Welcome one and all to the 2022 Harry Potter Podfic Minifest! This is a casual fest highlighting new podfics of works in the Harry Potter fandom.
You can find the full fest rules and FAQ at the hp_podfic_mini_fest_2022 collection on AO3, but here's the overview:
no minimum length, no maximum length (podfics of microfics welcome!)
any audio work featuring the Harry Potter fandom is welcome
submitted works must not have been posted elsewhere before
works-in-progress should not have previous chapters posted
to participate, add your work to the AO3 collection by September 23
new works will be revealed every day starting on September 26

How to podfic
This is just a brief outline based on my own experiences. Feel free to add in any advice, tools, or suggestions. And, just in case you donât know what a podfic is, itâs an audiobook version of fanfiction.
1. I want to record but I donât have recording equipment
You can record an audio file on your phone or use free audio recording software Audacity. Iâve used both, but these days I prefer audacity because I find it easier to remove my flubs and rerecord without having to start at the start.Â
2. Where can I host my files? AO3 doesnât do hosting
I got myself a free soundcloud account. There are other audio hosting services out there. Find the one you like the best.Â
3. How do I post it so people can find it on AO3?
Once you have the file hosted on, for example, soundcloud you can click on âshareâ and then âembedâ. Copy the embed code and paste it into your fic on AO3. Make sure youâre in html editing mode at the time.
If you have the mp3 file hosted elsewhere (Iâve recorded mp3s on my phone and hosted them on google drive, for instance), you can use the native audio player available in AO3. Hereâs how.
4. How do I tag it?
Add the tag #podfic to your fic. You can post the podfic on its own, or you can post it together with the fic text. I just started a new story last night and Iâm going to podfic each chapter as I post and embed the player at the top of the chapter.Â
There are more specific tags as well that mention how long the podfic is. If you enter âpodficâ into the additional tags section on AO3, the others will pop up.Â
5. I donât want to record it myself, but Iâm happy if someone else wants to
Use the tag #podfic welcome. This will allow people who record podfic to know that youâre open to it. You can also add a statement to your AO3 profile that lets podficcers know that they have your permission to record. You can see an example of this on my profile. This is not the only way to do this, but it gives you an idea of the type of things you can say. Â

Each participant will be assigned a letter of the alphabet at random, selected using Wheel Decide. Each letter comes with four word prompts that begin with that letter.
Participants choose a word from the list, and this will be how your character (or characters - you can kill more than one!) will die. How you interpret the word you choose is up to you, as long as the death fulfils the prompt.
â¨Signups will be open from 12pm 28th August (NZST) to when all 20 places are claimed.
â¨Letters will be selected for participants using the Wheel Decide website.
â¨Once all participants have been assigned a letter, they will each receive an email or Facebook PM (depending on your preference) with four deathly prompt options.
⨠Once you have confirmed your prompt choice by replying to the message, start writing!
â¨All submissions will be revealed together on the 31st of October (NZST)
â¨The collection will be hosted on Archive Of Our Own. You will need to have an account to submit your entry.

All that is gaslighting. When people make the types of statements indicated above, they are using a form of emotional manipulation which seeks to undermine their target. To try and coerce them into questioning their feelings, their reactions, their perception of reality.
If you're guilty of using those phrases - stop it. Just fucking stop.
No one has to like everything. But it costs zero $$ to not be a dick if you don't like it.
Don't mock it. Don't shame the author. Don't start "what fics do you hate the most" posts on social media.
Don't gaslight. Don't be an asshole. Just click the back button.
