How they’d made it through the last council session, Sorcha couldn’t have rightly said. Their fever had gotten worse and worse, no matter how many ice baths they’d taken. The shakes, too, were worsening, they weren’t able to keep food down, and their mood was all over the place. More than one frightened human servant had fled when an irritable Sorcha had uncharacteristically lost their temper, causing erratic gusts to flurry around the room. With every passing day, they felt as though they were losing themself to an unknown disease that would slowly turn them into either a husk or a monster, before finally killing them.

The former seemed more likely, as they wandered the halls of the palace and the streets of Acrine in a daze. On this occasion, Sorcha had even forgotten shoes as they wandered through the city. The fog on their mind lifted a touch, and they looked about in confusion. Where… where were they this time? They didn’t recognize this part of the city. Someone passed by close to them, and they called out, “Hey… hey, can you… can you point me to the, um, the market? I think… mmm, might be lost.” As they spoke, they stumbled a bit and had to prop themself up on the nearest wall.

Arabella had been careful with her excursion this time around, having feigned illness to escape her daily classes before making her way into Acrine. Her first few attempts at blending in with commoners had gone...poorly, to say the least, but she was getting better at it. In addition to what seemed like a better variation of landwalker clothing, she had adopted a hooded cloak that hid her doll-like face from passersby. With this new disguise, almost no one bothered her, and she was free to look about the city for anyone or anything out of the ordinary.

One such person, or perhaps faerie given their wings, appeared before her hardly an hour into her trip. They seemed to walk in a daze, shambling forwards in a confused state as though they could not recognize their surroundings. As they called out to her, firey red hair matted across a sweat-covered face, Arabella stopped dead in her tracks. Alarm crossed her face as they stumbled, hands shooting out to steady them out of instinct. “The...market? I’m sorry, I’m not from here. B-but I did see a number of stalls not too far away. I can take you there.“ How else would the faerie make it in their condition? It was appalling. “Are you looking for...a healer, perhaps? An apothecary?”

It was not every day that Queen Liling would send her daughter to the surface. In fact, Arabella could count the number of times she had made formal visits above-water on one hand. Her mother much preferred to keep her close, to ensure that her daughter was being properly groomed for her role as princess of the Mer Kingdom. But for reasons unknown to the princess, she had been sent up with a retinue of the queen’s finest soldiers, ushered into a carriage and sent off to meet with the King of the Vampire Court himself, Gabriel Beaumont. There were only so many reasons why the queen felt that her hand was forced in such a way, and somehow Arabella wasn’t entirely convinced that the pirates were the sole reason for it. No, this was part of a larger scheme, and she was to serve as a means to deliver it.

At least this was a role she was familiar with.

The princess was escorted up the polished marble stairs into an alien estate, which reminded her of the decadent European manors depicted by her tutors in past history lessons. Robes of deep crimson, embroidered with the images of sea serpents in golden thread, barely grazed along the floor. She held her head high, careful not to jostle the many pins that held her raven hair back in an intricate knot. If her mother wished for her to impress this man, she would do so. Failure wasn’t an option for the daughter of Queen Liling. It never was.

As she laid her eyes on the King of Vampires, who looked like a living version of a Renaissance painting, the princess allowed herself to fall back into her expected persona. There would be no uncertainties, no hestitations in front of this man. Arabella stepped forward to the dais, bowing deeply. ”Thank you for the kind invitation, Your Majesty. The Queen sends her regards, and her apologies for not being able to speak with you in person.” She spoke firmly, her soft voice echoing in the vast space of the estate. The mermaid straightened herself, offering a vacant smile. “She has sent me to represent the interests of the Mer Kingdom in her stead, and hopes that you find this arrangement to be acceptable.”

It was the light that had caught Arabella’s eye initially.

She had wandered for so long in the Wilde Wood, having been following someone who she had suspected was working for her mother. But the person in question had disappeared shortly after she had left the trail, leaving her alone in an environment she was wholly unfamiliar with. Yet the misfortune had also led her to this cave, where something was shining deep within. Curiosity got the better of her and Arabella chose to make her way towards it.

The princess approached cautiously, testing the uneven ground with each tentative step and darting behind any large rock that would obscure her presence from whoever or whatever dwelled in there. Arabella had repeated this approach several times, sticking out her head to look for signs of movement before scampering over to her next hiding place, quiet as a field mouse. The mermaid kept her eyes focused on the light, but as she moved closer, sneaking from rock to rock, a silhouette started to block her view. A human silhouette.

Alarmed, she shrank back behind her hiding place, a hand over her mouth to muffle her squeak of surprise. Arabella let a few heatbeats pass, before inching her way to the edge of the stone, squinting in the dark to try and make out some of the finer details. ‘...wait.’ This was someone she recognized; someone she had clearly spoken to in passing, and not so terribly long ago. Back in the tavern, when the stranger had so kindly offered her cover in the dangerous locale. Yet despite the good deed, she hadn’t the chance to ever learn who her saviour was.

How strange it seemed, to have met her twice in such a small span of time. It had to have been fate.

“Miss.” She whispered, trying to draw her attention without necessarily alerting any of the other potential occupants in the cave. “U-um, Miss, over here!” Arabella waved a hand, her long sleeve fluttering in the movement. “I don’t know...if it’s safe to go right in there. I-I mean, what if there are traps? Something worse?”

In the wake of the disastrous Beaumont-Wren wedding Henry had been busier than ever, he and Lilianna were doing everything they could to look into the murders that had taken place as well as investigate the potential role that the Mer Queen had played in them. Liling was mum as usual but the two of them knew better, she controlled more than just the sea and as long as her nefarious actions were ignored the more she was able to get away with. With that being said he had been spending more time on land than usual and it was only just earlier in the day that he had made it back home to his chambers beneath the sea. The glorious, sprawling castle felt more like a prison than anything else but he knew that it was nothing compared to how Arabella must have felt. The poor girl—her mother watched her every move and it was rare to see the young princess without a set of bodyguards following after her at all times. As soon as he finished cleaning himself up he would find her and see if she would perhaps join him for tea, it would be a lie to say that he didn’t miss Arabella. Her kindness, her warmth, her soothing presence … yes. It had been far too long since he had seen his betrothed indeed.

He had just finished fixing his appearance, his hair once again neatly coifed with his favorite kelp gel and his fingernails scrubbed clean of the blood that had come from the bodies he and Lilianna had stumbled upon while following Liling’s most recent movements, when suddenly a knock on his glass door made him realize that Arabella had come to him. Except—it wasn’t her usual sweet, soft-spoken voice that he had grown so accustomed to. She sounded anxious. Scared. She sounded like she was in pain. “Arabella!” he breathed her name urgently as he swam towards the door and pulled it open with great haste, he looked down at her small frame in concern and the moment he realized that she was bleeding his panic only worsened. “Princess—Your Highness—what on earth—” With a sharp glance over either of his broad shoulders to ensure that no one had spotted them, he gently pulled her out of the hall and into his chambers, there was a large gash on her side, crimson bleeding out onto pale ivory, and Henry could feel his heart hammering loudly in his chest. Arabella wasn’t supposed to be hurt. Not ever was Arabella supposed to come into harm’s way for any reason at all.

“Come inside. Sit. Let me take a look at you.” His words held no word for argument as he brought her into his en suite bathroom in a panicked rush, seating her down at the edge of the tub and immediately beginning to pull out any and all medical supplies that he could locate. He wasn’t Lilianna—he wasn’t a healer—but he would take care of her. He had to. “Arabella, angelfish—who did this to you? What happened?” he asked in sheer disbelief in shock, it made no sense to him that she was injured. What kind of situation could she possibly find her in that would leave her bleeding half to death like this? “Was it pirates? Did someone attack you?” Rage overwhelmed him at the thought, once he had amassed as many first aid supplies as he could find he swam in front of her again, tucking his long, green tail beneath him so that he could kneel as best as he could where she perched. “Let me see, Princess, please. Let me see the wound.” His voice was gentler now, he was always gentle with her and he would treat her like the china doll she was to him. “Just focus on me, alright? Not the pain, not anything else. Let me take care of you.”

Oh, thank the sea gods, he was there. Arabella was so relieved that she could have collapsed on the spot. It took her a moment to speak, overwhelmed as she was with the terrible events from her excursion. Henry’s worried expression, a side of him she had never quite seen before, caused her to break a little. “I’m...I’m sorry. I-I wouldn’t have bothered you if I had the choice.” The sting of tears welled up in her wide eyes and she looked down, feelings of shame welling up in her. Everything had gone so terribly wrong, and the fact that Henry had to see her like this, weak and injured, only made the sting of her failures that much worse.

Her mother would have never tolerated such sniveling.

The princess let him lead her towards the bathroom, the effort of swimming doubling as the adrenaline wore off and she could feel the extent of the cut on her side. Reluctantly, she sat down, watching as Henry flustered about. But his question was more than fair, given the circumstances. “...It was my fault. I thought I could h-handle it.“ Arabella started quietly, shrinking back more out of instinct than necessity. “I wasn’t up there for long. I wanted to know if...” She had gone to investigate her mother, but somehow she couldn’t give voice to the thought, too treasonous even for her. “B-but some men...they followed me. Cornered me at the docks and-” A faint whimper escaped, the terror coming back in a furious wave. Arabella shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself. She could still envision the way they looked at her, and how they had called her out by name. The mermaid had delighted in running on legs before, but never had she envisioned needing to run for her life. “I m-managed to escape, s-slipped back into the water. Came here.”

Henry’s request, to see the injury properly, make her blush despite understanding how necessary it was. When he spoke to her like that, so kindly and warm, it made her heart flutter in confusing ways. Nodding slowly, her fingers clumsily undid the knot of her robe, slipping off the bloodied garment to expose the jagged cut. She kept what remained of the robe, firmly at her chest, trying to maintain as much of her modesty as she could. It was...humiliating, to be exposed to Henry like this, to have this as his first memory of what she looked like beneath all the royal garb. There were so many conflicting emotions that she was having a hard time trying to process it all. “It’s...funny, isn’t it? I was l-lucky to have escaped this time. Not many do, and yet...” Deep down, she knew the truth of it, even if the very idea made her tremble. Arabella looked away, not wanting to see Henry’s expression. “I-I still need to go back. To the surface.”

Nadya’s hazel eyes scanned the woman sitting in front of her. This timid and anxious thing stuck out worse than a sore thumb among the patrons that flocked to The Devilish Spade. Glancing around behind her, the brunette could already spot several pairs of eyes glancing in their direction. A sharp look cautioned those among her own crew and even some among the other ships. Nadya Kingsley had built a reputation among the pirate population of Candoris and few dared to anger the rugged quartermaster of The Renegade.

“Knock yourself out,” the brunette finally answered with a shrug before tipping her drink back. Nadya savored the burn of the liquor sliding down her throat before setting her empty glass on the table top. Leaning back in her chair as she peered at the woman huddled in the seat across from her she asked, “Who are you running from?”

Arabella could feel the stares lessen as she stood near the stranger, as though the woman in front of her had sway over many of the patrons in the tavern. She didn’t lower her guard, but her shoulders did slump with relief. Her eyes fell to the table, mind moving quickly as she pulled together a story that would make sense. It was a skill she had learned in her mother’s court, but she had never used it under such...dynamic circumstances before. “Thank you. I...know I must stand out a bit, but I figured that they wouldn’t follow me here.“

She glanced back to the other patrons, carefully considering each of their faces before she finally looked up to the older woman. Someone who could quiet a room like that was either someone to respect or someone to fear, or perhaps a combination of both. “I-It’s my mother. She’s a...dreadful person.” Her fingers twisted in her lap, using just enough of the truth to seem as genuine as possible. “I just wanted to leave, but she sent someone after me. I-I can’t go back there.” Not yet. Not until she got a sliver of truth about her operations. “...So I ran. But...I haven’t really thought about what to do now, to be honest. I don’t know this area at all.”

Arabella’s heart was thundering as she sped away from the surface, pinkish clouds following her dive off of the dock and into the water. Harpoons followed after her, sharp metal scaping by her in an attempt to drag her back to land. But the princess was faster. As soon as her legs reformed into a shimmering fin, she wove between the weapons, retreating with every ounce of strength that she had in her small body.

This time, she had escaped. But the way those men on the surface looked at her, as soon as they had cornered her on the pier...A shiver ran down her spine, fear and frustration rising within her. It had been close. Too close.

She didn’t stop swimming until she had reached familiar grounds, namely those of the Young estate. By that point, her side was ablaze with pain. Just the slightest glimpse confirmed her fears, her commoner clothing having been torn to shreds when a knife had cut into her side. Arabella looked around, darting into a shelter of the reef so as to avoid being seen. A quiet whimper left her as she rearranged her simple robe, using the sash to obscure the injury as best as she could. If any one of the servants saw the state she was in, if they knew she had left the castle without informing the Queen, a gash would be nothing compared to her wrath.

Arabella needed help, and there was only one person she could turn to at this time of night.

Keeping one hand pressed firmly against her wounded side, she reluctantly made her way towards the estate. Arabella quietly swam up to the outside of the windows, counting until she came across the right one. It was a room she had visited many times before, in happier times, but never quite like this. She tapped against the smooth glass, looking over her shoulder for any signs of any stray servants. None of them could be trusted, but Henry Young...Henry was safe. Henry was her friend. Surely he would help.

Arabella knocked on the glass again, feeling her eyes sting as she tried to keep herself together. “Henry please, wake up.”

Nadya stepped into the dimly lit interior of The Devilish Spade, a tavern not far from the docks where the The Renegade was anchored. With the ship safely docked in pirate waters and under the protection of the vampire court, the dark haired quartermaster felt better about leaving the ship to grab a drink and relax for the night.

Making her way to the back of the bar, Nadya claimed a both against the wall where she could keep an eye on the entrance of the tavern. Flagging down a barmaid, the dark haired woman ordered something hard and watched the barmaid’s figure disappear into growing crowd of patrons. Turning her attention back to the front, Nadya’s hazel eyes landed on a figure making their way through the crowd towards her table. The quartermaster of The Renegade raised an arched brow as the figure slid into the seat across from her.

“Can I help you?” Nadya asked, regarding the figure unenthusiasticly.

She wasn’t supposed to be here, this close to the Bay of Wolves. Pirates prowled the docks and haunted the taverns, funding their ale and their parties with money gained from the blood of her people. If for any reason her cover was blown, it would mean more than a slap on the wrist in these parts - it could very well cost her life. But the rumours that had been circulating around the castle, of drugs and of odd behaviours appearing on land. Arabella couldn’t just let any of it slide. She had to investigate the sources, if only to confirm that her mother’s influence was spreading.

Still, she wasn’t doing a very good job of blending in. Arabella felt herself panicking as eyes fell upon her, so she retreated to a further corner of the bar, towards a woman sitting along. As the dark-haired stranger spoke to her, she flinched and looked down at her feet. Not even five minutes into her secret mission and someone had called her out. “I...um...“ Timidity brought her far within the Mer Court, but in a tavern full of the rowdiest characters in Candories, it would only serve to draw the kind of attention she didn’t want to have. “I’m sorry. I was trying to lose someone. It-it wouldn’t be any trouble if I just, waited here a moment, would it? Until they leave?”

• Despite being born and raised as the crown princess of the Mer Kingdom, Arabella’s childhood was far from perfect. Neither her mother or her father were shining examples of good parenting - all that they wanted was for her to be the ideal heir to the throne, and they never hid their disappointment that she wasn’t born a male instead. Even still, she was treated as little more than a racehorse growing up - albeit one with a silver spoon held in their mouth. She was taught to be quiet and obedient from a young age, and was usually the sole witness to the incredibly violent fights between the king and queen. There was no love lost in their marriage, and when she was only eight years old, her mother murdered her father; she doled out a heavy measure of gu into his evening plum wine, and in the morning, it was announced that he had fallen ill in the middle of the night, and no one but Arabella was the wiser. She had seen her mother slip the poison into her father’s drink, but she had been too afraid to say anything - after all, there wasn’t another human being, above the sea or underneath it, who was even half as cruel and calculated as her mother dearest. Her father had been an awful man, but that didn’t mean that his death sat well with the young princess at all - at only eight years old, she became privy of her mother’s evil nature, and she was forced to live with the knowledge of it ever since then.

• Arabella has never wanted to be the crown princess. Her youth has been spent with rigorous training and lessons on how to be perfect in every single way, and sometimes the pressure feels as if it’s eating her alive from the inside out. It doesn’t help that her mother has completely corrupted the Mer Kingdom - ever the master potions maker, the queen was able to concoct a highly-addictive drug known as xīng chén, and she uses it to keep a private army of black ops soldiers at her beck and call. They’re the ones who do her dirty work - all the murders and executions that are almost immediately blamed on the pirates instead. Arabella is all too aware of the treachery her mother enacts on a daily basis, but she feels helpless to stop it, especially given the fact that she’s meant to be queen one day. The thought terrifies her - she’s never wanted the throne. She wants to be like other girls her age - young and carefree and with their entire life ahead of them for them to live freely. Her relationship with her mother is tenuous at best - she can’t help but want to please the queen, even after everything she’s done, and so she excels in every lesson she takes; she sings and she dances and she puts on a smile that only she knows is fake.

• Her mother has been planning her betrothal ever since she was a small girl. When Henry Young, a boy a few years older than she was, showed up on the castle’s doorstep with blood all over his body and aching loss running rampant on his face, the entire kingdom was stunned. It turned out that Henry was the only survivor of a noble family that had been massacred - by pirates, supposedly, but Arabella has always wondered if her mother played more of a role in their death than she would ever admit to. And why? Because now, Henry was the sole heir to a massive fortune, and while he wouldn’t receive it until he became of age, Liling didn’t mind waiting, and told Henry that she would allow him to live and work within the kingdom if he agreed to one day marry her daughter. Now, years later, with Henry’s fortune securely in place, their bethrothal has been finalized, and as kind and friendly as Henry has proven to be, Arabella still feels helplessly trapped.

• War is coming up on the horizon, and her mother is growing more and more devious with each day that passes. Arabella’s wedding is being planned and it’s supposed to be the wedding of the century, but she can’t help but feel as if she’s a wallflower, uselessly watching as her life is spelled out without any of her consent. She wonders, then, if it’s time to stand up to her mother - if it’s time to make a change in the Mer Kingdom before it’s overthrown by the murky darkness that’s been present long before her birth.

He makes her nervous, if she’s being honest, despite how kind and friendly he’s always been, and she’s yet to do anything to further their semi-friendship into something decidedly more…romantic.

She knows of the older girl as being beautiful, graceful, and incredibly mysterious - she’s the youngest mer representative in the court of delegates, and yet she hardly spends any time under the sea at all. They’ve interacted a few times in the past, and Arabella is curious about her, to say the least.
