REALLY respect The Pitt for how they tackled T1D, especially insulin rationing.
When Diaz mentioned his need to ration insulin, saying something like “I take half my prescribed medication daily”, that indicated (to me, after 9 years with T1D) that he doesn’t use standard carb ratios. He’s probably taking a fixed amount of either U-200, a more concentrated form of insulin good for heavier patients, or 70/30, a blend of short and long acting insulin that tends to turn out a bit cheaper than either kind on its own.
Instead of picking a generic IC/correction factor plan, The Pitt took the time to think about what treatment would make sense for him, given his socioeconomic status, weight, career, and more. It made him a person. Implicitly and explicitly, they developed his feelings about this chronic illness, how it’s impacted his livelihood.
Through his confusion and short bout of anger, it showed us the mental and emotional toll of prolonged hyperglycemia/DKA. It showed us his unwillingness to burden his family with additional costs, even at the cost of his life. It treated Diaz as a modern diabetic and an actual human being, not an antiquated emblem of this disease.
I just can’t believe we’re seeing a storyline about insulin rationing on a major TV program. As medical costs continue to skyrocket and economic disparities widen, an estimated 25 - 35% of diabetics ration our meds. That number is even higher among the uninsured. It’s such a scary, visceral, and real part of T1D. I mean, diabetics regularly talk, online and in person, about how best to stretch the rest of a vial through the week. It’s a terrifyingly normal topic of conversation for us. We deal when we can’t. We try our best to live when our bodies cannot carry out basic processes. And that is ten times harder for those of us below the poverty line or those like Diaz, “stuck in the middle”. And ten times harder than that for people of color, who already deal with increased medical doubt and lack of access.
I don’t know. It meant a lot to see on the TV tonight. Thank you, The Pitt. Thank you, Orlando Diaz.

One of life's great ironies is that almost everyone who makes the active decision to not have kids would probably be way better at raising a child than all the people who just kind of have children because it's what they think everyone is supposed to do
Like genuinely if you're like "I don't want kids because of the financial strain/the commitment/the irritation I would feel/the possibility of traumatizing them/whatever reason" you instantly demonstrate to me that you 1) understand the realities of parenthood and 2) believe that children should be treated with at least a base level of respect and compassion. Meanwhile everyone who's like "I want kids because I don't want to be alone" "I can't wait to dress up my babies" "I won't raise my children to be soft" may as well be talking about Neopets for all the fucks they seem to give about kids
