Authorās Note: part 3 is here !! iām so excited to keep getting these two out to you !! i love jack & skipper so much !! i canāt stop writing them !! ā¦i absolutely feel like i couldāve done more with this part but oh wellā¦comment below if thereās anything you wanna see with them !! <3
As the days go by, you find yourself spending more and more time with Jack.
The early morning coffees before your shift and after his. The breakfast sandwiches. Walks in the park when you both have a free moment. Sometimes Cove tags along. He files each moment away in that spot of his brain reserved for you for safe keeping.
Itās still beyond new, still fresh, still getting to know each other. But each time his phone lights up while heās at work if youāre working overtime with pictures of whatever animal youāre with flashing across his phone, makes his heart skip every time.
The sneaky selfies he sends you with that signature tiny corner of mouth smile of his when he gets a chance do the same to you. Surprise bouquets of flowers that showed up on your doorstep or slipped into the door handle of your car if he saw it in the parking lot before his shift. Always a hand written note slipped into with it.
It was like gravity has a hold on you, shifting and pulling you both towards each other by an invisible string. Not that either of you would complain in the slightest. No, you wanted to spend every waking moment you could together, getting to know each other in every way you could.
So when Jackās phone buzzed one night as he stood at the hub during his shift, humming softly to himselfāsomething he rarely ever didāhe was already smiling before he pulled the device fully out of his pocket.
Skipper: So you can totally say no butā¦thereās a farmerās market thing this weekend. Would you wanna go?
Jack Rabbit: Sounds perfect, sweetheart.
Skipper: Are you working tonight?
Jack Rabbit: I am. Everything ok?
Skipper: All goodā¦go save lives Dr. Abbot. x
Dana clocked him immediately. Hands on her hips as she peered over the glasses sat low on her nose at him. A look on her face that said she knew everything but still wanted an explanation.
āAnything youād like to share with the group?ā, She asks.
Jack sighs like heās on his last straw of the day despite hardly clocking in; āYouād love that wouldnāt you?ā
āYouāre hummingā¦itās cause for concern.ā
āWhat? I wasnāt-ā
āSilver Springs, Fleetwood Macā, She says it flatly, like itās obvious, like she knows something.
āHow did youā¦?ā
Dana shrugs; āYou never humā¦just taking an interest.ā
āYouāre too interested.ā
āSome would say thatās called friendshipā, Dana quips.
āMy ass.ā
Dana watches him leave, not missing the eye roll and smirk he sends her way as he disappears around the corner. It doesnāt take long for an unsuspecting Robby to walk into a newly opened trap.
āRobinavitchā, Dana calls out, making him stop in his tracks.
He looks like a kid who got caught with their hand in a cookie jar as he points to himselfāknowing heās in trouble for something by the use of his full last nameāeyebrows raised and looking around him like she could possibly mean anyone else.
āGet over here.ā
Hesitantly, he comes, setting the tablet in his hands down on the counter with so much ease it barely makes a noise, like he doesnāt want to disrupt the clearly already stirred up force.
āYes Dana, light of my life? My favorite charge Nurse?ā, Robby throws on all the flattery.
Dana laughs; āCompliments will get you nowhere.ā
Robby sighs, leaning both elbows on the counter of the hub; āA guy can tryā¦to what do I owe this pleasure?ā
Dana steps closer to him, eyeing around the ED before speaking; āWhatās up with Abbot?ā
Robby inhales; āMeaning?ā
āI donāt heās allā¦ā, She waves her hand around in the air; āPeppy and smiling at his phone like a teenager.ā
Robby snorts; āAbbot and peppy in the same sentence sounds like a crime against this hospital.ā
āHe was hummingā, Danaās lips are flat, gears turning in her head.
āOh? Thatāsā¦.newā, Robbyās eyebrows dance along his hairline.
āIām not saying itās unwelcomeā, Dana adds, āHe keeps it up people are gonna start questioning the grumpy facade heās got going on.ā
Robby shrugs once, not saying anything in a last ditch effort and with a single glimmer of hope he can still get out of this. But Dana crashes that quickly.
āSo whoās the girl?ā, She asks, smirk back on her lips.
āWhat makes you think thereās a girl?ā
āOh thereās a girl.ā
Robby blows his cheeks out, eyebrows high and in his hairline; āI donāt know what youāre talking about.ā
Dana elbows him; āCome on, Robinavitch, spillā¦Iāll give you ten bucks.ā
āOh wow, now I can quit my paper route!ā
Dana resists the urge to smack him, instead she scoots closer, smile changing to something mischievous that Robby already knows heās gonna regret.
āOk big boy, how about thisā, She makes sure heās looking at her; āSpill or iāll tell the missus you āforgotā to wear your helmet this morning.ā
Robbyās eye widen and his ears turn red, head tilted as he laughs; āYouāre punchy and mean today, Evans.ā
Dana pays him on the back once, laughing like itās the most fun sheās had all day; āMean and right between the eyes.ā
She juts her fingers out and thrusts them at his face, stopping before she touches the crease in between his brows.
Robby sighs, defeated and honestly just wanting coffee now.
āRemember the patient that came in a few weeks ago for the jellyfish sting?ā, He asks.
Dana nods; āThe one you wouldnāt stop fighting over? I remember.ā
Robby laughs with a shake of his head;
āWell she gave Jack two tickets for a tour at the aquarium. He took me and Nora with him, theyāve been talking back and forth ever since. Seen each other a few times.ā
āAnd?ā
Robby throws his hands up in surrender; āThatās it, thatās all I know.ā
Dana narrows her eyes like sheās thinking; āSo Jack and the aquarium girl, huh?ā
āSeems like it.ā
āHm.ā
āWhat?ā
Dana shakes her head; āNothing justā¦good for him.ā
Robby picks up his iPad again, patting Dana on the shoulder once; āNo betting and keep it to yourselfā¦you also didnāt hear it from me.ā
āDone deal, Robinavitch.ā
Robby walks away like a fireās been lit under his ass, wanting to be gone from whatever interrogation he walked into as fast as he could.
Dana spots Jack across the ER, shooting him a smile and a knowing nod when he looks up and meets her gaze, the look of confusion on his face more than enough to keep her entertained for a while.
When you stepped out of work that night, you already had a plan; stop at the little cafe Jack showed you for a bagel sandwich, shower and put on your comfiest pjs, and curl up on the couch with Cove.
But as you stood in line, you found yourself ordering two sandwiches instead of one, and two cups of coffee; one regular and one decaf.
You knew Jack was working tonight, and you also knew he probably hadnāt eaten. He had a habit of doing that. You ordered on autopilot, and as you left the cafe a small hint of self doubt crept up your spine.
Was it too early to bring him something? Too early to visit him at work? Itās not like you were his girlfriend or officially dating. Youād only been on a few dates, but still you felt yourself pulled towards the hospital like a magnet. It feltā¦right.
When you entered through the ER and stepped up to the check in windowāthe nurse behind the glass looked you up and downāeyebrows raised when she noticed the bag and cups in your hands; clearly unusual for someone checking in as a patient. Still, she smiled.
āWhat can I do for you, hun?ā, The nurse, whose name tag said Lupe, asked you.
Nerves suddenly crept up your spine.
āIām uhā, What should you say? Who was he to you at this point?; āIām here to see Jack Abbot.ā
Something flickered briefly across her eyes, but she didnāt ask anything else. Instead she stood and pressed a button.
āOh! Right this way, heās back here somewhereā¦ā
You let her lead you through a set of doors, ignoring the groans of patients behind you that were clearly slightly annoyed. You only felt a little bad. Lupe told you where to go, pointing down a hallway and sent you off.
Your breath caught when you entered the ED. The smell of antiseptic filling your lungs. The noise was significantly louder, lights brighter and air charged with something you couldnāt quite name. Nurses and doctors rushed by around you. Suddenly you felt very out of place.
Gripping the bag tighter in your handsāyou ventured in slowly and carefullyālike any step you took could flip this entire place on its head.
A few more nurses strolled by; one pushing an older man in a wheelchair, one with supplies in her hands. You saw a few doctors look your way, could feel their eyes on you. A sigh of relief filled your lungs when you caught sight of the big round desk area in the middle.
Dana and Lena clocked you first, the red head slipping her glasses off and nudging the blonde next to her; āSeems we have another lost little lamb upon us.ā
Dana followed her gaze, watching Lena wave you over and trying her hardest to put her finger on why you looked so familiar.
āHey kiddo, you need help?ā, Lena asked you.
You shook your head; āNo actually iām uh here to see someone. The nurse upfront said I could find him back here?ā
Lenaās already nodding; āCourse honey, are they a patient?ā
The nerves you felt suddenly tripled, lighting a fire beneath your skin; hands slightly trembling.
āNo uh, a doctor actuallyā¦Iām here to see Dr. Abbot, uh, Jack?ā, The waver of nerves in your voice made you want to smack yourself in the forehead.
Realization settled quickly on Danaās face, but she didnāt say anything, not yet.
Lena exchanged a glance with the fellow charge nurse, both of them quickly returning to moving after pausing at the name that left your mouth.
āOh, sure! Heās around here somewhereā¦let me see if I can find himā, Lena says, patting your arm gently as she slips by.
You can feel Danaās gaze on you, rocking on your feet as you look at everything around you.
āHowās your arm?ā, Dana finally says.
āI-what? Oh! All good!ā, You say, holding up your arm.
She nods, letting a careful silence drift between you before she speaks again; āHe really likes you, ya know.ā
You can feel the blush on your neck and cheeks, smiling wide as you whip your head up to look at her; āYeah?ā
Dana laughs softly; āWhatever youāre doing, hon, keep doing. You make him very happy.ā
You open your mouth to respond, but get cut off by a familiar voice in the distance;
āSir, we will get you some more pain meds. But right now, I need you to shut your fucking mouth!ā
Oh. Thatās aā¦.different side of Jack.
All you see is the quick blur of black scrubs, and the back of his head; greying curls slightly messy as he disappears into a trauma room.
Your head whips around towards the charge nurse beside you; āWas thatā¦?ā
She nods, already laughing because of course youād be here for that; āOne of the reasons our patient satisfaction scores are so low?ā¦He likes to grumble when heās not hovering.ā
You have to hold back a laugh.
But deep in your mind, something about the way the words left his mouth had the blush on your skin turning to a shade that was almost crimson.
Time passes differently in the ED youāve noticed, you donāt know how long youāve been standing at the hub talking to Dana when Jack finally makes his way over.
His face is tired at first, almost grumpy as he frowns, lines on his face more prominentācountless years of experience and work etched in his skin.
The first thing you see is worry and fear flash through his tired hazel eyesāgaze flicking up and down your figureāchecking you over for anything wrong or out of place.
His shoulders relax a bit when he finds nothing.
āSkip, whatāre you doing here? Everything ok?ā, You notice the gravel in his voice immediately.
āEverythingās fine Jack, I promiseā, You say softly, but the hand he has on your arm doesnāt move; āJust heading home from work and thought iād bring you something to eat.ā
His face softensāboylike features peaking through.
āYouā¦brought me food?ā, He asks softly, eyeing the bag in your hands.
āAnd a coffeeā, You shrug; āI know you forget to eat sometimes.ā
He doesnāt know what to say to that, you notice. So instead he leans in carefully, pressing a soft kiss to your temple that has his ears turning pink when he realizes Dana is still watching.
āThank youā, He says, eyes on nothing but you.
He turns back to Dana after a moment; āHey, do you mind-ā
āGoā, She says, waving her hand, a soft smile already blooming; āIāll hold the fort down.ā
āFifteen minutes, I promise!ā, He calls out, guiding you by your elbow to the break room.
It looks just as sterile as everything else you noteābut thereās a couch in the corner and a round table with chairs in the middle; a coffee station set up on one counter.
You set the bag and coffees down on the table, spinning around towards Jack but heās already on you.
Arms around your waist and pulling you in close with a kiss to your hairline and a hand on the side of your head.
āThank you, I needed this.ā
Your fingers scrape his scalp; āOf course, Jack.ā
You let him just be for a moment.
āI brought you a sandwich.ā
He pulls back, eyebrows raised; āFrom the corner place?ā
āMhmā, You nod, āand a coffee, large.ā
He squeezes your hand; āGod thatāsā¦yeah.ā
You watch him pull out his sandwich, the sigh that leaves his nose as he takes the first biteāshoulders falling about two inches and his eyes closing as his tongue pokes out to lick his lips.
āThis is perfect, Skipper, thank you.ā
You sit across from him, unwrapping your own sandwich as you smile back at him; āIām glad I could help.ā
That makes him fall serious for a moment, hand over yours across the table as he dips his head slightly to catch your eye.
āHeyā, He says softly; āI mean it, really. Tonightās beenā¦ā
He trails off, but you know what he means.
āāShut your fucking mouthā, busy?ā, You quip, smile failing to be held back.
He groans, ears red again and head falling back; āYou heard that?ā
āHeard it, saw it, filed it away for later. Your pick.ā
He shakes his head; āYouāre still trouble.ā
āā¦You ok?ā, You ask him softly, not wanting to overstep.
He nods once; āYeah, Iām good.ā
Though by the way his shoulders tense, youāre not sure you fully believe him.
You finish eating in silence, watching him stretch out his back and arms above his headābiceps bulging as his shirt rides up a littleāthe bottom of his stomach to just above his navel peeking out. So strong and perfect. He checks his watch and sighs.
āI should probably get back to work before Dana has my headā, He says, voice soft like he doesnāt want to go.
But he stands anyways, arms wrapping around your waist again, lingering there with you. His cologne encompassing you.
āYou sure youāre ok?ā, You murmur, fingers at his nape.
Heās nodding again; āIām ok, Skipper.ā
He pauses to tuck a strand behind your ear. Looking at you like every fiber in his being once to kiss you right here and now, but he stops himself.
āIāll see you this weekend, yeah?ā, He says softly.
You pull back, cupping his cheek; āOf course.ā
Then his lips hover on your forehead, skin warm and grounding, before he finally steps away and back out into the business of the ED.
āGo save lives!ā, You call after him, the small smirk he sends back your way more than enough to have you blushing.
The knocking at your door comes early, way too early. The bedside clock reads 7:30, the sun outside golden as it just starts to settle into daytime.
You shuffle out of bed and to your feet, your shirt hanging loosely off your shoulders and covering your sleep shorts. Thereās silence through your apartment before the knocking comes again. Itās not rushedājust steadyāheavy and intentional.
In your sleep filled haze you donāt bother to look through the peephole, when you open the door the person on the other side makes you freeze.
āJack?ā
Jack stands thereāstill in his scrubs with his bag slung over his shoulderāhair disheveled and his scruff looking even darker than it had the previous night. His eyes look sad and solemn and his frown is deeper.
Heād come straight from work.
You feel your chest and heart twinge.
āSorry, I justādidnāt know where else to goā, He says softly, voice almost shaking.
You pull him inside gently, shutting the door and peeling the bag off his shoulder, letting him pull you close after he hesitates for a moment; like heās unsure if heās allowed to touch you.
His chin hides in the crook of your neck, breath warm against your skin and he breathes shakily into you, his back arched to crouch down more to your height.
āHey, heyā¦whatās wrong?ā, You ask.
You were worried to say the least. He was always so strong and level-headed, but here was; crumbling in front of you. Still smelling faintly of antiseptic and sweat.
There had been a lingering feeling in your chest when you left him earlier, that he wasnāt quite altogether like heād said he was; and now here he was, proving the feeling right.
You pull his head back carefully, forcing him to look at you; āShitty shift?ā
He only nods, eyes glassy and biting his lip like heās trying to keep it from wavering.
āItās ok, iām here, iāve got youā, You tell him.
āMāSorryā¦for waking you. I know you have to work and I donāt want you to feel like thatās not important-ā
You donāt remind him youāre off today, not now.
āJackā, You say once, āStop that. Itās ok, Iām glad youāre here.ā
You realize now you mean more than just in this moment, and surprisingly; he catches that meaning in your voice too.
You see the moment he freezes as you dip your head to lean it against hisābut heās moving quickly againādipping his own head to catch your lips against his. The kiss is slow and tentative; warm and unrushed. Like heād rather be here than anywhere else.
The amount of times youād kissed was still able to be counted on one hand, but each once was more special and passionate than the last. Still learning each other; still growing closer and comfortable.
Each kiss lit both of you up inside like a warm sunny dayāthe feeling of the ocean tide and breeze almost within reach.
He pulls back slowly, eyes staying close as he savors it, before heās looking softly down at you again.
āWas thatā¦ā, He swallows carefully, āWas that ok?ā
You can only nod, all words ripped from your mind except for one; Jack.
You find yourself playing with his sweaty curls again; āDo you want to talk about it?ā
āNot right nowā, He shakes his head, and then; āā¦Do you mind if I use your shower?ā
Youād find out later about the patientās heād lost. The dad who came in without his son, only to find he passed on route. The older couple who both passed within an hour of each other after coding for almost twoādrunk driver responsible.
The child with pneumonia whose lips were purple and face almost blue as he was rushed up to the ICU. They all echoed in Jackās headāpart of the curse that came with the job. One of the reasons he gravitated towards the roof on certain nights. Though those had become less frequent since heād met you.
āNot at all, second door on the rightā¦you hungry?ā
He shrugs; āA little.ā
āIāll order us some food, go get clean.ā
You watch him head back the hallway, bag in hand and a slight limp to his gait thatās way worse than it was earlier.
Forty-five minutes later youāre unpacking the food that just arrived when he steps back out from the hallway again.
Grey sweats that match his hair hanging low on his hips, his torso still speckled with water droplets in between the freckles, lightening curls that are still damp and dark from the water.
āOh Jackā¦ā, You say, softness dripping from your voice; āYou look so tired, baby.ā
The nickname slips out, but neither of you react.
He sighs like he knows how he looksāhow he feels on his feetāheavy and ignoring the burn of his nerve endings and the way his prosthetic is rubbing. His eyes are darker with exhaustion, both in the iris and the bags below them; purple marking them there. Hair sticking up and muscles flexing.
You find him in front of you again, hands gently roaming his shoulders; āShower ok?ā
āYeah, definitely needed, thank youā, He says.
āSorry I donāt have a chairā¦I donāt know if thatās good or bad-ā
āIt all worked out, donāt worry about me, sweetheartā, Almost waving his hand.
āJackā, You say sternly, āOf course I worry about you, youāre important to me.ā
He freezes, then leans in to engulf you in his arms again, tears pricking his eyes, but this time he doesnāt really bother to try and hide them as much. Mental and physical exhaustion breaking the dam.
Heās kissing you softly again when you look up at him, lips clashing and roaming with a little more passion than before, but still soft and tentative.
āFood is hereā, You whisper.
He grunts softly in response; āGood, Iām starving.ā
You smile at his change in appetite, the shower helping wake him up a little.
Youāre still cradling his face when he pulls away, eyes raking over him in a way that makes him feel shy and want to pull away, but he doesnāt.
āYouāre so beautiful, Jack.ā
His breath hitched audibly; āDonāt.ā
He pinches his eyes shut, but you donāt let him.
āYou are, youāre so beautifulā, You say, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
His eyes stay closed as you pepper kisses across his face with each compliment.
āYouāre so smartā; a kiss to his other cheek.
āSo strong and muscularā; a kiss to his forehead.
āSo kind and caring and thoughtfulā; a kiss to his temple.
āSo good at your job and with patientsā; a kiss to his nose.
Then your lips hover over his; āSo gentle and caring and good to me.ā
Your lips press against his, kiss deepening as his arms tighten around your waist, lifting you into the air as your legs wrap around his waist; food long forgotten for now.
Jack pulls you down ontop of him on your couch, lying sprawled out with you on his chestāsoft kisses still peppering his lips and faceāholding you together. Thereās no place youād rather be. Finally his chin ends up on your head, lips and nose brushing your hair as you snuggle into his bare chest; fingers playing with the greying hair.
āThank youā, His voice comes scratchy; āFor answeringā¦for letting me inā¦for being here.ā
You tilt your head up; āIāll always be here, Jack.ā
He presses a kiss to your lips again, sighing more in content now than exhaustion. His eyes growing heavier by the minute. He doesnāt say anything elseājust pulls you closer again and lets his breath brush your hair.
He realizes right then heās truly, truly screwed.
You were opening up something inside him that he didnāt know was there anymore.
But now? Maybe heās not as scared of that anymore.

Authorās Note: FYI, if you havenāt been following along closely since chapter 2, I had the OC be Indian/a brown girlā Just because I felt like we donāt get enough representation. So if you donāt like that, I guess just either live with it, or blur that piece of information out as you go. Also: did I use some random ass generator wheel for some of the super specific information? Yes. Will I change it? Probably not. Did I check if that kinda stuff was even possible? ā¦Mayhaps.
When you finally make it into the restaurant and sit down to order, you immediately spot multiple people, mostly young women, pulling out their phones, trying to (not so) discreetly take photos and videos of the two of you. You could just imagine the headlines and hashtags trending the next day.
Charles is immune to this by now and smiles and waves at some of the phones, and ignores the majority of the others.Ā
Biting your lip, you scan through the menu. āCharles?ā
āHmm?ā
āWould you mind recommending me something? Iāve never been here beforeā.
āAh, no. My family and I eat everything, so no worriesā.
He orders a Tourte de Blettes for you and a Pissaladiere for himself.
āSo. Tell me more about yourself.ā
Not knowing how to go about this, you think for a while. āWell, Iām Indian, but I was born in Singapore, and brought up in Americaā. You count off a finger. āI was certified to be a music producer at a very young age, sometime in secondary school and I have a degree in forensic science. I really love singing, but usually only in my free time. I've actually been working at a producing studio hereā. You scrunch your brows trying to recall any interesting details about yourself. āUm, Iām also a dance choreographer for a lot of Korean idol groups and produce music for them too, so I go over there from time to time⦠I donāt know. What exactly do you want to know?ā
When you meet Charlesās eyes again, heās looking at you with an adoring expression on his face. āYouāre so cute, like a little angel. Mon angeā (My angel).
You blush in embarrassment. He asks you more about why you chose your major and what itās like working with idols while you wait for your meals. āIād love to hear you sing sometimeā.
Just then, the waiter comes with your dishes. Whew, saved by the food! The aromas wafting off the delicious looking dishes are absolutely mouth watering, as if the sights werenāt enough. You begin to split your food in half, and he asks what youāre doing. āOh- well, my family and I always split our meals equally to try everything, Sorry, I did that out of habitā I can take the piece backāā
āI think I quite like that idea. Hereā, He splits his meal and gives it to you as well.Ā
ā¦
After dinner, the two of you decide to split the bill, because you were unwilling to let Charles pay in full, regardless of whether or not he earned more than you.Ā
As you walk back home, hand-in-hand and discussing common interests, you find yourself leaning your head on his arm, and later, with his arm around your shoulder.Ā
When you reach the door to your apartment, he turns to you and moves a strand of hair out of your face. āI liked getting to know you tonight, and I hope you will give me the chance to take you out againā. You make a sound of agreement. Knowing that you arenāt quite ready to have your first kiss yet, you pull him down slightly and get on your tiptoes, kissing his cheek. He smiles and kisses the crown of your head in return, and then ushers you into your home.Ā
When he leaves, you send him a text. Thank you for the best first date ever.
