tedious tasks that barely even require you to be present for them. it's tempting. that's why the premise works. but the premise is also that somebody has to do it. somebody has to go to the dentist and somebody has to get on that plane and somebody has to write those thank you notes. just like somebody has to clean the house and somebody has to harvest the food you eat and somebody has to make the clothes you wear. you can't eliminate inconvenience you can only delegate it. you can't eliminate suffering you can only delegate it. and always the easiest way to live with this is to see that somebody as less than. less than you less than people. and if that somebody has to wear your body to do it well maybe it's not all that different. they're not a person. you are. it's capitalism all the way down baby
The concept of Kier's """twin""" is so interesting when paralleled with Severance. Kier jerked off in the forest and was ashamed of it, so he made up a fake brother to blame the act on. Someone else to take the blame and get punished. It was him who jerked off, not me. He was the sinner, not me. So Dieter got punished, not Kier. The Innies really are just the Outies' punching bags to take the punishments, and bear the consequences of whatever their Outies do. Mark drinking all day and leaving Mark S to deal with the hangovers. Gabriella wanting kids, but leaving Gabby to bear the pregnancy and childbirth. Severed workers not wanting to work, so their Innies have to do it.

It seems silly but this is why itâs so important to give yourself downtime where you can just let your brain idle!! You gotta let yourself become the cardboard box, trying to make ideas is just herding cats so let them come to you instead
This is especially useful for ADHD people â chasing something relentlessly will just burn you out. Youâll find it if you divert attention, annoyingly â use the weird psychological quirks to your advantage!
A study in controlled intensity, and a masterclass in writing, acting and directing. How refreshing to see such an intelligent film in this year of dumbed down releases - it had me hypnotized and it reminded me what great films can feel like in the theater.Â
Cate Blanchett somehow finds herself here in what might be her best ever role; she is commanding beyond the norm, and there are scenes and monologues here that will probably win her an Oscar. And Hildur Gudnadottir is one of the most interesting composers out there right now, the music and mood scrapes at the chalkboard and keeps creeping.Â
Iâm going to try and articulate a personal issue with how people approach the film TĂĄr, which ties into a lot of abuse / ableism that people with NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) have to manage all the time from other people.Â
TĂĄr has a lot of narcissistic traits, which is why it almost halfway IS a relief that tumblr just seems to hate this film, bc I wouldnât want to read the posts people would make if they could make this connection more. People wanna say âx repâ is bad otherwise, try having the disorder people just outright say should get you shot on sight for being a monster and THEN try speaking up about âthis character is relatable, actuallyâ and seeing how well that goes. I can relate and enjoy characters without saying Iâm promoting the choices they make, but youâre pretty much never allowed to do that, especially if the thing(s) you relate on are narcissistic things - and thatâs kind of my point here.Â
If characters with narcissistic traits arenât outright condemned, then theyâre just ignored. âWho cares about this character? Why isnât this character being punished more? Why are we showing softer sides of this character who is clearly a monster? How is feeling sad or guilty a real emotion this character could have?âÂ
Jesus Christ, itâs almost like people with narcissistic traits are still human beings?!
Thereâs a myriad of reasons that people are snubbing TĂĄr. Itâs not solely this one, but theyâre all equally as frustrating and stupid. This one just, at times, bothers me the most, bc itâs people repeating the rhetoric of those who promote the idea of ânarcissistic abuse,â basically. âYou donât have to care about some people, just drop them off a cliff and go have brunch <3âÂ
People talk about âirredeemable characters,â a lot of whom have traits of things that exist IRL through usually either autism or personality disorders / trauma (since PDs merge into being trauma based in some cases), and then say shit like âwhy should I care about this person?â with zero self awareness of how they sound themselves.
Some people donât like this film bc TĂĄr being a woman and a lesbian feels like âbad rep.â And Iâm not here to argue on that bc Iâm neither one of those things, so I have no say in whatâs offensive or not there. My point just is - you DO have the possibility of getting âgoodâ rep. Narcissistic traits kind ofâŠdonât. I donât necessarily need that, either. Iâm not sure âgoodâ NPD rep would ever work much in fiction bc people just donât understand the disorder enough to âseeâ it unless itâs through negative behavior. I donât mind that the narcissistic characters are usually not liked or well-behaved - I just wish people would at least examine them vs outright discarding them and saying anyone who doesnât discard / condemn them is also evil incarnate.Â
I examine media for the same reason anyone else does - to feel seen, to make connections, to experience a story, etc. Nobody is ever going to relate to the same things, and thatâs what can make art beautiful - thereâs so many variations, thereâs going to be something for all of us. I would never dream of dictating what someone else enjoys. Tbh, with empathy issues I have, that would be even crueler for me to do. I donât understand half of what the hell people are ever talking about for the reasons THEY connect with the media they doâŠbut I donât give them shit for it. Thatâs what irks me. People, who Iâm going to assume think theyâre so ânormalâ and âhealthy,â have no issue stomping onto MY shit and saying âdonât like this, donât sympathise with this, whatâs WRONG with you?!â and also telling everyone else the same thing and basically attempting to shut the whole thing down. But IâM supposed to be the monster? This happens to me a lot via autism as well. Iâm in my lane, what the fuck are YOU doing here?!
Itâs SO frustrating.Â
TĂĄr is one of the best examples of narcissistic traits in a character Iâve ever seen, and a lot of the issue people have with her is because itâs so subtle and they also donât feel thereâs punishment enough for it. Sheâs basically not being the narcissistic caricature who then is tortured severely for her âcrimesâ the way people are used to thinking happens. Itâs revealing a lot of peopleâs ableist thinking bc theyâre seeking to make her a one dimensional piece of shit and theyâre missing a lot of the details that fit the film together as a whole bc of it. You very clearly see her being haunted by things and having intense anxiety and OCD-esque behaviors nonstop, yet people are like, ânothing ever happens in this filmâ or âare we supposed to feel bad for her?!â Youâre supposed to just see her as a FULL PERSON. What a concept! No, you donât have to feel bad for her or even understand her, but just donât see her journey as âunrealisticâ because you basically think narcissists donât have feelings and canât exist in the world in the way she does.Â
The way this character is written / acted is brilliant across levels for how well she moves through the world as she does. I was blown away by how incredibly good she is at being manipulative within her very specific environment as a very specific person (a queer white woman with a family). I hate that people are missing this bc they donât see the value in âproblematicâ characters (which is rich as fuck, given the themes presented in the film) or understand the âpointâ of wanting to tell a story unless it apparently pushes some agenda. Sometimes a story is just a story and itâs not trying to do anything but set a mood, give you a glimpse of another life, take you out of yourself. I donât know why it seems like people want to fight that idea so much now. Just enjoy it for what it is.
