Keep up with me on the wonderful music blog One Week One Band starting tomorrow. I'll be going long on one of my favorite bands, The Clientele.
That’s it, folks! Tomorrow is our last show. Our academic quarter is about to end, and since DJ Ari$ha is graduating (weep!) tomorrow is probably the last time we’re going to be hosting Radio PU$$Y P0PPIN.
It’s been an incredible experience. I was driving up the 101, listening to 106.1 (the Bay Area’s best hip hop station) and came to realize that after two hours of airplay, only one female artist was played (Nicki Minaj, of course). I knew that there is some extraordinary female talent out there and briefly entertained the idea of hosting a radio station playing exclusively female hip-hop and rap artists.
I approached DJ Ari$ha with the idea, and I was ecstatic when she agreed to be my co-DJ, since she’s the most knowledgeable music junkie I know. And ever since, it’s been a blast. There’s nothing more rewarding than celebrating the success and talents of your fellow females. I hope we’ve exposed you to some of the great artistry out there, and we’d like to thank our followers for their support.
Here’s some of the good stuff to listen to before tomorrow evening. We’d really love for you to tune in (6:00 p.m. Pacific) and join us for our last hurrah.

“PU$$Y P0PPIN” is the name of a radio show on KSDT that I’m co-hosting with my friend Mina. We go by the names DJ Minamator and DJ Ari$ha, and play nothing but female hip hop from 4 to 5 p.m. every Friday.
Mina approached me with the idea for the show over winter break, and I couldn’t resist immediately making a sprawling Spotify playlist of lady MCs and agreeing to the gig. Since then, I’ve discovered more incredible artists than I could have possibly imagined. Last week’s theme of “up and comers” and this week’s theme of “female rappers from around the world,” forced me to delve deep into the pockets of the Internet to pull out women that I probably wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise.
I see plenty of people who claim to be fans of rap who don’t listen to a single female, and those that do often pit them against each other, sexualize them or treat them like a gimmick. Let the following artists be a taste of what female rappers really have to offer, and listen to PU$$Y P0PPIN every Friday for even more girl power.
In which I discuss Kitty Pryde, the plethora of great female rappers from the UK and Iran's Salome MC.
This excerpt sums up why I adore Kitty Pryde:
“But who speaks for teenage girls? Who tells the terrors of deciphering text messages from crushes, navigating sexual behavior and finding self-esteem in a world increasingly riddled with negative, harmful messages? Kitty once described her songs as diary entries, and they sound very much like confessionals. Her vocal curlicues feel like the doodles of a teenage girl’s handwriting, while her level of honesty is at times almost an affront to the unexpecting ear. But her rhymes are clever and original, and her songwriting is clear and concise even when centered on troubling topics. The production on D.A.I.S.Y. rage feels like a mix of floral frippery and some sort of concentrated hate. It’s the best of two diametrically oppositional themes. It’s easy to see why older (and let’s keep it real, mostly male) critics are at odds with Kitty’s music. Many of them are rap traditionalists, and her music relates an experience they will never understand. Plus the flippancy with which she creates her musical pastiche upsets those with purist roots, because to them, hip-hop is still, well, hip-hop.”

Here’s a personal favorite from our old school-themed show today. The fact that most people don’t know who Da Brat is anymore, even though she was the first solo female rapper to have a platinum-selling album, is seriously upsetting to me, and totally indicative of how people perceive women in the hip hop world. Da Brat has some serious Snoop Dogg flow on this track, but way less recognition for it. Give her a listen, y’all!

They say our generation is a fickle one, committed to the use of irony as a defense mechanism above all else. The hipster archetype haunts us like grunge haunted the ’90s or punk haunted the ’80s, only the youth of those decades grew into the crusty elder statesmen of the new millennium, deeming our mustaches and sarcasm and fixed-gear bicycles as chronically indifferent by comparison.
To say, as Christy Wampole did in the now infamous New York Times editorial, “How to Live Without Irony,” that we are “students of cool” incapable of sincere enjoyment implies that twenty-somethings are unauthentic assholes and that Generation X had it right all along.
Here’s what I have to say to all of you self-serious, hipster-bashing Gen X-ers in return: The mohawks of your youth may seem brighter under the crepuscular rays of nostalgia, but they still look like shit. Think piece after think piece might commend your life choices, but they unfairly vilify mine.
Take the recent phenomenon of so-called hipsters (especially male indie-rock fans) admitting their love for Taylor Swift and pop music in general. I’ve noticed on Facebook, Twitter, music blogs and forums a subset of twenty-something straight dudes casually posting about their favorite Taylor Swift songs.
“Problems? You wanna talk about problems?” an anonymous friend of mine wrote. “I just downloaded Bieber and T-Swizzle’s newest albums... Help me...”
I made this flowchart for the Best of 2012 issue of the UCSD Guardian. By design, I could be "Oblivion" or "Everything Is Embarrassing" — can't really decide on a Spice Girl. Posh was my favorite growing up but Scary is a WAY better singer.
