Two paintings of the same location with very different results. The top one was painted first. I find it fascinating that using differing compositions and colors, and emphasizing certain elements can result in a whole new feel. These are both oil on panel, 24”x12” #joeledwardsart #wacoartist #landscapepainting https://www.instagram.com/p/CK40uZknU0S/?igshid=1w2i7ss864evk
Drawing in the sketchbook is a good opportunity to try different compositions, and it is fun. :) #sketching #moleskinesketchbook #landscapedrawing #joelredwardsart #lakewaco https://www.instagram.com/p/CKhu2sBnVz7/?igshid=nqcyc6rnqfts

I’m very happy to report that this drawing and two others were accepted as semifinalists in the 15th Annual Arc Salon. Congratulations to all the other artists as well. About this work: Artists must draw inspiration from the environment they find themselves in and the experiences they are involved with, and while my environment is not what could be called grandiose, I find a certain thrilling excitement in the small and quiet scenes that the "Heart of Texas" affords. And this drawing depicts a place that is classic Texas. The faint yet discernible path that extends through the trees brings the wanderer past life abundant in the fields and vegetation, bordered by a barb wire fence to keep the cattle and horses from roaming. Prickly cactus and scratchy grass contrast with the soft clouds and dark foliage of Oaks and Elms, while birds sing and cicadas tell of summers heat. Life in a Texas summer must be resilient to survive, but there is a delicate charm evident when studied as a whole, and that graceful beauty is what this artwork is suggesting. 48" x 24" Pencil and Charcoal on Paper #artrenewalcenter #artrenewalcentersalon #landscapedrawing #wacoart #wacoartist #texaslandscape #centraltexasart #joelredwardsart https://www.instagram.com/p/CIReRVanXUQ/?igshid=7btrvbjz8t4i

Detail of a work in progress. 48”x28” I’m really enjoying these large scale drawings. This is a view from @bighornnationalforest where we camped a few summers ago. It is a spectacular place. #bighornnationalforest #drawingtrees #joelredwardsart https://www.instagram.com/p/CE-MdSHn6np/?igshid=1gyj5ui4otq4n

Detail of a work in progress. Charcoal and Pencil on Paper 48”x24” I have seen and read about quite a few visual arts organizations, exhibitions and shows, and from what I have observed there can be, loosely speaking, two ideas about “Art”. Some galleries and shows are only looking for creations that are “pushing the boundaries of art” or art that “disturbs present realities”. Usually these pieces require, or at least the viewer may wish for an explanation. The other direction seems to be beauty for beauty’s sake, no other explanation is needed. Usually this art falls under the category of realism, but not exclusively. I tend toward this branch in what I enjoy seeing and creating. Both ideas are valid, I suppose, but I wonder what you think and why? #realismdrawing #joelredwardsart #drawingtrees #landscapedrawing #wacoartist #charcoaldrawing https://www.instagram.com/p/CDw9y7EH4wk/?igshid=gljrg1xdotzn

“The Pantry” 9.5” x 13” Watercolor on Paper. This painting was accepted into the 35th annual Bosque Classic. I am happy to be included with many other talented artists! Congratulations to @lindafilgo @wood_burning_by_marsha @greglewallen1836 This arrangement of barrels caught my eye as we were touring the Fanthorp Inn as part of my research for the Texas State Park Centennial Project commission. The park ranger was full of interesting facts about Texas life in the 1850’s, such as the pantry walls were painted black to create an environment that was as cool and dark as possible. I’m not sure how effective that would be but it certainly makes for a striking image. #bosqueartclassic #bosqueartclassic2020 #fanthorpinnstatehistoricalsite #watercolorpainting #watercolor #pantry #barrels https://www.instagram.com/p/CC638GJn-ME/?igshid=1grj2bwxmpw01
