@arfid-is-hecc
Since I've got people ignoring the DNI in my Bio:
A/n/a and/or w*ght l*ss blogs DNI. I WILL report you on sight.
You don't have to be malnourished to have ARFID you don't have to experience drastic weight loss to have ARFID you don't have to be skinny to have ARFID these are not requirements I am screaming this from the fucking roofs can anyone hear me
One of my (least?) favorite things about telling people I have ARFID is when they hit me with “you’d never survive out in the wild” like yes!! Thank you!! I would not!! It’s a great thing that i will not have to do that anytime soon!!
“arfid isn’t that bad, just try new foods!” it’s a psychological disorder. if i do not have access to safe foods, i will quite literally starve myself.
People get mad at me for talking about it unless I’m trying to “fix” it and it doesn’t work like that for me. I don’t want to try foods sometimes.
A hill i will die standing on is that picky eaters deserve respect and accommodation and to eat food they enjoy too. Sensory issues, disliked flavors, allergies, intolerances, cultural differences, religious restrictions, moral or political choices, they all deserve to be given consideration if you know you're gonna be cooking for them and to not be excluded from the fundamental right to food & access to the many important social bonding acitivities centered around food
And we deserve this without needing to be embarrassed by your exasperation or being forced to try to explain ourselves
no i will not try the food again. yes ive tried it before and did not like it. no i will not get used to the taste if i keep trying it. no just because most people like it doesnt mean i have to. i will eat the foods I know i like and stay happy with those
mini psa to anyone who needs it: if they didn't want people to order that meal, they wouldn't put it on the menu.
"but I always order the same thing every time!" is it on the menu? then they're making the same thing every day anyway, whether it's for you or someone else.
"but it's a 'childish' food like chicken tenders!" is it on the menu? can an adult order it? then clearly they expect adults to order it.
"but people might judge me for my meal choice!" it would be absurd and unreasonable to get upset when the restaurant is literally telling you, "these are the things we are capable of making and will give you in exchange for money" and you do exactly that.
I tried this yesterday. I opened it up (yes, it was cold and I shook it before opening). It looked good, and it smelled good.
But the taste? Oh my God. It tasted like someone took your chocolate milk and poured half a bottle of cold medicine in it.
Autism thing i hate that it’s considered rude to not like a food and not want to eat it. And i hate that i have to be all apologetic about it instead of people just understanding that foods just aren’t for everyone and a person not wanting to eat something isn’t an insult to anyone’s cooking
And i am sorry i can’t eat that! You put a lot of effort into something and i can’t eat it! But i’m not going to force myself to eat something that makes me want to throw up just to appease you and no i will not try it every single time to see if my opinion has changed
Still remembering that time my grandma got mad at me for not wanting to eat a thing she made even though i genuinely didn’t like it and everyone at the table made me eat it, and when i threw it back up on the plate she told me i was being dramatic - bitch you hurt me! I’m like 6 years old!
what are you supposed to do on the days that absolutely no food sounds appetizing but youre sitting there hungry and getting a headache but everything does not sound appealing
Drink something with calories (more is better). Juice, chocolate milk, whatever. Once it hits your blood stream you'll have 10-20 minutes of feeling better where you can get something more solid into your belly. This can be candy at first, but step your way up to something with protein and fats (this'll help you feel full and satisfied and keep you from having a spike/crash of energy).
Often being really hungry/having low blood sugar can make you feel nauseated and give you headaches, etc. Giving yourself a quick sugar jump will help manage those symptoms long enough to do something more lasting about it.
Be aware! You'll feel better once you get the sugar in your body but it won't last very long! You need to eat something else before it wears off again.
No bc as an autistic person it always enrages me when people claim you cant possibly know if you would like a food or not if you havent chewed it in your mouth yet. Like does food not have a sight smell or texture to yall or??????
I think the brand of chicken nuggets we get was just ruined for me
I was having some chicken nuggets with a nice little garlic parmesan sauce I made, when I notice something long and white sticking out of the nugget I'd just took a bite from. I thought it would be a hard piece of chicken or something, so I pull it out.
No. Not chicken. Not bone. A small, white feather probably the length of my pinky finger. A chicken's feather was in the meat.
And now I feel sick 🤢
Shoutout to everyone who…
Relies on ‘junk food’ to eat
Is not able to or does not have the spoons to cook regularly
Whose relationship with food was damaged by their parents
Struggles to eat fresh fruit and veg
Has a limited diet due to sensory issues
Is made fun of for their restricted diet
I wonder if a good next step to trying veggies and/or fruit would be to try them freeze dried, where they're crunchy instead of soft with surprise snaps every now and then 🤔
I like 2 new things!!!!
We went to a Steakhouse for a late Valentines family dinner. Family got Parmesan crusted Spinach dip as an appetizer. It smelled sooooo good, and I just couldn't resist trying it. And it was really good!!! The spinach pieces were pretty small, so I couldn't feel them.
I also tried ribs! My dad got a rack of them and gave me one to try, and I cleaned off the bone!!! I had to eat it with a fork and shred it up to eat it but that doesn't matter too much 💜
Two for two!!!
I had cooked a pizza for dinner last night, though I wasn't really hungry and only ended up eating one slice, then both my parents had one slice each
I was planning on eating the rest for lunch today, but when I woke up from my nap my mom told me she ate the rest of my pizza because she has the munchies
😮💨 Can't have shit in Detroit I guess
On another note, we had McDonald's last night because we had almost no food in the house. My dad usually doesn't order accommodations/adjustments to "make it easier", meaning I usually have to scrape off those tiny, gross ass onions.
I take a bite after my scraping and inspecting, and feel a crunch. I take a swig of my drink and swallow, thinking I might have missed one. Take another bite, it happens again...
I pull it apart, inspect, can't see anything. THEN, I had the idea to take apart the two patties that were on my burger...
LO AND BEHOLD. Some sick son of a bitch (/j) decided to put onions IN BETWEEN the patties. So they were on the top, on the bottom, AND in between, where all the cheese was melted.
Trust issues, mate. Smh
