Isaura was unusually familiar with portals. Your average sorceress maybe only passed through one, unless they were a part of some institution.
But realm portals were exceedingly rare to cross.
Realm portals required peeling back layers between the worlds or tearing through them. Some just required putting in a certain amount of energy, and others required more drastic measures, like death.
Tears were tricky things. They inherently wanted to mend themselves. In order to keep one open for longer, one needed to ‘seal the edges’ so to speak.
Making within realm portals was easier. Essentially they just required links, and then you pulled and bound them together.
Windows were the easiest form of portal to make. All you were doing was stripping a few layers back. And reflective surfaces were the best material for them.
Isaura tied off the last loop of glowing thread. She set the mirror down and stretched, bending over the back of her chair.
She was finally finished with the set of three. The first was linked to the other two, allowing them to see and hear into whatever room the first was placed in.
She looked over to the shelves of raw materials. She would have to stock up soon. It had been a very long time since her last one.
To be fair, she had taken a break from enchanting work for awhile, only now accepting one or two commissions.
Gathering up the mirrors she started towards the stairs, leaving her apron on the hook.
She was glad to find out that she wasn’t as rusty as she thought. Her work had turned out quite well, although there was still the real test waiting.
So she marched up two floors and to the middle of the hallway.
A muffled voice made her pause at the door. It rose and fell, even shifting into imitations of others. Smiling, she opened the door.
Julian was regaling the baby- their baby- with an epic story of one adventure or another. Morrigan, absolutely enraptured by her father and his failing hand, listened along.
He had barely put her down since she was born. He took her everywhere he could get away with. Around the house, the garden, the market, even the palace sometimes. Anywhere.
Morrigan babbled, interrupting.
“That’s a very good point sweetheart. I suppose I wasn’t thinking straight at the time. But your mother and aunt sure let me know that it hadn’t been a good idea.”
Isaura leaned on the doorframe, watching the back and forth.
Eventually Morrigan looked over, yelping and making grabbing motions towards her. Julian followed his little girl’s gaze, grinning when he got there.
Setting the mirrors down, she stepped into his open arm. She let herself be drawn into a hug. She gently took her baby as he pressed a kiss to the side of her head.
“Hello to you too,” she relaxed in his grip, “They’re done now by the way.”
He easily spotted the mirrors by the door. They had originally been his idea. A way to keep an eye on the baby while they were away.
Julian was a worrywort, but she didn’t think he wasn’t at all unreasonable in this case. He’d been so nervous about going back to work. She at least could stay at home and do her job but he was taken all across the city. With the mirror he could check up on her whenever his anxiety got a little out of hand.
It did help her own worries as well.
She watched him finish setting it in place.
The room wasn’t massive, but a good size, enough that as she got older, Morrigan would have more space to play. And it was small enough the mirror could get most of it in view.
She figured they’d use the mirrors for at least a year. Hopefully by then they’d be comfortable with less of an eye on her.
But for now they were more worried about the more immediate future.
