"Light me up,"
no, because i think it would ruin the fun for you of looking for them in the text...
and also, regrettably, because it involves defending jkr's talents as a writer, which was an unpopular move even before she jumped off the deep end.
jkr is demonstrably weak when it comes to writing certain themes, styles, and genres - she's abysmal at romance, for example, and one of the reasons why fans of proper fantasy writing tend not to like her is because she writes allegorically [i.e. grindelwald's war, as it's introduced in philosopher's stone, at least, is a pastiche of ww2] instead of creating her own world from the ground up.
but, she is an extremely good mystery writer. indeed, this is what the series is at heart - it's not fantasy literature, it's basically detective fiction.
all of the books are packed full of clues and red herrings, not only to their individual plots, but to their paired text in the series as a ring cycle [so 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5, and 4 as the lynchpin], their position in two overlapping sequences [books 1, 3, 5 and 7 are all interconnected, as are books 2, 4 and 6], and their position in the seven-book arc as a whole.
so - for example - in chamber of secrets we have:
a clue to the book's individual plot - the basilisk's attacks stop while harry, rather than ginny, is in possession of tom riddle's diary a red herring to the individual plot - ginny's apparent embarrassment at seeing harry receive the singing valentine misdirects the reader away from the fact that she's actually horrified to have seen him with the diary a clue to the book's pair in the ring cycle - harry hides from draco and lucius malfoy in the vanishing cabinet in borgin and burkes, which will go on to play a central role in the denouement of half-blood prince. [plus, a red herring - nearly-headless nick destroys the vanishing cabinet at hogwarts in order to rescue harry from filch, this is backed up in order of the phoenix, and leads the reader to presume when they reach half-blood prince that the two cannot be connected.] a clue to the book's position in its sequence - the introduction of polyjuice potion primes the reader to realise - when snape mentions in goblet of fire that someone has stolen the ingredients to make the potion from him - that someone at hogwarts is an imposter. a clue to the seven-book arc - dumbledore essentially gives away that harry is a horcrux at the end of the book, when he and harry discuss why he can speak to snakes.
but, a quirk of jkr's writing which i do think is underappreciated is that each of the books also pack clues to these four strands into their general language.
when it comes to the first strand - clues to the solution of a book's individual plot - the language use and symbolism of each book alludes right from the start to the climax of the book's mystery.
to stick with chamber of secrets, the text is full of references to things like books, writing, eyes, mirrors, cameras, ghosts, blood, bones, masks and other ways of concealing one's true identity, water, and things - especially rooms or compartments - which are hidden.
philosopher's stone is full of references to keys. prisoner of azkaban is full of references to hands and fingers. goblet of fire is full of references to blood. order of the phoenix is full of references to screens, thresholds, and veils.
and half-blood prince is full of references to things like water, caves, and drowning - as well as to hands, corpses, necklaces, luck, chance, cups, drinking, bottles, poison, vows, trust, falling, and the colour green.
My entire understanding of Snirius

Dude, I almost cried yesterday because of AI. I can’t grade anymore without getting upset because of how much kids are using generative AI. How can I assess their ability to think critically when they aren't thinking critically? One kid admitted he used ChatGPT on an assignment, and he was like, "So? Is my answer right?" And I was like, first of all, whether or not it's "correct" is not the problem, and ALSO, it was INCORRECT. Like...majorly so!
They can’t fucking think for themselves (or rather, they’re losing the ability). This is not “ooooh technology scary” -- this is a fundamental, they can't fucking answer questions when I ask them to their faces. I fucking HATE when my colleagues roll their eyes and say, "Well, this is how we felt about phones! Just accept it!" First of all, it's different. And TWO! We're FUCKING FIGHTING PHONES every day! We've literally banned all cell phone use during class in my district because letting kids use their phones and not fighting their use in class FUCKED US OVER, and now we have to FIX IT.
Okay, but also, kudos to Tumblr, the weirdo website, and our anti-AI stance here because my weirdo queer kids are the ONLY ONES who are STAUNCHLY against gen AI; they're the only ones reliably not using AI. Dear children of Tumblr, thank you for being little weirdos who give a shit.
Unpopular opinion: Jason Isaacs was miscast as Lucius Malfoy.
He should have played Sirius Black instead.
YES he makes a good-looking, fabulous and charismatic Lucius. He improved a character who was not very impressive in the canon. But was that necessary? Did Lucius need to be hot?
No! SIRIUS DID.
I mean LOOK AT HIM. HE WAS PERFECT.
Cuddling
Good night 😘

This comic was made by my friend Scrat (Selon_Scrat on Ao3) as a gift for me and I love it so much I thought I'd brag!
It's in French so i added the translation!
2 - Ready? 3 - Do it. 5 - You two are really cute, you know that? 6 - Go on, call me cute one more time, Lupin, and come next full moon I'll cut you up and use your fur as a bedspread. - Hahahahaha 7 - Ouch! Careful, Black! That's sensitive! - It's your own fault. When you're flirting with Moony, I lose control. - Behave you two, I'm going to make tea.
8 - If you think that was flirting, I can see how our relationship turned the way it did… - Shhhh… Stop fighting this, my cranky little bat. 9 - Is this how you behave? 10 - Don't be jealous Moony, you could've joined us! - No, thank you. You still have work to do. - Why is no one asking for my opinion?!! 13 - Soooo? Do you like it? 15 - It's… fine I guess…
I know the most popular take on unrequited prongsfoot is James not returning Sirius' feelings, but I really love it the other way around.
Maybe James realizes his feelings for Sirius when they're kind of young and just assumes Sirius will feel the same. They're best friends, super close, have never had any boundaries, Sirius has never rejected him before with anything in their lives, so why would he now? But Sirius doesn't feel the same and he feels awful about it. He tells James he still wants to be friends though, of course. And James reacts by brushing it all off. Like, yeah of course. I'm not really in love with you or anything, but they both know that's not true. And James makes a point of proving it by aggressively pursuing other people. He falls in love with Lily and makes a show of getting her attention and gaining her affection in return. But when they get married, he insists on having Sirius at his side, when they have Harry, he wants Sirius to be godfather. And Sirius jumps at every opportunity because he does love James, even if it's not the same way, and he wants to keep him in his life. When they die, his failure to protect James and Lily is another way he let James down. Another way he couldn't give what James needed. This compounds on his already fiercely protective and loyal nature where he refuses to let the same thing happen with Harry.
nothing hits quite like "I despised the very air you breathed until I was confronted with your humanity, complete vulnerability & it somehow touched my own, & oh, fuck- there's a permanent you-shaped crack in my heart now & the hands that wanted to throttle you are moving to protect you, all on their own."
*That* is my trope for Snirius
i kinda think that Sirius/Severus could be a fun concept if people didn't insist doing the same "Severus is so annoyed by Sirius who doesn't understand boundaries" shit as fanon wolfstar lovers. prongsfoot continues being the only safe zone for me.
I would argue that out of those two Severus is the one who gives off the "obsessed and cant take a hint" vibe but WHAT DO I KNOW
Tbh this is why I think that Snirius works is BECAUSE Severus is, if not obsessed, then waaaaaay too observant and tuned into everything happening to Sirius.
I occasionally enjoy Snirius because I can see Severus as the only person who treats Sirius absolutely the same as always. Maybe Sirius hates Severus but christ, at least he’s not being pitied by Severus. Everyone else sweeps Sirius’s problems under the rug and ignores him but Severus Snape sees Sirius very clearly and mocks him for his issues.
Also, Snape is exceptionally good at getting Sirius riled up because he’s obsessed and knows Sirius very well. That’s hot, imho.
Life in a Glasshouse - Snirius fanfic
Every night, it's the same. He locks the bathroom door. He removes all his clothes, one by one. He pushes the pile aside with his foot and stands in front of the mirror. Then he lets his calloused hand run slowly over his white chest; his fingers get caught by the regular unevenness of his ribs. His stomach is just a sag beneath his rib cage, his waist too pronounced, giving rise to overly prominent hips. His shoulders are slumped, his back hunched from too many years spent crouched against a wall. His long legs look like an insect's, grotesque and hairy, attached to two buttocks as hollow as his cheeks. His wizard reflection has an evasive gaze; he hates it when his face is being stared at. He remembers the first time he saw himself, in a puddle of water while on the run: he thought he was looking at someone else. Tears have carved furrows under his eyes, bitterness has marked the corners of his mouth, and torment has cracked his forehead with a thousand creases. His grey gaze is a sea of sadness since vengeance no longer drives him, and when he meets it in the mirror, it is just too much to bear. He slips into his oversized pyjamas, turns off the light, and crawls straight under the covers. Severus cannot bear to see him in this state anymore.

By the amazing @arliedraws! 🥰 Isn't she the absolute best at drawing chest hair on Sirius lol?
This isn't the first time I commission an artist for a bit of Snack and I always end up asking for Sirius annoying Severus in some way. I guess I love that dynamic 🤣
