The Traveller’s Overwatch Mains
So, I came to the realisation recently that the start of darkness for Worm’s Travellers was the fact that they had six players for a game that only has teams of five and so they couldn’t all go pro: if only they had been playing Overwatch instead.
That led me to wonder what characters each of them would play…
Noelle, their team leader before the ‘accident’, played a tank in the rpg the Travellers played. She was tactically minded and relied on her intuition, so she’d hardly be satisfied just standing there with her shield as Reinhardt. Instead, she’d play D.Va, ready for the exact moment to switch from acting as main tank to diving in with the others.
Krouse (Trickster): Lucio
Krouse, the team’s new addition, would have been both eager to prove himself to the team and distrustful of the support that members other than Noelle would provide him. He’d naturally be drawn to Lucio, a support hero who could survive by himself, and Lucio’s speed and position play matches his aptitude as the telelporting cape Trickster. Plus, there’s no way that manipulative Trickster would have missed the symbolism given by the mutual fannishness of D.Va and Lucio.
Mars was the most pacifistic of the Travellers, and definitely the one most freaked out by the powers she acquires in Earth Bet. I really doubt they reflected her style as a player. Instead, she’d have been drawn towards Mercy’s pure healing, and Mercy’s graceful flight would have appealed to her as a (ex-)dancer.
Ballistic was… not exactly subtle. And he was aggressive. No wonder he chose the most “hardcore” of the offence heroes. He was definitely skilled though, and Genji play came to him naturally. He could place those shurikens with an accuracy that would be reflected when he threw warning shots at the Brockton Bay Wards.
Jess was the Traveller’s ‘Overlord’: the player responsible for establishing the defences they used against opposing teams. Map-control comes naturally to Jess, as does play using entities other than her actual character.
Possibly, she would have convinced to switch to Winston on attack, to support the Dive-comp used by the rest of her team. But even then, Symmetra would have been her favourite, and I can easily imagine that in this AU Jess was eventually responsible for the popularisation of Symmetra at World-class levels.
Of course, Tracer exactly matches Cody’s powers as Perdition. But that’s not all: it’s implied that Cody has been with the rest of the gang from the beginning (Hence his annoyance at being shuffled out for Krouse) and his straightforward motivations would have naturally settled on the game’s mascot.
In this AU, fortunately, there’s no need for conflict between Cody and Krouse, and the team could have prospered without being dragged into another world, manipulated by the Simurgh. and wrecking everyone’s day.
