Witch-Finder applying the “Witch’s Bridle.”  A most severe form of gag/torture.  Though not intended to cause death to the Witch, sometimes (though rarely) that was the end result.

As the spiked iron phallus type device was designed to be forced very deep into the woman’s/Witch’s mouth and indeed down into her throat before being locked in place, the damage done was sometimes quite severe leading to massive tearing and bleeding, and in rare and unintended cases her slow, painful death from literally drowning in her own blood and saliva.

In this image, however, I prefer to think that she will only be locked in the device for a day or two until she is ultimately released and subjected to interrogation by different methods.

Cruel, barbaric, and inhumane - absolutely.  No one can dispute the facts, but that was at the very essence of the European Witch Trials of yore.
