Well… he seemed so certain of it so what was the harm? Aside from making his crush into something more substantial. Really he did try to leave that life behind, he did. It was just hard when he had his brother who would sneak in to see him, Amanda’s money-seeking goons, and Markus who would buy cupcakes and things when his father was alive and even now that Carl had passed. He supposed you never really could leave a life like that behind.

Simon couldn’t help but laugh when told that. Sought after? Only by extortionists. “You might be shocked to hear this, but being the disowned son of a well-known mafia family isn’t desirable for most. To normal people I’m too hazardous because what if they come for me? To people who idolize mob life, I’m pathetic and probably should’ve just been dealt with instead of disowned.” He moved back behind the display case to rearrange the day’s pastries. At least there was a bunch for Rose’s shelter since he wouldn’t have any business for the rest of the day.

“Well, we have a plan now at least. For now though I’m gonna box these pastries up and take them to my friend’s homeless shelter. I refuse to let good food go to waste.” The blonde pulled out several boxes to put the baked goods in, including a box in which he placed a dozen of Markus’ favorite cupcake flavors. “Here, take these. For being so sweet to help me.” Blue eyes sparkled like jewels as he held the box out to the mob boss.

Markus accepted the box of cupcakes, already looking forward to eating one later. “I’ll come by again tomorrow,” Markus promised. “Not for cupcakes - these will last me a couple days. I could take you to lunch.”

North and Josh would probably be a little annoyed that he would be spending time he usually reserved for them with someone they’d never met, but he couldn’t care less at this point. He’d tell them all about this later, and he knew that at the very least, Josh would side with him.

“I’ll leave my number with you,” he added, pulling out a pen. He very rarely gave his personal number to people outside his circle, but this was important. “Call me if you run into more trouble, alright?”

Leo looked down at the floor. All the feelings that he had been so desperate to cover up and pretend not to struggle with… was what Markus wanted to show people. Well, he probably wouldn’t be blasting it out everywhere, but it wouldn’t be a hidden thing.

“…I guess I could visit a few times. It would get me out of the house, right?”

“You’re free to come by anytime,” Markus reiterated. “You don’t have to talk about your own troubles, if it makes you uncomfortable. But another friendly face would be good for them. Maybe good for you as well.”

Oh Markus. He was so sweet when he truly cared about something. Definitely not helping his crush on him at all. “Just because her two goons believed us doesn’t mean we can fool her or her sons. Well.. Connor maybe, he’s a sweet boy and he’s been with Danny for a while now. The other one though? He’s a little more observant.”

Simon gave him a soft smile, his gaze almost sad. He didn’t want to fake it; he’d just keep falling harder. But he needed to save his bakery and Markus was offering him help. Couldn’t deny the boss of a mafia family.

“Okay. If it really isn’t trouble for you then I’ll accept. Hopefully we won’t be forced to pretend forever.” Even if he wanted it to last forever. Simon wanted it to be real but he could handle this. A taste of what he can never really have.

“And of course I’ll give you sweets as payment. Gotta sweeten the deal for my savior, you know.”

“They’d believe me,” he assured Simon, trying to stifle the blush that was threatening to creep up his neck. The truth was, they’d probably believe it because Markus was serious in his interest and attraction to Simon. He genuinely cared, and wanted to do these things for Simon even if there was no danger. He just assumed that sort of relationship wouldn’t appeal to someone who opted out of his lifestyle.

“Of course it’s no trouble. And even if we do have to pretend forever, that’s alright with me. I’m not interested in anyone else.” He rubbed the back of his neck, realizing he hadn’t even asked Simon if he was in a relationship already or interested in being in one with someone else. “I hope things are the same for you? I’d hate to step on someone’s toes by hanging around you so much. I’m sure you’re a sought after man.”

Though the last statement was said rather jokingly with a charming smile, Markus was being completely serious. Simon was incredibly attractive and had the best bakery in the city to boot. Who wouldn’t want someone like that?

Damn he loved this man. Even in the middle of this maddening heat-induced situation Markus was still sweet. “You should look at yourself. Strong and gorgeous. Fuck, I need you in me.”

Simon made sure to wrap himself around the other man while kissing him roughly. On the lips, along his jaw, down his throat. He even gives little nibbles in hopes of leaving a mark. After tonight Markus is going to be his, he’ll make sure of it. “Please, Markus, I can’t wait much longer.” He whined with the intense need he felt. “I’m ready for you, please!”

Too impatient for anything else, Markus laid Simon over the floor, whipping off his shirt as he climbed over him. But right now, he just wanted the rest of Simon’s clothes off. His own could wait until later. And he wasn’t afraid of just tearing it off himself.

He was running almost purely on instinct as he reached for Simon’s pants, skipping the slow and methodical way of getting them off and just trying to jerk them off his body as quickly as possible. To be fair, they’d be lucky if they got half their clothes off before the end of the first round.

As soon as his pants and underwear were low enough, Markus was reaching between Simon’s leg to stroke the delicate skin there along with his entrance. “Fuck,” he hissed. “I’m sorry this is happening so fucking fast... I’ll make it up to you later. Right now, I just... I have to do this.”

He really wanted to tell him. God, he’d wanted to tell him the moment he realized he was in love! But Markus just seemed so… beyond him. So out of his league that he never stood a chance. He couldn’t risk aggravating the illness more by being denied. Already he was on his last leg.

“Trust me, I’m sure once he comes by and sees me not knowing him, he’ll probably never come back again.” Simon replied in a distraught tone. Hopefully he was wrong but Markus couldn’t know yet that it was him. “But if he does stick around… I’d just want him to know it’s not his fault. I fell in love and was too scared to chase it. Too afraid of rejection to try.”

Somehow this felt so cruel. Markus cared so much and he wasn’t going to know him at all after the surgery. “I know it’s because you care, Markus but I just want him to be left alone. I don’t want him blamed for this. If he ever does ask you why I don’t know him, just please don’t be hateful? Don’t get angry. Just tell him it’s okay and I hope maybe we can try again to just be friends.”

Markus already hated this guy. He hated him with such a passion for being oblivious to his best friend’s suffering. If he knew who it was, he would probably go to the guy’s house and demand to know why he didn’t love Simon.

“How could he not love you?” Markus blurted. “How can you ask me not to hate him when he’s...” He couldn’t even finish the sentence. “It’s not okay. He could have killed you, Simon... how can I just look past that?”

To Markus, it was just so much more simple. He wanted Simon to live without complication so badly, he’d do nearly anything to fix this. “He should know how badly he fucked up. He really should. Once I know who he is, he’ll be lucky if I don’t knock his lights out.”

“Shit, that’s a lot of faith in me, dude.” Leo rubbed the back of his neck, nervously. How could he help anyone see humans in a better light? “I appreciate it though, not many people have faith in me in general.”

Markus half-smiled. Some time ago, he would be in the same place as Leo - confused, and ignorant to how the other side thought or felt. It was of no fault of his own, and that was part of the reason Markus was so sure he could be of help.

“Many of the androids there don’t understand that humans feel exactly the same things that they do,” he explained. “Self-doubt. Regret. Bewilderment. Confusion as to who they are. But you, you’ve suffered with these things more than almost anyone I know. And you’re doing your best to overcome it; that gives me every reason to have faith in you.”

Simon leaned into the contact even though it felt like his lungs were full from it. He just wanted Markus to hold him. Which meant he really needed to go through with the surgery so he could live long enough to become his friend again.

The blonde took slow, deep breaths to try and keep from aggravating it further. “Bad enough that if I don’t go to the hospital tonight I won’t be seeing tomorrow.” He chuckled darkly at the thought. “Can’t believe I was really prepared to just let go. It’s not like I’ll remember the love I’ve lost if I survive the surgery.”

Markus still couldn’t get over the fact that someone could be completely indifferent to Simon’s love. Maybe they were in a relationship already? Maybe they weren’t romantically interested in men?

Any other reasons seemed ridiculous. Simon was... incredible. He was stunning, talented, kind-hearted, and selfless. Anyone in the universe would be lucky to have his affection. Of this, Markus was sure.

“Whoever it is, I don’t want them around you if you do have the surgery - they could hurt you again. Please, Simon, can I at least know who they are? I won’t tell them if you don’t want me to, but I want to know so I can maybe protect you this time around.”

She tilted her head and just stared at him.  She supposed he was good-looking and ok to look at. She hated the asymmetry of his eyes, at least if they were both the same she could have added it to the collection. She’d definitely have to surprise him. Head on she would most certainly lose at worst. At best, she would have marks on her which would lead to suspicion. 

Pushing the door backwards, and she walked behind the door to latch it onto the wall. Then she returned and leaned against it. “Anything else? Tea, coffee?” Poison?

He gave her a strained smile as he carried the painting inside, and gently as he could, set it down on the floor. He did appreciate the offer; this young lady was considerate to ask. “No, thank you. I was planning on finding a motel in just a little bit to sleep - but I suppose I could afford to refill my water bottle before then.”

Markus didn’t for one second consider that this lady could be intending to harm him. Perhaps it was his sheltered background, or the assumption that anyone living in a place so lavish wouldn’t be criminals.

“I’m sorry, I never did ask - how did you want me to address you?”

Well he should’ve known a member of the mafia would question such things. His brother had too last time he was able to stop by. The blonde sighed again, wrapping his arms around himself. “They’ve been causing me issues for years. When I had a family friend running this place it was fine, they left us alone. But once I took over at.. twenty? That’s when Amanda sent her goons in to start pushing me around. It’s been a few years now.”

He looked at Markus with a soft smile. Simon remembered seeing the other for the first time with his father. As a young teen he had seen this boy with short hair, blue and green eyes, beautiful freckles on his darker complexion. The blonde had a crush from that moment on. Then he was disowned for his unwillingness to join the life fully and he thought he’d never see that handsome boy again.

“I never wanted to be part of this life, Markus. The thought of calling on you or any other family for help… Well, one, I never thought anyone would answer anyway since I’m sure my parents told a few families about my being disowned.” An angry nod was given in response to the statement about Amanda. “Unfortunately. The debt is crippling but if I’m lucky then she’ll call off her dogs now that they think we’re a couple. Or I’ll wake up on fire.”

"Absolutely not," Markus said firmly at Simon's nonchalant admittance that Amanda could easily kill him. No. Amanda wouldn't ruin Simon's peace… just no. It was unthinkable that Simon could be hurt over this, when something as simple as pretending to be his boyfriend had scared off Amanda's dogs. 

Surely there was something he could do, even without having a gang war or paying her off.

Well… since the relationship trick had worked… 

"What if I came here every day?" He suggested gently, before he could mull it over further. "They won't touch you if they see me here. I'll just stop by for a few minutes every day. I'll take you out for lunch - that way, they think if they burn the bakery, it'll be an attack on me."

The more he spoke, the more he liked this idea. "It would be a way for me to help you without pulling you into this sort of mess."

And it had absolutely nothing with the fact that he found the blonde baker was someone he’d very much like to take on a date.

He knew with his family name - and obvious relation through his appearance - he was a target. People thought he had access to the money his family had because they didn’t publicize the fact that they disowned him. It led to him dealing with this shit for so long he was nearly drowning in debt from paying horrifically high ‘protection fees’, the rent for the space his bakery was in along with utilities and his apartment above the bakery.

And now the patrons were beginning to realize what was happening and began pouring out the building as calmly as possible. No way was he getting more business today with that scene. Damn it. The blonde tried not to sigh as he leaned into Markus more. Of course he knew Markus by rhia own family’s reputation before he ever actually met him but despite it all the man was sweet, not to mention devilishly handsome. The he buzzed off hair, the heterochromatic eyes, that smile.. Simon had never wanted to be part of this life but Markus was an exception.

The men in front of them frowned, one’s face pinching up with disgust that made the blonde’s blood boil. “Fine, then. We’ll let our boss know that the Manfred family is taking over the bakery due to… romantic alignment. I’m sure she’ll be understanding. Have a good afternoon, Lamb. Looks like you’ll be free from work for the rest of the day.”

Simon finally let out a groan as the men laughed their way down the street. At least that hopefully got him out of that situation. “Honestly I can’t thank you enough, Markus. I’ve been so sick of those bastards coming in here every month.” He removed himself from the man’s arms to grin at him. “Consider the cupcakes free of charge from now on. It’s the least I can do for getting them off my back.”

Once the men were fully out of earshot, Markus let himself relax just a little. Simon was safe - at least, for the moment. But this brought on several questions - some of which worried him.

“How long have they been harassing you?” He asked. “I know... we aren’t best friends, exactly, but I would have helped you immediately if you’d asked.”

He’d always had a soft spot for Simon. Even before the bakery, when Simon was a teenager, and Markus had spotted him just by chance at one of those ridiculously fancy parties... Simon had captivated him with his gentle demeanor. So few people in these families were like that. It was a breath of fresh air, and he hoped Simon would stay that way. Not become a monster like the rest.

“I know about Amanda’s little family. She’s probably been trying to force you to pay ridiculous amounts of money...”

“Well, the person I am isn’t great, just to warn you.” Leo knew that there was probably no way that Markus would get discouraged by that, but his self-deprecation wasn’t going away any time soon.

Hearing Markus invite him to New Jericho was a shock to him. Why the hell would he be welcomed there?

“For real? You think they wouldn’t mind me there?”

“Some of them would probably be a little nervous at first,” Markus admitted. “But a lot of them have only had negative encounters with humans, and I feel like you could help change that.”

Simon whimpered with his aching need, letting Markus manhandle him however he wanted because damn it felt good. He wanted his alpha to mark him up and claim him so everyone would know who he truly belonged to. He wanted that with Markus even if a part of his heat-addled mind said this was wrong.

The blonde tugged at Markus’ top with a low whine. “M-Markus.. Alpha, please. Take me to bed and have your way with me.” He kissed along Markus’ face, trying to get him to look up so he could get a real kiss from the man he was in love with. “Please! I-I don’t have a nest or anything I’m supposed to.. I’m not a very good omega, not being prepared for you..”

That got Markus’s attention, and he paused his hungry peppered kisses to cradle Simon’s face. “I don’t care. I don’t care. Christ, Simon... Look at you.”

He granted Simon’s wish, kissing him hungrily on the mouth before lifting just a few inches off the ground to carry him to the nearest flat surface. Any would do at this point, just anything to finally have his way with Simon. They had all night... he could save the gentle lovemaking for when he was more in control of himself.

Simon changed into a pink fuzzy sweater and grey lounge pants while he thought over what he should do. He hadn’t thought about how cruel it could be to just let himself go like this. His friends would worry over it for ages, wondering if they could’ve seen the signs sooner and talked him into the surgery. At least if he forgot then he could eventually be Markus’ friend again. Perhaps then he could try not to fall so damn hard for him.

With a defeated sigh he left his bedroom to go tell Markus he may have made up his mind. The blonde smiled seeing the other man look around his home. He couldn’t help the thought of if they were together he could just walk over and wrap his arms around him. The thought sent him into another fit, coughing up two full blooms and a bud. Damn it.

The sound of Simon coughing roughly jerked Markus out of his thoughts, and he rushed over to Simon to put an arm around his shoulders. Maybe it wouldn’t help slow the disease, but it made Markus feel better.

He rubbed slow, calming circles into Simon’s back, wincing at the amount of flower he was coughing up. Christ, no... he didn’t want Simon to go so quickly. He wanted more time.
