This last request was one Thorin could not honour to his deepest regret.

In general I think the people who bitch loudest about Bombadil being cut from every single abridged adaptation of LOTR haven't given any real thought to how they themselves would go about pruning down that unwieldy beast of a novel while preserving that particular side quest.

HOWEVER,

I am now madly obsessed with the idea of Matt Berry playing Tom Bombadil. This casting has put me in a 180° from thinking no production could do the character justice to knowing in my bones that the perfect actor is out there and would probably jump at the part.

crazy that elrond is just walking around in his garden with his hobbit friend reading books and eating dinner or something and then you remember he's. the great grandson of THEEE LUTHIEN. the luthien of legend!!! and then the great grandson of TURGON! literal KING OF GONDOLIN. and then you calm down a bit and then immediately stop again because now you've remembered that if we go back another generation we've reached THINGOL and FINGOLFIN – the merging of elwë and finwë's folk. you know, the OGs?? he could (theoretically) be king of both the sindar (and all the teleri tbh) and the noldor......... that's like 2/3 of the big three groups of elves? he's one of the only living descendants of the high kings of the past, and not in a ridiculously distant way like aragorn is. he... he could be the king of the whole world honestly. and he isn't. he doesn't want to be.......he wants to be the lord of a haven where people can rest and heal and grow and learn and talk and love.......he chooses peace and serenity and safety over glory. he's his ancestors but actually successful. he's the sun. he's beautiful. he's as strong as a warrior. he's as wise as a wizard. he's as kind as summer. he's the bestest boy in the whole world. This is missing one key part of Elrond's ancestry. Yes, he was the great-great-grandson of Thingol. But he is also the great-great-grandson of Melian, AKA, a literal fucking goddess. But not just any goddess, specifically a goddess who left Valinor to come to Middle-Earth in order establish a haven where people can rest and heal and grow and learn and talk and love. So, it's not exactly surprising that Elrond turned out like he did.

I would never presume to reduce LOTR to a simple WW1 allegory, but I could also never ignore that the real arc of the story leads from “we are going on a fun adventure” to “oh. we really are going to die here.” The terrible and very gradual understanding of what war really is. The moment when you first say out loud that you might not, or might not all make it home, and the corresponding moment, much later, when you actually understand, when you really, truly understand that you might not make it home.

I think Elrond and Celebrimbor bond so well because they’ve both been set up for failure by their families, and they’ve both come from ancestors that have done a not okay job at ruiling people or acting right in elven society, so i’m sure people are expecting them to fail.

Elrond? Turgon’s grandson, creating a realm of elves? Is he gonna let people leave if they want to, or is he going to kill them? If someone were to bring a shiny object known to cause death into Rivendell, is he going to keep it there and let everyone else die like his mother did? Is he going to screw over his relationship with the dwarves like Thingol? Is he going to abandon them to go look for his parents in Valinor?

Do Elrond and Glorfindel have a heart-to-heart about boundaries. Like “Elrond, if I want to leave, will you throw me off a cliff?”

Celebrimbor, son of Curufin, need I say more? And he’s a blacksmith too? AND he likes jewels? And apparently he looks just like Feanor? Again, need I say more?

And both were raised by kinslayers, so that’s another strike against them.

They’re families are ALL taboo, and have done questionably things that have caused harm and damage to innocent elves. I’m sure they had to prove themselves worthy of their titles and their lands, and that gaining trust because of what their parents and ancestors have done wasn’t easy.

I also think this is why they’re so close in ROP because they have much to account for.

I don’t think being trusted by elven society was easy for them. I think people probably expect them to fail, and unfortunately for Celebrimbor, he did.
