Woman of the Apocalypse, c. 1390
From the LA Times:
This particular asteroid, officially called 2014 HQ124, was discovered in April by NASA's NEOWISE mission, a wide-field infrared space telescope that has been repurposed to hunt for comets and asteroids.
April?! Seriously, get it together NASA.
It's the end of the world?
At least the housewives will be spared.
Killer robots will be debated during an informal meeting of experts at the United Nations in Geneva.
If you outlaw killer robots, only outlaws will have killer robots.
Survival - detail from 1956 Civil Defense booklet.
The Paleofuture Blog is great stuff.
Defense One brings news of a new report outlining the inevitable robot uprising. The report by computer scientist and entrepreneur Steven Omohundro says “anti-social” artificial intelligence in the future is not only possible, but probable:
“When roboticists are asked by nervous onlookers about safety, a common answer is ‘We can always unplug it!’ But imagine this outcome from the chess robot’s point of view,” writes Omohundro. “A future in which it is unplugged is a future in which it cannot play or win any games of chess. This has very low utility and so expected utility maximisation will cause the creation of the instrumental subgoal of preventing itself from being unplugged. If the system believes the roboticist will persist in trying to unplug it, it will be motivated to develop the subgoal of permanently stopping the roboticist,” he writes.
In other words, the more logical the robot, the more likely it is to fight you to the death.
A chilling vision of things to come.
1 Blood Moon Down, 3 To Go
This morning's lunar eclipse, the first of four alleged harbingers of the apocalypse, has come and gone. Things seem unchanged for the moment, but it's too soon to tell whether or not this is merely the calm before the storm. Although it is strange that the Bible would pick an eclipse that wasn't visible in the holy land to signal the second coming.
Oh well, let's just hope the next eclipse isn't the most dangerous eclipse of them all.
From The Christian Post:
The producer behind the upcoming Christian movie "Left Behind," starring Nicolas Cage, said that he believes the world is currently living in the end times before the Rapture, the prophecy where believers are said to be taken from Earth to heaven at the Second Coming of Christ.
This is good hype for your movie, but If we are nearing the Rapture, that's really going to cut into the DVD sales.
The coming series of lunar eclipses is raising apocalyptic concerns among some theologians, the Examiner reports:
When the blood moon appears this month it may strike you as looking wounded. The blood moon will be drenched in a deep red hue, almost resembling the color of blood. This event has a significant link to the apocalypse that was deciphered from a bible scripture, according to some religious leaders.
These leaders point to various passages from a popular e-book:
“He made the moon to mark the seasons.” Psalm 104:19.
“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars.” Luke 21:25
“The sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light: Matthew.” 24:29
“The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood….” “….the coming of the great glorious day of the Lord.” Acts 2:20
I hope this is covered extensively in this week's episode of The Cosmos.
From The Epoch Times:
A number of bloggers are posting videos that show bison and other animals allegedly leaving Yellowstone National Park, prompting theories that as earthquakes ramp up the seismic activity will set off the Yellowstone supervolcano.
If you see a herd of bison running past you, try to keep up.
From Live Science:
Even a relatively small regional nuclear war could trigger global cooling, damage the ozone layer and cause droughts for more than a decade, researchers say.
When it comes to thermonuclear war, apparently size doesn't matter.
From Reuters:
Fierce solar blasts that could have badly damaged electrical grids and disabled satellites in space narrowly missed Earth in 2012, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.
They go on to describe the mayhem we missed out on:
The bursts from the sun, called coronal mass ejections, carried southward magnetic fields and would have clashed with Earth's northward field, causing a shift in electrical currents that could have caused electrical transformers to burst into flames, Luhmann said. The fields also would have interfered with global positioning system satellites.
So close yet so far, Mayans.
The Guardian brings news of a NASA study on the collapse of society:
A new study sponsored by Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center has highlighted the prospect that global industrial civilisation could collapse in coming decades due to unsustainable resource exploitation and increasingly unequal wealth distribution.
What happened to you NASA? You used to be cool. What happened to, oh, I don't know, actually going into space? Our astronauts are hitchhiking with cosmonauts while your so-called "Space Flight Center" is doing this Debbie-downer, borderline socialist study? Lame. Get to building moon bases already.
The Daily Mail brings us one more thing to worry about:
The mysterious force [dark matter] could be what killed off the dinosaurs, according to a new study that attempts to explain presence.
The research argues that comets are not created by the sun’s influence over space rocks, but instead pushed towards our planet by dark matter.
From the Daily Mail:
Scientists and legal experts have raised concerns that an ambitious experiment using a super-charged ion collider could accidentally destroy planet Earth.
One of the world’s most powerful particle accelerators, which is capable of generating particles hotter than four trillion degrees Celsius, has come under the spotlight after experts have warned that micro black holes and strange matter could be generated.
