screammm ive never signed up for art fights because i've never had characters i want other people to draw but apparently they have put in their tos that you are not allowed to submit art attacks that trace 3d models or photographs that you, the artist, have taken yourself.

to be clear, direct traces of 3d models and photographs you have taken personally or are using within the bounds of their licensing are extremely common and completely acceptable, even in professional pipelines to produce commercial works.

having this kind of extremely strict - and extremely unenforceable - rule in a hobbyist event that includes a lot of kids and people otherwise just starting out is completely ridiculous. there's no need for it. tracing is cool and awesome and you should do it if it helps you as long as you're being up front about how you're sourcing your images

places like wikimedia commons, the public domain image archive, unsplash, and pexels have between them millions of images that are free to use for both personal and commercial projects. there's absolutely no good reason to not take advantage of these resources, and even less for not using your own photographs if you're so inclined. work smarter !

zora armour redesign - specifically for Bazz, the Guard Captain

notes + design choices under the cut!

two sets of notes bc i had too many thoughts to fit together, one is on armour choices and one on bazz design choices. three things i didn't note:

-only the captain has such fancy armour, unclassed guards have the standard armour that's seen in game, guards with specific important roles have more detailed armour that varies depending on their duties. as a representative of the domain the guard captain has to look suitably fancy.

-the metal is light, but would still weigh down a hylian quite severely if they tried to swim in it. zora are far more buoyant in the water, and also tend to be quite a bit stronger than the average hylian, so the metal armour is not so much of a hindrance (though it is still ultimately designed for land primarily)

-the ornamentation on link's armour is not specific to engagement armour - what makes that armour special is the fact that the princess herself sews the scale armour and includes a scale of her own. the metal for that armour is crafted by a smith the same as any other fancy armour, and follows similar design patterns.

bazz is my favourite character in botw aside from link i am normal about him.

also this is the biggest and most detailed art piece i've ever done + it took me like a week of working on it for hours every day and i'm SO glad to get it done for early zora may!!

traced the spear bc like fuck was i freehanding that, and traced bazz's outline bc i was not about to work out zora anatomy from scratch, but everything else is freehanded (with copious use of the curve tool my beloved curve tool)

instantly enamoured with this bag so decided to make a similar one! i thought the drawstring looked a litlte like barbels, and so I modeled mine loosely on a redtail catfish!

I'd meant to make the mouth opening a little larger than it turned out, but I can still fit my whole forearm in there so I'm pleased.
