AMS reviewed
Alma Mater Society of Queen’s University: Social Media use and Branding
Executive Summary:
This report assesses the social media and branding effectiveness of the Alma Mater Society (AMS) of Queens University. It analyzes the AMS’ current social media practices, and prescribes changes aimed at improving the total reach and engagement for the organization’s online promotions and communications.
Social Media Channels:
The AMS’ social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and their website, myams.org. was reviewed and evaluated. These four outlets are the way that AMS primarily distributes information to their target audience, however, they also use monthly email newsletters to get out key information. Assessing their use of these four primary communication channels and providing opportunities for growth and improvement, while maintaining a consistent brand will lead to improved reach and engagement. Each channel will be examined separately, pointing to strengths and weaknesses, as well as an overall analysis of the AMS brand.
Overall Brand:
The AMS has a consistent brand across all social media channels, with the AMS logo, consistent font use, and even consistent colour pallets being used for different categories of posts / pages across all platforms. The AMS has a Brand Manager which clearly has a great impact on visual identity standards being upheld.
Strengths-general
· Ample cross-links. Cross links in posts from AMS to other sources was used effectively in most cases.
· Professional page layout. Each media site has a casual business feeling to its appropriate layout (e.g. Facebook page is setup for an organization with a contact messenger.)
· Dissemination of a vast variety of information; social, educational, resources, etc..
Weaknesses-general
· Posts are inconsistently timed. The frequency of posts is sporadic; inconsistent among media platforms.
· Post content is text heavy. Users engaging with AMS on social media are seeking quick updates and basic information.
· Lacking platform engagement. Many posts do not receive many likes, comments or shares.
· Overuse of Logo and similar post formats may be causing brand dilution, which will damage recognition overtime (Finkle, 2018)
Platform Specific Comments
· Many posts with heavy text
· Inconsistent
· A battery of posts followed by no posts
· Very sporadic posts
· Mostly shared Facebook posts
· Underutilized potential for tags and cross-links
· Good spacing between posts
· Strong engagement
· More playful and light
Webpage
· Effective information communication
· Good use of cross-links
· Inconsistency with fonts and formatting between web pages
Recommendations:
We find that while the AMS is doing many things right, there is some potential for improvement. While Twitter is underutilized, the target audience does not actually use Twitter (Kats, 2018), and is more likely to use Instagram, followed by Facebook, making these two channels far more important.
Through more regularly scheduled posts, with minimal textual information, and a more informal style, the AMS could increase its post engagement.
AMS has a very strong, consistent identity among its media platforms. The use of the logo, recognizable graphics, and layout across platforms is visually appealing, but lacks total consistency. Having a visually appealing presence will attract the user’s attention, (Smith, 2017) and being consistent over platforms will build trust with the audience.
The AMS is most lacking in post content. Their posts need to be lighter with less text and information on their Instagram, Facebook and Twitter platforms. These three specifically should have engagement-first thinking when posts are being made. The voice of the posts needs to be more oriented towards asking the audience things such as content ideas, advice, or even a general question. (Rampton, 2014)
Recommendations:
What needs to be done as a result of our findings:
- Posts need to be done daily at the most, weekly at the least.
- Posts should differ across platforms even if the information is the same or similar.
- Post context among “lighter” platforms like Instagram and Twitter should be briefer and contain more images and titles that capture the audience’s attention. For detailed information, the user can be linked back to the main AMS web page.
- AMS needs to orient their posts to generate more user interactions. Posts need to have a different voice.
- Posts that include polls, Instagram/Facebook stories and even giveaways/trivia can be effective to gather more user interaction.
- Use hashtags across all platforms to make content more searchable by users. Employ the use of existing hashtags and create new ones specific to AMS to tie content to other similar and relevant posts and increase appearances in searches.
- Cross link with other organizations within Queen’s University, for example, The Queen’s newspaper

Got a Business? Get SEO!
If you have a business, you need an on-line presence. If you have an on-line presence you need #SEO. Wait- What is SEO? Search Engine Optimization is the use of a search engine’s algorithms to improve your website page rank. Now you’re asking, “Why does that matter to me?”. Well, it matters because over 90% of internet users start their web search with a search engine. 83% of those people use Google, so that’s the engine we’ll discuss, but other search engines work the same way. When the search results are returned, the first page is as far as most Google users go, 94% in fact. The first result page is where you will find 2 or 3 paid ads and then the most meaningful answers to your search as determined by Google. How does Google, and any other search engine determine the significance of a web page to your search? There are 2 factors, the first being key words. The search engine will assess how many times the key words a searcher inputs appear on your page and in what location. If they appear often and in the way most searchers would phrase them, your page will come up in the search results, but not necessarily in the first page… or even 15th page. Be careful you aren’t “stuffing” your page with keywords. That can backfire. You need to make your website appealing to the people who will be visiting it, not just the robots who pick key words. The search may bring them to your web page, but you need to engage the visitor, so they stay there. Lots of resources are available on how to choose your key words and where to place those words and phrases on your page to optimize results. You really want your web page to appear in the 1st results page so the 94% don’t simply change their parameters and search again. The best way to get to the first page? Relevance! How does one achieve relevance? Backlinks! How often is your web page mentioned on other websites, blogs, social media pages and discussion boards? The more often your site is mentioned by trustworthy sources, the higher the degree of relevance your page is given. Good backlinking requires time and effort, but the results are proven. It’s worth your time to make sure your business is Search Engine Optimized. Your customer is going to find the business or service they are looking for on-line. Why not make sure it’s yours they find?

Halfway to Empty
Hi, my name is Rebecca. I am a university student, a chocolate salesperson, a volunteer and a single mom. The role that I have always taken the most joy in is that of a mother. I have two amazing sons. They have always been my primary career. Mothering has been my vocation I suppose.
Last summer I launched my first born out in to the world. Not just to the next city, or somewhere a few hours drive away; but to Calgary Alberta. A four-hour flight from our Ontario home. Why so far away one might ask? What does Alberta offer that Ontario doesn’t? Well, my son is a speed skater. A pretty good one. He was invited to join the National Training Program. Of course, I encouraged him. What good mother doesn’t support her kid’s dreams? He was also accepted to the University of Calgary’s science program (smart kid too). We made all the preparations. We found him a beautiful off campus home, shipped his belongings out west on a Greyhound bus and flew out to meet them.
I spent five days with him in Calgary, doing all the things that parents do when they leave their kids at university, and we found some time for a “last” adventure to the mountains. It was amazing. I knew with every fiber of my being that he would love life out west.
And then I left him.
I cried the whole flight home. I didn’t for one second doubt the rightness of our decision. I didn’t worry that he would starve or forget to do laundry or get lost on campus. He would do what he always does…. study hard and train hard. What I didn’t expect and was in no way ready for was the physical ache in my gut. It’s still there. I’ve just gotten better at burying it deep underneath the frenetic pace of my every day life.
Why am I still feeling such grief at times? I’m so happy and proud. He has accomplished everything I thought he would and then some, but I miss him. Hard. I miss tripping on his size 14 Jordan’s by the front door and never having any food in the fridge despite grocery shopping nearly every day. The time when my son needed me is over. His childhood is over.
I lead a full and joyful life. I have self care and wellness time. I spend lots of time with my younger son and my boyfriend. Am I doing this wrong?
I’ve heard all about empty nest syndrome, but I thought it was for people launching their last child. When I look at social media everyone seems to be reveling in their newfound freedom. Hopefully I can get to that place before I launch my next son in five years!
