Jorah is the only son and child of Jeor Mormont. When Jorah matured and became a man, his father, Jeor, abdicated his seat and left the lordship of Bear Island to Jorah. With his father joining the Night’s Watch, Jorah became the Lord of Bear Island. After his thirty-fifth name day, Jorah fought in the Greyjoy Rebellion which was where he distinguished himself as a courageous soldier on the battlefield. Jorah was one of the first men through the breach during the siege of Pyke. That, along with his dedication and performance in battle was what earned Jorah a Knighthood from King Robert Baratheon himself for recognition of his bravery. While this was a happy time for Jorah, it was not long before this event that his wife, a member of House Glover, had died after her third miscarriage. After the failed Greyjoy rebellion, a tourney was hosted at Lannisport which Ser Jorah won and crowned Lynesse Hightower his Queen of Love and Beauty and then, smitten with her beauty, he asked for her hand in marriage and, to his surprise, Lord Leyton Hightower, her father, agreed and the two married. It was a love marriage but the happiness did not last long. Jorah’s wife had spent her life in the rich and prosperous Reach and so quickly disliked her life on the isolated Bear Island, growing miserable because of it. This was noticed by Ser Jorah who tried to appease her and reproduce her lavish lifestyle with expensive gifts but it drove him to financial ruin. Being desperate to pay off his debts, Jorah resorted to breaking of the Seven Kingdom’s oldest taboos by participating in the slave trade. When Eddard Stark learned that Jorah sold poachers so a Tyroshi slaver, he condemned Jorah to death but when Eddard arrived on Bear Island to execute him, Jorah had fled with his wife to Lys rather than be executed or take the black like his father. He became a sellsword in Lys but was still unable to afford the lifestyle that his wife wanted so she took a lover that told Jorah to leave the city and Lynesse otherwise he would be enslaved because of his debts. A heartbroken Jorah then left to Volantis and then the Free Cities to work as an unaffiliated mercenary, selling his sword to whoever paid the highest price.
In the years after Jorah left Lys, Jorah was in Pentos where he attended the wedding of Daenerys Targaryen to Khal Drogo under the instruction of Varys who has Jorah report the Targaryen’s movements to him in return for a royal pardon. As he travels with Daenerys and the Khalasar, Jorah comes to admire Daenerys for her integrity and courage and is present when Khal Drogo kills Viserys. When Khal Drogo is near death, Jorah remains loyal to Daenerys and her unborn child to Drogo. When Kgal Drogo dies, Jorah worries that his Queen plans to commit suicide upon her husband’s pyre and begs her not to but she does not listen to him. Jorah watches in amazement as Daenerys rises out of the ashes, unburnt and with three dragons. Ser Jorah is the first of Daenerys’ Queensguard. As Jorah falls more in love with his Queen, he stops sending information back to Westeros. During the War of Five Kings, Jorah remains with his Queen as they sail to Slaver’s Bay to buy Unsullied. There, he meets Missandei, a young girl with a talent for languages, and commands his Queen’s army to victory against Yunkai and freeing the slaves. Not long after, Ser Jorah learns of the death of the false King, Joffrey Baratheon, name changed to Waters, and that Westeros is going to be a divided Kingdom again so writes to Varys about Daenerys having one of the regions to rule. After negotiating with the other Kings and members of the Council, Daenerys is given the Vale as it would be best suited for her dragons. With this news, Jorah also reveals his work with Varys as an informant and tells Daenerys and although hurt, she says she will try and forgive them as they sail to their new home of the Vale.
In the fourteen years after the war, Jorah remains in King’s Landing to serve his Queen as her spokesperson for the Council while dividing his time between King’s Landing and the Vale. He knows that the people grow fearful each day of the dragons and of the Queen but hoped that her ward, and heir, Harrold Hardyng would dispell those doubts. When Harrold took the throne and the dragons, Jorah was in King’s Landing and after learning that Daenerys was to flee to Mereen, he went straight for the ship. He is now looking for his Queen and wants to help her regain her throne in the Vale and to take back her dragons back from the usurper.
