Blue eyes rested on Eva as she moved closer. He wasn't afraid of her hurting him. Not really. He was afraid of what would happen to her and Kamyuhn without him there to help the others see reason. For now, all he could do was bide his time. He needed a plan. One that he was hoping she would help him workshop. That hope was beginning to look rather naive.

She didn't believe him. That was to be expected. It seemed outrageous. But it was true. This was his third time coming back. This time, his desired location had been much more concrete. The day he wanted to return to. The day he allowed Sirei to put his hands on her.

"I know it seems far-fetched, but it's true. I can go back in time in short bursts in battle. But if I get enough strength, I can go back way further. This is my second time going back. The first time... Well, it ended up with that future I explained." It had been a nightmare. But now he had the chance to make things right. At least, he hoped he did. He would have preferred to go back further, to prevent any of his friends at all from dying. But with him so focused on the day Eva was brainwashed, maybe it influenced things.

Seeing her cry made him feel guilty again. He averts his gaze. She asks about Kamyuhn and... He considers lying. But that wouldn't work. They needed to have a certain level of trust to be comrades.

"She's alive." He says quietly. "But almost the entire rebellion died. Everyone here was dead. Even though I managed to take the power from the weapon in the defense room... Vehxness still went after the rebellion. And... Well, humanity started attacking again."

In truth, it had been a choice the two of them had come to together. Takumi would come back and fix things. Save Eva and his friends. Win the war and save the planet from humanity and the sovereign army.

"I came back to stop that future. But I can't do it without your help. I'm not asking you to trust me entirely. At least let me find a way to safely get you back to Kamyuhn. It might take a little bit of time, but... Please, Eva."

There was a voice in the back of her head trying to break her even further. It was her sister’s voice. It rattled her, mocking her for even giving these humans a glimpse of sympathy or a tear from her pain. She could hear every form of degradation she could muster thrown at her. Eva knew she had to find a minuscule amount of trust in this human even if her sister was against the idea, because when it came to Kamyuhn’s safety, she’d endure it all. 

He also knew so much about her. So much about a daughter who led a clandestine life. Bit by bit, she was coming to believe him more. “She is?” It slipped out as a whimper. “V’ehxness.” That… came out as a growl. “My si– she never considers those around her as individuals but more as fodder for war. And, despite this, I can sympathize with her beliefs. Our land was ravaged by greedy humans. But our people shouldn’t have to pay the price. Do you even know how long we’ve been fighting your kind?!” Why does her sister always bring out the worst in her?

Eva rests on her knees, eyes focusing on the next thing to say. “Sorry, Kamyuhn has such a harsh mother. I didn’t mean to snap at you like that.” She bit the skin of her lip and continued. “All that matters is that she’s alive. I want to see her again. You’re saying if I follow your lead, this can be a possibility? What do you need me to do?”

❝ Took you long enough Eva! ❞ She huffs in annoyance and the glare she's giving her mother looks more like a pout than anything of true anger. ❝ And I didn't 'get myself' into anything, I don't know why I was getting picked on. ❞

"Don't take that tone with me! And remember to call me mother." Even if she told Kamyuhn 100 times to call her mother, she knew Kamyuhn wouldn't. In a deep sigh, Eva pats her head. The girl's hair was a bit ruffled by her constant shaking. She took the time to brush the loose strands away from her face. "Picked on?!" Eva groaned. "Who is bullying you? I would like to speak to them... kindly."

"A-angel? I don't think that's true... I'm just a paragon."

Holding Kamyuhn up by the scruff, letting her dangle a few feet off the ground!

Eva chuckled, shaking her head. "Now, what did you get yourself into this time?" She took a few minutes to "save her." The dangling girl finally looked innocent and helpless. It reminded her of the first time they met.

“Detective time!” Eva pulled out her magnifying glass. It was the most superior of them all since it was given to her by the best detective in the world: Kako Tsukumo! There was something familiar about playing these silly games with a child. Something she wanted to remember, but couldn’t put her finger on it. Every time she tried, a splitting headache erased a sliver of that memory. “What will we search for today?” Eva smiled brightly. 

── .❀ Several days earlier… “Please, please, please, don’t do this! I beg of you! I’ll do anything!” After being taken in by the enemy, Eva was strapped to a strange chair. A pair of metallic sheets tightly clasped her wrists and ankles. Any chance of escaping was on the battlefield. Now, she had become a prisoner of war. “I promise I won’t hurt anyone!” A machine dressed as a strange, transparent doll never looked her in the eyes. It acted completely stoically as if emotions weren’t important to it. Every scream was drowned out by its lack of empathy. There was nothing left to do but accept whatever punishment came her way. 

A helmet slowly descended from an opening above her. It completely covered the top of her head. “What is this?” Her voice cracked. “Y-you said you were helping me, right?” Another egg-shaped machine walked in. It carried a sorrowful expression that didn’t help Eva feel any better than before. Worried settled into sweats. “Oh, you poor thing! Will this hurt Miss Eva?” It asked the other. “Quiet!” The first egg with the hat snapped back. “It doesn’t matter. We just need her to be diligent enough for the students.” Eva’s eyes widened. Before she could protest, the machine whirred awake. 

── .❀ Present Eva carried all the necessary equipment needed to begin their investigation, down to the attire. But Eva’s hat was a little snug. She took it off and began adjusting it. “Maybe you should wear it. I bet you’d look very pretty.”  For a split second, she pictured a different girl and nearly broke the hat's strap. With a quick shake of her head, she smiled once more.

“Kamyuhn!” Eva clawed at the doors, bits of blood trailing the edges, as the soldiers pulled her away. “Stop it! Please! She’s just a baby!” Her pleas fell on deaf ears. Who would listen to her while V’ehxness watched? It took several men to remove her from the scene– a familiar room painted in blood. She bit, kicked, and pushed away her oppressors, but it wasn’t enough. Eva reached towards the closing doorway. “Sister, please! I’ll do anything, just don’t touch her!” A screech echoed. “𝐊𝐚𝐦𝐲𝐮𝐡𝐧!!” And that was the last she saw of her. The enclosure they threw her in felt natural. It was similar to the locked room she’d grown up in all her life. A place where, when her adopted father and sister would fight, felt safe. After her display earlier that day, this was her punishment. She curled up and placed her head on her knees, still picturing the face of a little girl staring back at her in fright. War was always a part of their lives; however, when they fought amongst themselves, they were no better than the invaders. At least, that is how Eva felt about the situation. Her thoughts coiled into an infinite loop. The thoughts were debating the necessity of her sisters' actions and coming to no conclusion that could justify the killing of their own. Day after day, more innocent lives are spilled, and for what? The invaders weren’t backing down; they needed more people than before. Paragons were symbols, beacons of hope that carried weapons into the arms of their people. Worst of it all, these weren’t merely commoners; they were family. The tears on her face had dried up, and that anxious choking feeling subsided. She felt empty. A husk of a woman cradled herself. Nature’s savior wilted. Eva examined her cuffs. The woman who stared back in the steel's reflection was unrecognizable. Prior to all this, they had already been fighting. Patches of dirt, blood stains, and scratches masked her true features. “I’m sorry.” She whispered to the wind. And it seemed to answer back with a soft breeze along her skin. That’s when she realized the door had creaked open.

An unexpected face entered the academy. At first, Eva wanted to scold him for being caught so easily, but she noticed they weren’t being hostile towards him. There was a clear difference between how she was treated when she first arrived and how he is being introduced to the SDU now. It was a bit daunting. “Addamaque…” She whispered. Several days had gone by since her captivity. After the strange mechanical egg was killed, they opted to remove her from her cage and acclimate her to their ranks. A secret promise was made between her and their leader, and now she can fight alongside them. Prior to that, they had done something to her. Memories are split between blind obedience and a singular person. It hurt to fight the two, but they were at constant war with each other. Eva locked the door behind them. “What are you doing, Addamaque? How did you gain their favor?” They were in the infirmary. The only place Eva felt they could speak without the others listening in on them. She assumed, despite them being a part of this menagerie of teenage war criminals, they still didn’t trust them. “Do… do you know if Kamyuhn is OK?”

Takumi felt sick. Cater to his needs? Given what he had just learned, he tried to reject it. But he couldn't force himself to speak. He was too busy trying to control his breathing. He gasped when she steadied his weight. He yelled at her not to touch him.

But why? Because this... this was his fault. He didn't deserve the concern or the help. He still remembered her screams. Her begging when they first captured her. Did he make the wrong call? Was it better to just kill her?

He finally found his voice when she slung his arm over her shoulder. She had no clue what he was apologizing for. She didn't even realize what horrible thing had happened to her. Takumi felt his stomach twist into a tight knot. He... He felt faint.

"No. It's not the Invaders. This is... My own fault." At the very least, Eva easily accepted his orders overwriting the previous one. He couldn't shake a sense of dread. He did not want Eva to speak to whoever did this. He didn't even want her to tell them her orders had changed. He couldn't discount the idea of this person trying to force her into it by other methods.

"I'm alright. I just got a little... dizzy. Probably because I didn't sleep last night." A half lie. But he had to compose himself. This was his responsibility. The question of WHO would come later. When they were alone.

"I'll leave a note in the cage explaining that I'll be needing you for a little bit. You're still cleaning so... I don't want you to have to stop doing that to find this person. After that, I need you to help me with some tasks around the school to prepare for battles." He was just going to bring her along for his regular prep.

"But tonight, I need you to come to my room, alright?" He felt angry. Betrayed. Guilty. A cocktail of feelings he couldn't swallow. None of it was at her, of course. It was at himself and... whoever would do such a thing.

"I'll explain the details of the tasks I'm going to need you for then, okay?" That meant he had the rest of the day to think of a fake mission.

“It isn’t your fault, Mr. Sumino.” It was a strange sentiment given how she didn’t have the faintest idea as to why he felt so sickly. The signs were all there, but they were blind to her. “Every day, we work very hard to kill the invaders. Sometimes we push ourselves beyond our limits. And that is fine. As long as we win this war, everything will be OK.” Why did it feel as though she was trying to convince herself? A trigger kept setting off in her mind. It told her that these students need to be protected at all costs. All… costs… protect.

“Understood.” Eva ducked even lower, hoping to get a good grip on his body to help him steady himself once more. “I am nearly finished here, but your safety is a priority. Please do not push yourself too hard. The others need you.” A smile settled upon her lips. There was a flavor to them that tasted ever sweeter than before.

“I have to organize the books, place the chairs underneath the tables, clean the cafeteria,” She went on and on about her current assignments, then finished with one last request, “Then I will retire to your room….” Something struck her heart. Was this a semblance of fear? Tasks shouldn’t scare her, but the last time another boy asked her to go to his room alone at night, she had to do a strange task. Her brow twitched. “Tonight.”

Of course, he upset her again. Takumi's teary eyes drifted to her. She didn't believe him so easily. Of course she didn't. He was an enemy. An invader. A threat to their very planet. The final wave of weapons meant to complete the genocide of her people. Even if, for a brief moment, he thought he had her convinced.

He wasn't good at anything but killing. Why would this be any different? He rapidly felt his resolve crack. He was carrying the hopes and dreams of so many people. But he was weak. Too weak to carry them properly. To save anyone.

"Wait I...!" He didn't have her. Eva thought it was a threat, didn't she? Or that he was lying. He blinked away his tears, trying to pick up the pieces of his heart and carry on for now.

"I don't HAVE her. I don't even know where she is right now." This was delicate. Saving Eva was important. As much as he deserved to die by her hand, she wouldn't get out of here safely without him to vouch for her.

"I would never hurt her! I..." Crap... What should he do? He stayed on the ground, at her mercy. He wasn't a threat to her or Kamyuhn. But how could he make her see that?

"I came from the future! At this point, I don't know what she's doing. I'm sure she's out there doing her best! Probably worried about you. No one else but me and you know any of this. We need to tread carefully... I know the others will come around but..." He tried not to say it, even think it. That this was enemy territory. Until he could win the others over, it was.

"Just give me a chance to prove myself... If I fail and you can't trust me, you can kill me. I deserve it."

A weight lifted from her when he said he didn’t know Kamyuhn’s location. Even if it was a lie, for that split moment, she could see herself feeling better. The initial threat was what set her ablaze, but now it was extinguished. By no means did she believe him. On the contrary, it made her more alert. It means that she could still keep her daughter safe. She was learning more about them. Even from this conversation, she could see they, too, can feel shame, regret, and love.

As he spoke, Eva advanced, closing the space between them. When he mentioned that he came from the future, she stopped. Did he really expect her to believe such an act to be true? Even Nyewgank could only rewind time in short bursts. And their Paragon feats were blessings from God. Do these invaders also possess such godlike powers? Eva’s eyes locked onto the ground, her feet pointed inward. Begging to be released wasn’t going to work. It bought her a small amount of time. Yet, her time on this planet may be ending soon if she continues to push buttons. She’d need to think of another plan. “The future?” She bit her lip, trying to salvage any bit of empathy she could muster for him. “That is ridiculous, you know?” Eva was too honest sometimes. However, there was only one way to captivity: to do what he asked of her. “And this future…”

With tears streaming down her cheeks, she lifts her head and looks at him. “Is Kamyuhn safe there?” A lump of regret swelled her throat, and her voice trembled. The future is unknown, and such a power to see it isn’t real. So, why did she want to know if Kamyuhn was alive and well? “Is my little girl happy? If you can tell me that..” Then I can die happy. “Then I’ll do what you wish.”

"I understand that is your wish, but I was told by that individual that it must be kept a secret. However, I will be spending my day with Mr. Sumino. If you have other requests, please let me know how I can help you."

"I am unsure if I am following. Did you need assistance? I will assist in any way I can with killing the invaders."

He waited almost patiently while Eva finished her task. Shifting his weight slightly, feeling nervousness chewing on his senses. He kept telling himself he was overthinking things. It was his own guilt about what he had done that made him worry.

Despite her smile and the ease of her words... Takumi's stomach dropped almost instantly. And each sentence was worst than the last. Terror clawed at his chest. He clenched a fist so tightly at his side that it hurt.

He wanted to tell her to stop. To cover his ears and pretend he never heard it. To return to ignorance. Because this was all his fault. It had lingered in his mind when Eva was forced to kill her own, when he helped rewrite her mind, and now again... Had he really been merciful capturing her instead of killing her?

His worst fears were confirmed and... Takumi's chest hurt. Panic and guilt swirled together into something terrible. He leans against the desk behind him, his hand tangling in his shirt. He couldn't breathe. He didn't want this. This isn't what he wanted. Why? Who could do something so terrible? How could one of his 'friends' do this? He realized that his breathing had become frantic, uneven. That he had broken into a cold sweat. For a moment, Takumi truly thought that he should throw himself onto the ground and beg for her forgiveness.

But... she was so broken that she didn't even know what she should hate him for. And it was all his fault.

The world had seemingly lost color as Takumi's mind raced, hanging onto her words. For a brief moment, he realizes that he probably deserves to be hurt for this. If there was some kind of divine force weighing the sins of mankind, this would be his most grave sin.

And then the last part of her 'command' caught up with him.

"Wait — No! I... I need you tomorrow night. And tonight. I have a special mission I need you for! And if that person asks, tell them that you have prior orders!" The words tumbled out of his mouth with no thought.

He knew Eva likely wouldn't expose the person, but he had a few ideas. Still, he... He didn't know how to proceed. His eyes moved to the ground beneath his feet. He finally found balance again. Though he felt shaky and unsteady on his feet.

It's all my fault. I did this to her. If it wasn't for me... I'm so sorry.

"You are NOT to do anything like that again, okay? And if anyone asks, say you have a prior assignment with me." He didn't care if people that badly about it or got upset. He was not letting this happen again.

There was a sort of crushing horrible feeling over his soul. A strange desire that he had only felt a handful of times in his life. A strong desire to hurt himself. Punish himself. But he tries to focus on her instead. He needed to be strong right now.

"I'm sorry, Eva...."

Though she didn’t feel concern, an internal instinct prompted her to ask, “Are you feeling alright, Mr. Sumino?” He was looking worse for wear. She noticed his already pale features were devoid of color. His body was trembling. “If you’re feeling unwell, then allow me to cater to your needs, as well.” Eva was given a bag filled with several different emergency items by another student. Inside were some sleep aids, small towels, antihistamines, and minor tourniquets used to bandage up a wound. She took out a small handkerchief and wrapped it into a square. Before she could try to quell his ailment, he stifled back. She rushed forward to steady his weight. “Mr. Sumino, let’s go to the infirmary. You need medical attention.” He felt hot to the touch. There were clear signs that his body was falling ill. Eva couldn’t comprehend what could have made him feel so terrible. She couldn’t comprehend anything. She merely acted upon instinct. If his body was weak and unable to perform in battle, then she needed to do everything she could to cleanse his sickness. “The invaders must have hurt you. We must kill them and win the war.” What was winning the war? Why was that thought suddenly appearing? It muffled in her mind and was barely audible. But she knew she had asked it. It lingered as an echo, trying to repel unnecessary commands.

He spoke again. Her eyes locked onto him, and she dropped her smile. “I will do as you wish.” There was no hesitation, as if she wanted to deny herself that other task but didn’t understand why. “I will inform him that I can no longer assist in –” She caught herself. “I’ll be working with the Leader Commander Takumi Sumino from here on forward. That is my new objective. However, if Mr. Sirei changes it, I will have to apply his new directive.” Eva continued to help him, gently grabbing his arm to place it over her shoulder. “You do not need to be sorry, Mr. Sumino. Then, she removed the plastic gloves she was using and discarded them in the trash. After, she placed her black ones back on. “If I was wrong, please punish me.” Every word she spoke had barely a breath to them. Just as mechanical as her body language. She stood before him and bowed, then continued her conversation. “I will recount the evening endeavours.”

Eva’s eye twitched, still smiling brightly. “After my usual chores, I was told by a fellow student to help them prepare a bath. I was to bring the necessary items: bath bubbles, scrubbing brushes, and towels. They had the other items needed for the duty. I went into their room and was told to assist them with their shower.
