Spoken language is still processed through the auditory sense and centers. Your brain cannot tell the difference between things you actually hear and things that you have only imagined hearing. Silent reading is imagining the sound of words being spoken. The big question, is what kind of voice do you hear reading the words? (I hear my own voice as it sounded when I was 5.)
^Which is also why if you are close to someone, you often imagine their voices as you read their text messages.
So this is pretty wrongly worded. People have always participated in silent reading, it just was not the preferred way of reading. Reading in ancient Rome was actually a social thing to do (which I think is funny considering how it is considered now days) and things were ready out loud so everyone at the party could enjoy it, since not everyone knew how to read. But it is true that reading out loud was still the more common way of reading, but it was not the only way. It should also be noted that ‘recent’ phenomenon refers to the fact that since the 1600 or 1700’s silent reading has been the norm. So, you know, recent as in the ‘modern’ period aka the past 400/500 years.

FRANKENSTEIN MUMMIES FOUND
An international team of archaeologists have discovered that two mummies found on an island off the coast of Scotland are, like Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, composed of body parts from several different humans.
For example, scientists realized a female skeleton’s jaw didn’t fit with the rest of the skull, and after some DNA testing, they found that the bones had come from different people. In the case of a male skeleton, the parts were from people who lived hundreds of years apart.
The reason for this is still unclear.

Medieval letter seal discovered in archaeological dig at Lufton
A SEAL used to decorate wax as it secured medieval letters has been discovered in the first week of an archaeological dig.
The artefact - thought to have been used between AD 1250 and 1400 - was discovered buried in a field off Thorne Lane as part of an excavation led by Dr James Gerrard, a lecturer in Roman archaeology at Newcastle University.
The inscription reads SOhOV ROBEN and the picture shows a hare riding a hound and blowing a hunting horn.
Mr Gerrard, formerly of Yeovil, said: “This is an exciting discovery and an example of medieval humour or wit. “Sohov is an Anglicised French hunting call like ‘tally-ho’ and Roben is a typical French name for a dog during the period - like Fido or Rover. Read more.

Peru seeks repatriation of 400 cultural artifacts from New York
New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art currently houses hundreds of artifacts from the Mochica culture— and Peru wants them back.
Peruvian cultural artifacts are making their way home from all over the world— Sweden’s return of the Paracas textiles being a particularly high-profile incidence of repatriation. Now, the regional government of Piura is looking to get back 400 pieces currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
El Comercio reports that the pieces in question were found in the Loma Negra cemetery, an area in which a number of Mochica elite were buried. Grave robbers sacked the tombs in the 1960s, and no extensive investigation into the site has been carried out, writes El Comercio. Read more.
I’ve seen a few fashion posts trying to expand the “Marie Antoinette is not Victorian” rant, but this stuff can get complicated, so here is a semi-comprehensive list so everyone knows exactly when all of these eras were.
Please note that this is very basic and that there are sometimes subcategories (especially in the 17th century, Jacobean, Restoration, etc)
And people wonder WHY I complain about History/Art History periodization. Note how much overlap there is to the above “eras”, and how many exceptions and extensions there are to these categories.

…this is so eerie…but cool.
^^And that’s a big part of the reason why I do this. Everyone should be able to see images like these and feel like they, too, are a part of history.
People can quibble about minutiae as much as they’d like, and I honestly don’t mind the discussion, but when it comes down to it, medievalpoc is really about making an immediate visual impact that has changed how I view history, and I hope the same can be said for people who read these posts.
Ruins of Greek theatre in Sicily
Taormina, ancient Tauromenion/Tauromenium. There are many extant ancient theatres in Sicily. This one dates to the Roman imperial period, as is clear from the brickwork, expanded cavea, and space for underground contraptions.
The coolest thing about this theatre is that you can see Mt Etna through the broken scaena, which would have been two or three stories. Truly a magnificent sight.
