The last talk Renly had with Harrold was a short one but one that left him thinking for a long time. The other Kings had a few good ideas and Renly had been thinking about one in particular none stop. “I do not doubt that I will. After the climb up I am sure that I will like it. Besides, we have things to discuss left from our last meeting. Is there anywhere we can go to do this?”

"The climb can be quite difficult but it is entirely worth it, I can assure you of that. The view of the Vale is quite extraordinary and unlike anything in all of Westeros. It did look a lot more interesting with dragons flying around but I put a stop to that for safety reasons.” Harrold nodded and dismissed everyone. “My solar is quite private and I make sure there are no people to listen in. Is it regarding my son and daughter? I hope you have considered my offer.”

DONTIN

Dontin should had stood the instant he heard King Harrold’s voice but this was the sept and the king could forgive his lack of manners for this one moment.  “You didn’t have to come.” Dontin said barely above a whisper. “I know it was a long trip and you have your kingdom to tend to your grace.”

Under any normal circumstances, Harrold would have stuck to protocol but he had felt this feeling the year previous and it was the worst thing he had ever felt. There was an emptiness inside that he still felt for the loss of his first child and the pain went on and on even after Eddard was born and safe. “Please,” he began, “do not stand.” He took a seat and hoped that Dontin would do as well. “The Kingdom is fine and can wait. What you are going through is one of the hardest things. The loss of a child is devisating but your wife as well...I am so sorry this has happened to you.”

It was another cold and dreary day at Castle Black, the snow fell as usual and all who need not be outside were taking shelter within the castle’s walls. There was one however who braved the cold, a woman in a bearskin cloak who seemed neither bothered nor eager to get inside. She was a sight that the men of the nights watch had long since become accustomed to, one many of them enjoyed as a matter of fact. Val, the Wildling Princess. It was a well-known fact that Val hated to be idle, she didn’t like to be huddled up inside all day and if she got bored well…gods help them all. Despite her having lived at Castle Black for many years she had still not grown fond of the Crows that surrounded her day in and day out, when she got bored she would often take to fighting them under the guise of ‘training’ and very few escaped without injury. It was perhaps for that very reason that all the trainees below breathed a silent sigh of relief as they saw someone approach her. Val, however, was less pleased. She had become accustomed to having to deal with the southerners on behalf of her people but that did not mean that she enjoyed it any more than when she had first bent the knee to Selyse Baratheon. She didn’t bother to turn around to address them “Whatever you are here for must be very important to bring you this far north” It was only a little patronizing, that was something Lord Crow had requested she work on when dealing with the people south of the wall. 

Only once had Harrold been to the Wall and that was just after it had fell and he had accompanied some of the Vale knights to see the damage and to make certain that most of his knights would be coming back to the Vale alive once it was all done. “I came to see my men and to see if they believe the Wall has healed and rebuilt enough for them to return to the Vale. It is where they belong. I’d prefer to have them back. Who might you be?”

   “I have never had that name nor have I ever belonged to such a house.” House Baratheon was her house and if she could choose, Myrcella would choose House Baratheon everytime but her mother had ruined such childish dreams.        “I came with well wishes from my guardian, queen Margaery.” 

"If your parents are both Lannisters, that will make you one through your blood. Name or not, that is what you are. So Margaery sent a bastard of a disgraced house to wish another Queen well?” Harrold shook his head. “What and insult.”

Ezzara had truly never thought of anyone she’d known as a friend–there were comrades in battle, and there were those that she admired…but she’d never used any other term to describe it. The Yi Tish woman was caught off guard a moment, and then nodded once, with something like a smile on her lips. “War will come if this dragon-pretender has anything to do with it,” she retorted. “We will be ready to crush him.”

For a moment he thought that he had seen something close to a smile on the Yi Tish woman's face and was relieved that was the reaction after his own rather passionate words. He had meant them all. “We will see about that. I do not want to but if he threatens war then I will release one of the dragons and show everyone that the pretender is no Targaryen.”

         They had both been so busy with the kingdom, with being new parents that it was a rarity to find each other in any moment that was close to quiet or just the two of them. “Of course you don’t,” she beamed as he approached, “I missed you as well. Eddard is asleep so I think this is the first time since he has been born that we have time together.” 

"You are right. Even from our room and his nursery, we can hear him. One thing about our son, he has a good set of lungs.” Harrold smiled when he remembered his son but then the smile faded when he remembered the conversation with one of his bastards. “I wanted to talk to you about one of the former servants here. She was one of my bastards and you knew. Why didn’t you tell me?”

STANNIS

Unlike most of the kings in the realm, Stannis wore no crown unless it was for official business. It seemed to be the fashion of the young kings to showcase their titles on the heads piece they wore.  “I hope it will be a joyous time.” Stannis smiled as he dismounted his horse. “I hope my guest and I have chambers already.”

Harrold would always show kindness to Stannis Baratheon because he was his first ally and then his reputation of a man with honour. A cold man but still one with honour. “I hope that it will be for you. We have never had a guest say that they have had an unpleasant time so I am sure you will like it here. Your chambers are all prepared for yourself and your closest party.”

“You should not apologize,” Ezzara replied promptly. “Your duty is to this land and to the people, as it should be.” He had no obligation to sit and speak with her. “The Vale is a good place,” she answered with a nod. “I am glad to have had the chance to make this place my home.”

"You are part of that, Ezzara. My people and my land. You have protected it and put it before your own goals. That makes you part of my Kingdom and as strange as it may sound, one of my closest friends.” To think that all started with him being naked and covered in blood from a trip to the dragons. “The Vale Knights have never fought so hard. You have done the Vale a great thing.”

     “A friend who’s name would condemn me rather than assist your grace.” Myrcella had never expected a man like King Harrold to understand these things. From his birth he was to be the heir of the vale and now he ruled it as its king. He knew little of hardships.     “My name is Myrcella Waters, ward to the Queen of the Reach and Rock and old friend to your            wife.”

"Waters. One belonging to the former house Lannister.” Everyone knew Myrcella. More beautiful than Cersei, they said. He had never met the girls mother but if she was half as beautiful as her daughter then that quite something. “What business do you have with the Queen?”

Harrold could not recall Sansa or any raven mentionThe Lord Commander was a surprising sight. Despite him being a bastard, he still would treat Jon as a high guest given his status and relation to his wife. “It warms my heart to hear that. I do not recall you at my wedding but I hope that the Wall is better than it was during that time.”

   The news that his wife was once again with child was music to Dontin’s ears. He thanked the gods for another blessing and hoped that this child would be a girl, a little lady for him to dote on and for Eddara to spoil as well. Her belly had only started to swell slightly when she fell sick and Dontin had spared no expense to get both her and his unborn child healthy once more. It was all for nothing. The news that his wife had passed due to fever had come early in the morning and Dontin was left to mourn for his wife and child.  In the sept, it was cold and dark but Dontin had to make the ride to High Garden. Even though his wife was not of his faith, he had no idea how to pray to the old gods but still, he had to pray to someone for her and his child.  Despite the morning being early, Dontin had heard the footsteps approaching behind him but still he did not move from his prayer. He waited instead for the person to approach him. 

 The news of Eddara’s death shocked Harrold and was news that he knew would bring many people a great sadness. when they would learn of the news. His thoughts instantly went to Dontin and his two sons worrying for how they would all take such a big loss. “Dontin,” Harrold said softly as he entered, “I came as soon as I heard.” He had never been close with Dontin but he knew the pain of losing a child before it was even born and wanted to help the man as soon as he could.

“No.” She had been worried most of all that Cissy’s treasonous statements would come back to bite her–she did not care to defend her mother’s words, given how careless her mother had been towards her own well-being. “Lady Waynwood arranged for me to come and work here nearly four years ago. When Daenerys was Queen. I’ve not spoken to you more than necessary all that time. The Queen has known who my mother was for over a year. Since just after the wedding. What my mother writes has nothing to do with me.” Cissy was too hopeful to see whatever man she had been a lover to, while Alys knew perfectly well what sort of man he was.  “I already have intentions to leave, Your Grace.” Alys answered plainly. “Her Grace Queen Arianne has offered work to me.”

Harrold was furious. A small part of that was against this girl, his bastard daughter, but the majority of it was at the girl's mother until she mentioned Anya Waynwood being the one to orchestrate the girl's placement so close to himself. “Why would she place you near me? I thought she had sorted out your mother's situation when she arranged that marriage.” He would have to have words with her. “Your mother names you and speaks of her plans for you constantly through this letter and I assume that she has written you more than this one letter.”

To hear that she was already making plans for her departure was nothing short of a relief to him. “Good. That is one problem that sorts itself out. If she needs you before the week is done you can go freely.”

Harrold hated his crown. It never seemed to fit right although everyone else seemed to like it and assure him that it was good. He was never meant to be King and never wanted it so that was why he thought that did not feel good. He only wore it on special occasions and for when guests came to the Vale. “Welcome to the Vale and the Eyrie. I hope that you have a pleasant time here.”

          There was always work to be done as Queen of the Vale and sometimes some of the nobles wrote letters to her and to her husband asking for things or advice if they were unable to make it to court. She did not mind and rather enjoyed to write the letters and was just finishing one off when she heard that someone had joined her in the solar. “I am just signing my name and I will be done, will you take a seat and tell me what brings you here?”

Harrold had not seen Sansa in a while. After visiting their son, he went straight to her solar hoping to find her. When he saw her sitting at the desk, he was reminded at how lucky he was to have a wife that was beautiful and as dedicated to his kingdom. “I needed a reason?” he asked playfully before planting a quick kiss on her lips. “I will entertain you. I missed my wife.”

Putting his drink down and slowly standing up, Auster’s men were suddenly alert and glaring at the kings men. It was as if they were evaluating each one to see any physical weaknesses. “The taverns are full and I prefer to be outdoors.”

"Regardless of what you prefer, there are rules. I will not have my streets tarnished with drunkards. If you want to continue, find a tavern. If you do not wish to go to a tavern, leave your drink and the Vale.” His knights were not worried and neither was he.

      “I understand that the queen is busy but we are old friends who have yet to get back in contact.”    It would have been better if Myrcella had just explained who she was but her name would do her no favors in this realm. Myrcella also doubted King Harrold’s kindness given how he seemed to be with the Lannisters and bastards. 

"A friend that tries to avoid giving her name. It makes me think that you are not a friend like you claim to be. Why are you trying to hide your name? You must know that the Queen does not take private audiences with just anyone.”
