ksdfh i was decidedly NOT going to add onto this but this idea has been plaguing me for WEEKS its come to a point where im lich rally talking 2 myself in my head so you will now all be subject into a deep dive of the 15 minutes of book time clarisse gets thru out the series
in SoM when she accepts the quest itβs been made clear to us that not a lot of people like clarisse at camp, with people calling her weapon (gifted to her by her DAD) names behind her back and going as far as sticking notes into her back which even her cabinmates dont point out to her and so clarisse is aware of that to some extent, so it isnt that farfetched to think that clarisse expected to be alone on that quest, to the sea of monsters of all places - whether out of fear or hatred
anw she STILL accepts the quest, even with knowing how dangerous it is, and frm her reaction we KNOW that itβs because she finally gets the opportunity to bring honor to her father, to her cabin, despite possibly knowing that she wld have 2 go to this quest alone
itβs made even more obvious when percy interjects and says its his quest since the dream came to him and that grover is his friend, with her reaffirming it more firmly and with far more conviction than when she says it the first time
and then we fast forward to the sea of monsters where sheβs shown to be alone, implying that she didnβt back out even when her cabinmates didnβt want to go, because it was finally her chance to be the hero, finally her chance to bring the honor her father demanded of herΒ
the way she says THIS, despite knowing the prophecy and what it entails, despite knowing that the oracle clearly stated that she would fail without friends, she insists that she would be able to do it on her own and tries to defy the strings of fate and prophecy because, as weβre clearly shown in the scene with clarisse and ares,Β
her father demanded success and wouldnβt stand for failure, not when she was carrying his name and while sailing his ship, not when he gave her the chance to bring honor to him and their cabin, because above all the greeks expected honor, would do anything for it, because to them honor meant more than pride, and no matter how deadly hubris as a fatal flaw is, honor is so much more.
finally, the prime example of her having this fatal flaw would be in tlo where she decides to withdraw her cabin from the war because of the feud with apollo
honor, by definition, is high respect and great esteem, both of which the ares cabin have been denied again and again and again. people make fun of clarisse behind her back, call her spearΒ βlamerβ. no one sided with her when it came to the loot, and the honor of her cabin was wounded, so despite being a child of the god of war, despite knowing that withdrawing could possibly tip the scales in favour of the titans, she withdrew and told them that they would have to fight without ares. fatal flaws are exactly what the name is, and in succumbing to it, in allowing it to cloud her judgement, clarisse, in a way, led to herself into her own tragedy, where silena, one of the people most important to her, died. her having honor as her fatal flaw makes so much sense, because sheβs greek, so so very greek, and the greeks invented tragedy, and so in succumbing to her fatal flaw, clarisse made her own, and i had a point w this and idk if it was made but its just. SO interesting to think about
