i'm not the first to hc this but: yami bakura absolutely has had previous hosts. strong candidates for best bakura moments throughout history: lord byron. tarrare. empedocles. alexander the great (CANON! LOL). rasputin. william crush. etc. most of his hosts are mundane. poor suckers who stumbled upon a shiny golden dreamcatcher and didn't live long to remember it.

as much as yamiba would HATE to admit it, ryou has influence over him. he kind of absorbs a significant part of his current host's personality. as such i also hc that ryou is more turbulent and spiteful-minded than he lets on. it's just that ryou doesn't act on those impulses like his yami does.

i think there's still a good person buried deep under the thousands of years of hosts and memories and grief. i won't mince words, tkb was absolutely justified in his actions. terribly misguided, but justified. if we could unzorcify bakura, he and yami yugi would make for one helluva seriously unhealthy power couple.

the more yugioh I play the more I start to understand why everybody in the yugioh universe is just completely insane. this is not a game for normal people. you play five duels and start to realize why yugioh characters are always ready to kill each other. I'm having the time of my life.

So, YamiMa is the part of the identity that has to deal with the trauma. He was the backup. No one else was going to help. It was find a way to survive because everyone else is too conflict avoidant and will let bad shit happen forever, and I identify with the need to not only survive, but to ACT in those situations.

He stopped the problem. Was it moral? No. But nothing happening to the Ishtar children was moral and everyone seemed fine with letting that slide every damn day. People have this weird habit of crying morality whenever a victim finally reflects back the damage they take over and over again. They only get upset when "immoral" means "now we have to change because you forced the issue" YamiMa killed their dad, so they couldn't just go on living in an underground cult and pretending they were a respectful family anymore.

Funny that no one ever yelled at Ishtar senior for being immoral for whipping Rishid almost to death and then going after his 11 year old son with a knife. No, it's "discipline" or "the law" when the System is violent, and "immoral" when anyone bucks the system.

tl;dr Yami Malik is my favorite because he endures too much too young, but also flights back and gives Malik (them) a chance to *get the fuck away* I both relate to and respect that.
