ariel was excited when princess rapunzel asked if she would sit for portrait, but is more excited to see it after a never-ending series of “are you done?”, each time followed by “not yet.”
tired, she starts to talk about her grandmother - she is kind, but she is also strict. ariel recalls her fifteenth year, and explains how it is a coming-of-age. she can still feel her grandmother long fingers twisting white lilies into her hair and attaching oysters to her tail, even against her protests, (though, she does not mention the latter.)
another hour passes before she reluctantly asks (yet again) and rapunzel, after a moment of rambling, says yes! so she leaps from her seat and scrambles to the easel.
“oh my gosh!” ariel exclaims. her fingers brush across the flowers twisted in panting ariel’s hair, smudging the paint - but instead of white, the colour pink streaks the portrait and stains her fingers. pink peonies with touches of yellow. “this is the most wonderful thing anyone’s ever done for me.”

she can’t meet his eyes as he hands her a rose - she looks away, then looks back and he’s staring at her so she shuts her eyes. ariel counts, one… two…, and before she can reach three, he places a kiss on her forehead. “if you get any of your gross ‘’’’chapstick‘’’’ on me i’m sending the regiment after you! they’ll make you join!” she says, finally snatching the flower from him. and softer, “thanks, though.”

The royal menagerie is normally very quiet during this time of day, so Char is surprised to come across another person while enjoying poorly imitating the parrots and their various languages. “Do you live here in Frell, milady?” Char thought himself at least somewhat familiar with the people who lived so close to the castle. But he had never seen this face before, and wondered where she might be from.
“your highness,” she says, dropping to a low curtsy upon his arrival. “it’s lovely to meet you, prince charmont. your kingdom is really lovely.”
frell became her ideal destination when she caught word of the magical creatures who live within its borders. though rumors of fairies drift from lips to lips in the previous places she’s travelled, they are often kept secret by those who have the pleasure of knowing. in frell, however, they are a known power and she would like one to teach her magic!
“my home is a small village on the coast of denmark,” she explains, “and i wondering if i could borrow your assistance for a moment.”

Attina hates the look that crosses her sister’s features, and she frowns in response herself. “Well – no, I don’t see anything like that. But I’m sure it’s very lovely.” She’s reassuring in her tone, almost too much so, but she hardly realizes it. She wants to know more about what Ariel is seeing, though, and presses for further information. “What sorts of colors do you see?”
“no,” ariel pouts. she does not wish to share her colours. instead, she reenters the water with a pop, not checking to see if her older sister was behind her. she is silent all the way back to the palace. when her father asks how their outing went, she is polite, simply explaining that they visited a grove and that it was nice before continuing to her room.

the queen’s walks near the fjord were an attempt to being to ease her fear of the ocean planted deep after THE SEA CLAIMED HER PARENTS . still , she expected to perhaps find a colorful rock she could bring back for her sister … not a naked girl on the shore . ❛ are you alright ? ❜ she asks , hurrying over & mentally berating herself for not bringing a guard with her .
ATLANTIQUEEN / starter call !
regret fills her tiny body the moment she sets sail - she doesn’t know how to sail in the first place (she thought she could handle it) and to make maters worse, a storm starts to settle around her. the sea king’s anger makes him blind to all. everything withers away if it’s in his path, including his youngest daughter who has become one of those creatures he seems to hate. without a moment’s notice, her boat capsizes, and the little mermaid is being pulled under by the most violent of waves. as human, she cannot breathe or survive underwater. with bleary vision, she takes hold of her necklace, and tries to will her tail to take form without a songspell. her magic will not hold. slowly, her light fades out.
when she wakes again, it is in the arms of another. she blinks once, twice, then falls again. ariel can hear the faintest of voices and she follows - it pulls her out of dark, into the cloudy skies where she washed ashore. “i’m fine,” she exhales. “i didn’t think i’d survive, actually.” and if she did die, it would not have been a painful death - the water would have welcomed her, dissolving her form into seafoam.
she attempts to stand but her legs are weak - she stumbles forward much like her first attempt at walking on legs. with help from the other girl, she manages to walk but the rocks hurt her so.

“But dying’s part of the wheel, right there next to being born.” It might have seemed odd, the way their conversation had deepened so quickly into matters such as life and death, but it was quite easy to let her mouth run away from her when she was not surrounded by bothersome aunts and history books and the drab stone walls of the cottage. It is just she and the other girl in a meadow dotted with wildflowers, honeybees giving the air a pleasant buzzing sound. Aurora’s thoughts wander to her mother, who had completed her wheel in an effort to bring her child into the world, and questions if that is simply the way of things. “You can’t pick out the pieces you like and leave the rest.”
“i’m not saying that people don’t die - they do but their souls are immortal,” she says, veering to what her grandmother taught her. “so when they die, they still have much to do.” aurelia is not like them. she was born from the sea, and when she dies, she must do so by the sea, where her body may turn to seafoam - that is her wheel. still, she enjoys her time away from the sea, away from her home. “and i think that you do get to pick the pieces. pick your life, make it yours, instead of living someone else’s.”

“I’ve heard much about ATLANTICA. Is it true a lot of the folk here haven’t ever seen a human before?”
“my daddy - he’s the king - says that the humans are dangerous but i don’t believe him! he hasn’t been to the surface in years. i guess it’s true to an extent.” she says. “but they still let us see the surface starting when we’re fifteen, so that’s some consolation.”

His eyebrow lifts at her response, and he gets the distinct feeling that she was not entirely present in the conversation. “Right,” he replies, brushing off their previous interaction with ease. “So is this your first time in a pub?” If so, she was lucky that, although unruly amongst themselves, the frequenters of this establishment were generally kind towards newcomers and strangers.
okay, so maybe that wasn’t the right response - no worries! she closes her, willing the ringing to go away (it doesn’t.) with focus, she hears his next question and nods along to his words. “i’ve walked past a few of them, but this is my first time. i’ve had a few of those,” she says, pointing to his drink and making a face. “it’s bitter!”

“I—” He is cold isn’t he? Is he cold? –he was ne’er cold before. He blinks, stunned. “Ah, yea!” He follows after her.
“That would lovely, truthfully. I am Roland,” he introduces; for that is his Way, his offering. “Whom art thou?” He nearly asks ‘art thou human?’, but deems it nigh appropriate for a first meeting in solitude. He simply walks beside her, great and loping.
she spins in a circle - and to her, it almost feels like time is slowing. whimsy fills her lungs and she laughs. “i’m aurelia,” she tries, unsure of whether or not it came out muddled. “i love to dance and i love the moon. it’s nice to meet you, roland, as it’s nice to have a companion! do you enjoy adventures?”
“I’m well enough acquainted with you to know that I cannot alarm you even should I wish it.”

he stands tall beside her, proud in his dress. they are among the royal court - he is visiting an old companion and she couldn’t help but tag along. upon hearing his voice, she glances upwards towards her companion - her friend. he wears a grin, and she think she prefers his smoulder (at least it does not make her laugh during formal occasion!)
she bows her head forward, suppressing a laugh. “that is true, i’ve grown quite fearless towards you.”

❛ sounds like you’re an expert. coulda been a real one, who knows. ❜
arielle throws her hands in the air, giving a complacent shrug. “who knows!” she echoes. “they’re fishtales, but maybe there is an air of truth.” she passes him a smile before turning back to the glass doors. “let me know if you find one - i have to get back to my public!”

❛ y’think you’ve seen it all and then : mermaids— ❜
@atlantiqueen !
“you saw a mermaid? i hate to break it to you, but it was probably someone wearing a fake tail.”

“I think I’ll wait and see for myself before I start thanking you.” Orange fins flick at double the pace in an effort to keep up with her sister (without a constant pulling at her shoulder). Luckily, their destination seems reasonably close, and Attina is glad for it. All the easier to return home if needed.
She situates herself on an adjacent rock and waits as Ariel asks. She has to admit that the warm breeze feels lovely on her skin, and the surrounding wildlife is a special kind of beautiful. Still, there doesn’t seem to be anything… outstanding about this little spot. The mermaid, with a glance at the redhead, feels as if she is missing out on some large and critical piece of information. “Er – what am I waiting for, exactly?”
the colours stop, dropping from the air like falling stars. and they crash to the ground, breaking into a million pieces of starlight. blue eyes dart towards her sister, who stares confused. “you don’t see it?” she asks, a pout melting onto her lips. “there are colours. everywhere. and they sparkle and dance along with the sounds! have you never seen it?” she hopes that her sister’s joking (but since when does attina make jokes, let alone understand them!) she wants to runaway, to hide, to sink into the depts of the ocean.

Her arm lifted to shield her eyes from the blinding morning sun, and Attina turned toward her youngest sister. “Remind me again why we’re visiting the surface?” The mermaid felt exposed so close to where humans were known to dwell, so far away from the safety of the castle beneath the waves. “I should hope this is something very important to warrant your vague insistence.” Skeptical as she made herself sound aloud (for it only seemed right, as the oldest, to be constantly questioning of her sisters), Attina truly did trust her sister and knew she would not wittingly place either of them in harm’s way.
ariel continues to pull her sister by the arm, urging her to go faster! “vague? it’s called a surprise, attina!” she says. “the surface isn’t even scary or dangerous, aaaand, you’re gonna thank me a thousand times over. start now if you like.”
she leads her sister to her sitting place - a small grove beneath a human village. she perches herself on one of the rocks, swinging her fins up and down along with the water. “wait for it -” she says. it’s slow at first, a chorus of birds creating their verses as they wake, and soon, the rustles of feet scraping against gravel roads begin their rhythmic addition to the song when suddenly it explodes! ariel is grinning from cheek to cheek as she closes her eyes, listening to the world of humans come to life! like supernovas, colours start to burst in front of her! “do you see it? isn’t it amazing?”
