Prompt 8

I searched the hashtag picturebooks on Pinterest. In comparison to last weeks tumblr search, I found that many of the results on pinterest were in regards to box sets, where to buy things and possibly lessons or activities to go with these picture books. The results on tumblr were much more individual, and showcased lots of books I hadn’t heard of, as well as showcasing aspiring illustrators art pieces and cartoon characters. It also had a publicity side to it, sharing book launches and such, where as pinterest focuses more on ideas and inspiration.

Prompt 7

In the #picturebooks hashtag, I found many books I have never heard of before. I wrote a selection of them down to explore further at a later date and continued looking. One that I was most interested in was “The Bear and the Piano” in which a bear finds a piano in the woods. I enjoy music a lot and play in my spare time so I was particularly drawn to this book.

As well as picture books I found book swaps and book launches in cities around the world. I will definitely come back to tumblr in search of books in the future.

Prompt 6

Frontloading Activity:

Watch the video. In a group of 3, see how many Warrgamay words you can use in a conversation. See if you can create a play with a story using the Warrgamay words you have learnt.

Prompt 5

Wordle: Transparent strength has died in the silence of the hollow, cold night, no food in sight.

Dust: The world forgets us, feeding their bins instead.

Frontloading: I would use an activity called “What Matters Most”. This involves students creating a list of things they find most important in life. Students will write the list and place it in an envelope. At the commencement of learning about Dust, students would write their list again, and compare the two.Maybe after learning about the background behind Dust, they will have a different list.

Week One Reflection

Reading was something I loved to do from a very young age. My parents instilled a love for reading from the moment I could sit still and listen. Bed time stories were a necessity and often I would continue looking at the pictures in secret when I was supposed to be sleeping. When I begun reading at school I remember reading to everyone in my family, including my older brother and grandparents. I remember one Christmas morning my brother came into my room at 6.30 and said “Mum and Dad wont let us get up until 7, so lets read a story”. That morning we read The Cat in the Hat until we were allowed to go and wake up our parents. 

Because I enjoyed reading so much, I did it any chance I got, and enjoyed any class time where we would sit and listen to a book being read, or sit quietly reading. My favourite time was when we got to listen to the big book. One book in particular that I remember reading as a big book was called Ten Monster Islands. I liked the colours and illustrations, as well as the twist at the end of the book where all of the monsters turn on the main man who wants to kill them and use them for decorations.

As I became older and entered high school, i became frustrated with the books we were forced to read before class, as I was not particularly interested in most of them, and I felt that picking them apart caused me to lose all feeling around my favourite characters and chapters of the book. 

I believe that to engage students in reading, the need to read things they are going to enjoy. Not all the time, but at least sometimes. I found a love in sharing my books and why they were so good with many of my friends as well as my teachers at school, and found many of my favourite books from suggestions from my friends.
