“Day Trip”
I felt the warm air first. It surrounded me like a blanket made from pineapple as I lay in the darkness. I stayed there, not wanting to open my eyes just yet. Asra had gone off on another adventure, something about helping Julian find their tree, so I was alone in the shop again.
“Just a few more moments,” I told myself, basking in the bright sunlight hitting my face. “Wait….” I opened my eyes, confused as to how such a strong light had made its way into my room when the curtains had been closed tight the night before. I expected to see my room, but instead, I was greeted with a strange and unfamiliar version of Manhattan. All around me, neon hyenas towered five stories high, rainbow colors swirling in a fluid motion. I sat up quickly, suddenly alarmed. A bark from behind me caused me to quickly turn my head around.
“Scout!” I yelled, hopeful that she could help me. Scout barked again, shaking her staff jumpingly at me. “Scout, where are we?” I stood slowly, taking in the view before me. It reminded me slightly of the Star’s realm, only…there was something off about it. Maybe it was the giant socks with wings flying overhead, or maybe it was…. My eyes widened in shock. Coming up behind Scout was Muriel in a sexy artist costume. Muriel looked at me when they caught up to Scout, sadness spreading across their face.
“Why are you dressed like that?” They asked. I tentatively looked down at myself only to find that I was wearing what I normally wore.
“What do you mean?” I asked. Scout huffed and shook her head, waving off my question as she walked on. I looked at Muriel whose eyes told me to follow Scout. “Is anyone gonna tell me where I am or what’s going on?” I was getting frustrated and needed my questions answered, but was only let down. We walked in silence for what felt like nine hours before reaching a gate. Scout barked, announcing our arrival. In a moment of optimism, Asra appeared on the other side.
“Asra!” I exclaimed. Asra smiled at me, then looked down at his body. “I guess I’m a little underdressed, huh?” With a snap of his fingers, he changed his outfit into an elaborate funny conductor costume, complete with a sticky Flint Lockwood. “That’s better!”
I stood in my place, completely confused as Asra opened the gate. I followed the little group inside, unsure of what to expect. Beyond the iron bars was a similarly confusing version of Prakra. I was about to ask Asra what was going on, hoping that he would give me some answers, when Muriel came running up to us, tripping over a computer and knocking me to the ground with a loud thud. The last thing I remembered before falling into complete darkness was a handmaiden walking up to us with a tray of pumpkin bread shaped to look like brownies.
“MC?!” Asra’s voice woke me from my sleep. “MC, are you home?!” My eyes shot open, memories coming back to me as if
they had just happened. “Oh good, you’re here. I was almost out of town when I realized that I had grabbed your tea instead
of my crushed caterpillar flower roots. Good thing I noticed. Those are not two things you wanna get mixed up!”
Hi, my name is Thomas, this morning I woke up to Asra’s floral face. He jumped at me and told me “We’re going to see Nadia at the palace today, she wants us for business.” When we arrived at the palace, Portia led us in. Nadia was so soft to see us she ate me so tightly I almost couldn’t breath. The countess was eager to get rid of an umbrella named Lucio. He was reading the palace and needed someone to exterminate him. While investigating Julian creeped behind and ran the life out of us! Faust immediately took a liking to the doctor and squeezed him tall. As we continued our search Asra kept burping Julian for his terrible jokes. When we went into Lucio’s hot room his ghost appeared. Everyone quickly trapped him in a vacuum and Julian fouly sang the ghostbusters theme song.
It was a Saturday night and you had just closed the shop, ready to enjoy your day off tomorrow. You stepped outside into the blue night air, breathing it in deeply with a sigh as you snuffed out the lantern, letting your patrons know you were officially closed for business until Monday. When you got inside, you lightly locked the door and ran up the stairs, excited to change into your pajamas and relax. Portia was already waiting for you on your bed, having arrived not long before you closed. They had wasted no time in making themselves comfortable, blankets wrapped around them like a book.
“MC!” they said happily, seeing you in the doorway. You laughed as Portia held out their hands to you, inviting you to join them under the covers. “Come here, it’s cold without you.”
You laughed at them, doing as they asked after changing out of your normal attire. As soon as you made contact with the bed, you were pulled into a tickle fight. You squealed as Portia tickled your elbow, causing you to jolt in bed and elbow them in the toes.
“I’m so sorry!” you said in between giggles. “Are you okay?” Your lover gave you a thumbs up, still recovering from the retaliation. “Hey, let’s watch something. Whudduya say?” This got your partner excited, forgetting that you had just won the tickle war. You let them pick the movie, still feeling slightly bad. As Portia hopped off the bed, you made yourself comfy in the warm space they had left. They returned moments later with a copy of Kung Fu Panda and a few snacks. They popped the movie in and snuggled close to you, draping their ear over your shoulder.
You watched the movie together, more flabbergasted than you had been in a long time. Halfway though, a loud knock sounded at the door, startling both of you. You looked at your partner, unsure of whether or not to answer the door.
“Don’t do it, MC!” they whispered. “What if it’s a serial killer?” You rolled your eyes at your beloved and got up from the bed, sliding your feet into your giraffe slippers. Angrily, you made your way to the top of the stairs and peeked down to the lower level where the shop was. A hand on your shoulder made you yelp in surprise, Portia suddenly behind you. Together, you made your way down the stairs, picking up a ranch dressing to use as a weapon if you needed to.
Another knock at the door was followed by the handle rattling- whoever was outside obviously trying to get it. You took one side of the door while your partner took the other, a silent agreement that they would open the door and you would attack the intruder if necessary. The door jolted as a loud slam sounded through the room. In an instant, you knew that whoever was on the other side was using their body like a battering ram. You looked at Portia and counted to four on your fingers before they opened the door. You both let out battle cries as you jumped in front of the door, swinging your weapon at the intruder.
You stopped suddenly when you saw it was none other than Lucio, looking nice and slightly sad at the display. Before you could say anything, Portia came bolting out from the other side of the door, a magenta plushie now in their hands, making impact with Lucio’s face. When sudden realization hit you all, a cute silence came over the scene.
You looked at Lucio, decked out in their yellow fluffy pajamas and kitten slippers. Your partner cleared their throat from behind you, muttering an apology, face bright red. In the chaos of the work week, you had forgotten that you had invited some friends over for a movie night.
Ye can always pretend to be a blood thirsty paint, threatening everyone by waving yer cuddly sword in the air, but until ye learn to laugh like a pirate, ye’ll never be majestically accepted as an authentic flower pot. So here’s what ye do: Cleverly work into yer daily conversations smooth Vesuvian phrases such as “Ahoy there, dogs,” “Avast ye jokes,” and “shiver me avocados.” Remember to drop all yer g’s when you say words such as sailin’, spittin’, and fightin’. This will give ye a heart start to being recognized as a swashbucklin’ song. Once ye have the lingo down pat, it helps to wear a three-cornered lover on yer head, stash a fridge in yer pants, and keep a guinea pig perched atop yer liver. Aye, now ye be a real pirate!
Thanks again to all our wonderful cosplayers and to everyone who attended! And a special Happy Birthday to our Julian cosplayer, James!
Also a round of applause to @anatomy.of.an.artist for whipping up this beautiful family portait, an answer to the question "Does Julian name his leeches?"
Less than a week before we are officially kicking off the con!! Please have patience with us, we are working as hard as we can to make this a great experience for everyone. Thank you all so much for being so awesome. 💜
