I think something a lot of people don't get is that they think Zionism is Jewish supremacy, when in reality it's Jewish nationalism. And they don't get what nationalism is either. Right-wing, populist, ULTRAnationalist parties like the GOP, Reform UK, Vox or AfD have stolen the word and turned it into "xenophobia". All it means is that nations have the right to their own state that protects them.
If you think the US should exist, you're an American nationalist. If you think China should exist, you're a Chinese nationalist. If you think Germany should exist, you're a German nationalist. Anti-Zionism means you desire the destruction of the only Jewish state.

The Great Pivot
In 1948, the USSR actually supported Israel. But when Israel aligned with the West, the Soviets needed a way to turn the "Global South" against them. They launched a massive ideological campaign to rebrand Zionism (the movement for Jewish self-determination) as a form of "white supremacist colonialism."
They created a state-sponsored "science" called Zionology. The goal was simple: make Zionism synonymous with the world’s greatest evils (Nazism, Racism, and Imperialism) so that opposing Israel became a "progressive" moral requirement.
The crowning achievement of this era was the 1975 UN Resolution declaring "Zionism is a form of racism." This wasn't a grassroots human rights initiative; it was a Soviet-led diplomatic hit job.
Though the UN revoked it in 1991, the damage was permanent. It gave activists a "scholarly" and "international" license to treat the Jewish state as uniquely illegitimate. When you see modern infographics using these exact terms, you are seeing the tail-end of a 50-year-old Soviet PR campaign.

I think part of what drives me so nuts about the whole Israel/Palestine discourse online in general is like.
There are actual, real issues that we could talk about. We could talk about the systemic issues in Israel, the problems (the BIG problems) with the Israeli government. We could discuss the settlements in the West Bank, we could discuss the issues with extremism within Zionism.
We COULD do all of that and possibly have some really great, productive conversations about how to fix these issues!
But we can’t, because right now every single Jew who DOES want to talk about that stuff is instead busy combatting waves of both Nazi and Soviet era antisemitism at literally every fucking turn, and we can’t discuss how to make things better in Israel for everyone until seemingly fucking EVERYONE ELSE stops advocating for our fucking genocide.
Because a civil discussion and bettering was never part of the point. The whole point was ALWAYS to kill the Jews. The Palestinian National Cause was invented, cultivated and funded to be used as a cudgel against Israel and the Jews worldwide.

i think hamas and hezbollah and the irgc and basically every terrorist organization hellbent on killing the jews makes a little more sense or is at least more morbidly interesting to look at when you view it under the lens of them being people who just don't know how much power they've lost. because the arab conquests happened so long ago that landback people refuse to acknowledge that colonization happened in the first place, and in that time across the entire world really there were basically zero consequences for oppressing jews. nul. efes. because sure there was that occasional pesky uprising but anyone but jews caring about antisemitism is a very very recent historical development. and at the end of the day these groups are religious extremists, and religious extremists more often than not are people so conservative they're basically stuck in the middle ages. so like yeah they're aware that the jews have a state and an army now and all that but just by the osmosis of the kind of culture they live in and absorb jews are still viewed as something very destructible. a century or two ago you could commit a massacre, you could commit many massacres against jews and walk away relatively unscathed. but now jews have actual agency in the world and we have the power to retaliate, retaliate hard even, and that simply doesn't register to the islamist mind. it doesn't compute.
