both of these are true and both deserve love and to be able to be accepted and get proper healthcare

Completely agree and would just like to add a little extra nuance: there's also fat people who eat healthy and/or exercise and aren't healthy. And fat people with non ideal health habits that are healthy. Just like in every other demographic. Since individual choices play a smaller role in health outcomes than we'd like to think.

And all deserve decency and respect and proper healthcare.

I'm in a little local cafe and the women behind the counter started griping to each other, "Oh Christ, Stephen's back again," "It's him, is it? I thought he'd stopped coming," "It's definitely him, look, it's bloody Stephen on a Thursday morning," "Do you want me to get rid of him or are you going to do it?" and so I was peering outside, trying to spot this nightmare customer, this pestilence of a person, this pox upon the cafe trade, and then one of the women from behind the counter ran outside, clapping two trays together loudly and yelling "GET OUT OF IT, STEPHEN!" and it turns out that Stephen is an absolutely gigantic fuck-off seagull who hangs around outside, menacing people for crumbs

crap, i don't know enough dance terminology to make this coherent, but the way they've been utilizing going en pointe in act 2 is fascinating. like, aside from when they're doing turns and stuff like that, all the women are walking around on the flat part like regular people. but then dracula bursts in and everyone is down in the dark except lucy, who is now on her tippy toes and basically floating across the floor to him in a trance and the contrast is so eerie

also, repeated theme the way dracula just kind of flings them around at times, like they're not dance partners but just toys to be played with and literally tossed aside. in the jonathan one he just like yote him 15 feet or something crazy across the stage, and in this one he's just positioning her like a ragdoll, the choreo is so good

star trek explores these strange seemingly inconsequential extremes because it wants you to consider the possibility that your concept of ethics doesnt and could never possibly account for every scenario. It wants you to consider the ethical ramifications of just wiping out the little nanites taking over your ships computer even though eventually this will kill you all becuase

-What if they’re alive?

-What if they’re sentient?

-What if they don’t realize they’re hurting us?

-What if what hurts us is what they need to live?

-What if we can communicate with them?

Star Trek takes the situation of, “these computer bugs are eating our ship and in an hour we’ll all be dead and we COULD just wipe them out utterly but…what if they’re like us?” because the ramifications effect what risks we ourselves are willing to take in the name of pacifism and understanding. it says that even the smallest most immenently dangerous creature deserves as much of a chance to live peacefully as we can possibly give it through understanding.

without examining ourselves this way, through these made up seemingly inane situations, we will never be able to understand ourselves and what we’re truly capable of, what levels of understanding can be achieved. without the ability to place ourselves in a difficult situation and reach beyond our first instinct of fight or flight and self-preservation, we will never be evolve as a global community

Realized my main beef with the Star Trek Prime Directive aside from me believing minimizing suffering should be our main goal BUT ALSO it honestly kinda assumes that "primative" people exist? Like you could time travel back to caveman times and take a baby and bring it back and it would be perfectly fine(once vaccinated) and have no trouble "adjusting" to modern times. It just feels like it reinforces the flawed idea that ancient humans were literally less sapient than modern ones. Almost feels like an overcorrection of colonialism, this idea that we need to leave "primative" (which is problematic in of itself) to develop on their own, as if the issue was contact and not how the contact happened. And we know when shown more modern tech that can genuinely improve your life most humans line up for it as fast as possible, shown in how europeans switched to native made cloth armour because it was better. Native people and Europe could have had normal trade relationships (minus the disease but I'd argue that was inevitable unless we somehow made it to the invention of vaccines before making contact with Indigenous Americans and that was never going to happen and also there was cultural exchange before Columbus that didn't lead to disease) and perfectly fine cultural exchange if Europeans had decided to be fucking normal, and crucially, THE FEDERATION IS NOT GONNA KILL EVERYONE OR COLONIZE THEIR PLANETS IT'S JUST CULTURAL AND SCIENTIFIC EXCHANGE JESUS FUCK!!!

And how do you know Federation culture would overshadow the alien's actual cultural growth. Do you know what kind of cultural growth can happen when a people's needs are met? Come the entire fuck on they'd be fucking fine. Most would probably quite happy to no longer die of preventable diseases and never have to worry where their next meal is coming from. It's like how people assume wild animals can never be happy in captivity when actually they like captivity so much we have to work to make sure we don't domesticate them by accident. And I doubt the Federation would force contact rather than offer it and respect the people's decision regarding it as they've legit done that before!!!! They would probably make huge contributions if they joined as well, as this ALSO assumes no civilization that hasn't discovered transwarp travel has anything to offer the Federation when that's not true!! Those are people full of new perspectives and ideas, we'd benefit from making contact as much as they would!!!! This shit makes no sense!!!! Plus not all societies travel through the tech tree like it's Civ, what if they're incredibly advanced but don't prioritize space travel?? This shit makes no sense!!

I know that wasn't the intention but it's absolutely how it manifests. You wanna let these societies make their own decisions, but you never even give them a choice in if you help them or not. You assume they have nothing to offer, that they're too stupid to adjust to a great leap in technological advancement. It's so ridiculous, they really didn't think the concept through.
