There’s been this weird idea floating about that only white women knit. That only white women spin and crochet and weave. That the knitting tradition is oh, Scottish or Scandinavian or Aran. That this is a universal given in white knitting land is remarkable given how many lush South American hats and jumpers you’ve seen designed and made by indigenous peoples, given we know where “magic”…

Shibori Tye Dye Experiment
Shibori Tye Dye Experiment
In number #3 of ‘things to do when recovering from an illness’, Shibori is a bit of a winner. You have to be able to potter about a bit, add a pot of commercial due to your online shopping order, and most critically, be strong enough to lift wet strips of cotton onto the line, or your drying mechanism of choice So I’d ticked off all those, and found a charity shop sheet otherwise destined for…

“All of me, why not take all of me?” Hand embroidered Billie Holiday stretched in a 5" canvas. 17 different shades of single ply grey thread. Trying out a world outside my comfort zone.
By Tinycup Needleworks, my favourite embroidery artist of all time, the beautiful and the macabre all rolled in to detailed miniature embroideries. Britt also talks about her work in a fab interview here.

Forget me not
I found a cute spider by a pond and decided to try and stitch it chowing down on a bug.
ITS DONE! …technically I still have to fill in the triceratops horns but CLOSE ENOUGH!
45 hours of sewing, Special thanks to tinysketchbook who drew the beautiful original illustration~
Best. Embroidery. Ever. (Also maybe the best movie moment ever.)
I am not liking all these white women who think theyre hip and cool for making ugly cross-stitch crap w aave phrasing and hip hop lyrics. Note the reason they find it clever is that kinda shits posed to be dainty and wholesome, and so they juxtapose it w what they deem vulgar, street, rough aka black people things. I am not finding it so clever upon reconsideration. I am finding it shady, racist and appropriative as shit.

Week 20 of the #YearOfStitch : Fancy Brick Stitch
Oh heyyyyy … FANCY.
I tried making this stitch every which way and this was the easiest but it does require you to really map out what the size of the filler is going to be. Starting with the dark blue would indeed make mapping it out easier but then stitching becomes a beast. I say: try it every which way and see what feels best.
Start with those small horizontal stitches
Then move on to the vertical stitches…
Finish it off with the long horizontal stitches (backstitch)
Boom.
Enjoy!
