Shiro and Adamās Relationship
Fair warning: Spoilers for Voltron (Iām labeling the whole thing just in case), Vague Information (cause Iām trying to avoid as much spoilers as I can while I catch up) and a really long post.
That this man of minority, design with mental heath issues (and as weāve learned thatās not even the entire extent of his battle), perhaps openly gay? (Definitely on the LGBT+ spectrum ā trying to avoid all the spoilers) and in what was most likely a long term committed relationship (research lacking for spoilers), he is so respected and human. Heās not a leader that the fictional characters look up to, but a strong representation that we in real life can look up to as well.
And now weāve gotten confirmation that weāll be meeting his significant other (Adam) in the next season and from what Iāve seen, itās going to be an interesting reunion. They didnāt separate on the best of terms, Iām almost certain their last conversation had to do with Shiro deciding to leave on the Kerberos Mission and from the spoken dialogue, they both seemed to be at the end of their rope in their relationship. Adam, rightfully so, didnāt want to see Shiro put himself through something so dangerous when Shiro was already dealing with what seems to be some kind of disease that is deteriorating his physical health. Shiro, understandably, didnāt want to let his dream pass him by after working so long and hard to achieve it.
Iāve seen the sides that basically condemns or looks down on Adam for choosing not to support Shiro and [break off their relationship?]. Iāve seen the sides that want a tearful reunion of the two, being angry in the moment and saying things neither of them meant. Iāve seen the sides that point out how meaningful and necessary the relationship of Shiro and Keith is, either platonically or romantically, in comparison to Shiro and Adam.
Iām not really here to weigh in on any side or point out any grand parallels or anything. I kind of just want to express what Iām really excited about and what I hope the Voltron Team will do with this.
Queer relationships in media arenāt anywhere near as abundant as heteronormative ones are. Itās getting better certainly and that makes me so excited for what Voltron is doing. Iāve heard that itās also been confirmed that Shiro and Adamās relationship is over, and thatās a form of representation as well. One thatās not as rare, but still pretty uncommon (then again I donāt make it my duty to watch a ton of media so my idea on these statics are probably skewed).
I want to see this relationship. I want to see the relationship that has run its course. Where two people gave everything they could and the relationship just didnāt work out. I want to see the human side of this relationship, the bad of Adam and the bad of Shiro. How this event and the subsequent consequences affected them both.
How Adam may have come to regret his words to Shiro, and how he dealt with his disappearance. How he handled the very real fact [that regardless of his actual feelings in the moment] that his last words to the man he loved were how he (Adam) didnāt support him (Shiro). How he has come to mature and grow from that experience.
How Shiro must have felt, when he realized that what they wanted was so different it drove them apart. When the mission failed and he got a chance to think about Adam (cause Iām sure there were times he did) what he felt. And how he came to terms with his part on this failed relationship (cause Iām sure they were both thinking on that āwhat could I have done differently to save this relationshipā feeling that people when get when going through break ups).
Adam obviously supported Shiro through a lot, he wouldnāt have been dubbed as Shiroās significant other if their relationship wasnāt that deep. But Adam didnāt support Shiro enough and Shiro didnāt compromise enough.
I want to see how these two work through this bad (and them some) situation and break up (cause they might not be getting back together or had already broken up before the Misson?). How they are both able to come out of this relationship. I donāt want Adam to be some some guy who comes into the plot to be some pr*ck that says āI told you soā or āit was all your faultā in that one note villain way, nor do I want him to be some attention grubbing / inconsiderate schemer or what have you. I want them to both be what the characters of Voltron have been up to this pointā¦ I want them to be human. Yes even the aliens.
The Voltron characters all have such depth to them, theyāre great people with good and bad points to their personalities, ones that have been slowly developing (some on a more subtle level then others). I want a healthy representation of a relationship, both before and after. Because not all romantic relationships that end are bad or toxic or not āthe oneā. Some relationships just donāt work or fizzle out, some just donāt bring the happiness either party deserves.
I want to see Shiro and Adamās reunion, and wether they stay (get back?) together or part ways romantically I want to see that too. I love what the Voltron Team has created and I trust them to keep delivering this wonderful story.
