I have wanted to post this for a long time now but I thought I’d post it when the time is right. Tbh i think there is no ‘right time’ to share something like this or voice your opinion on something.
Whenever I tell people that I’m a feminist, people often assume that I hate men, and whenever I say that the term feminism means equality, they say :
“then why is it called feminism?”
People, i would like to tell you that the term feminism was coined by Charles Fourier, an utopian socialist and French philosopher, who introduced the word feminisme (French) in 1837. It was introduced by a man who thought women did not have equal political and legal rights.
The meaning of this word has evolved with time. It now signifies equality for everyone. It means that a woman should be give equal pay for the same job, that women should be given equal punishment as men for the same crime. It signifies that we all are equal irrespective of our sexuality, gender, religion or nationality. Nobody is superior and no one inferior.
When I say I’m a feminist, i dont mean that I hate men but I want equality, i mean that I don’t want stereotypical judgement from anyone. I don’t want categorization or generalization. I don’t want sexism and I don’t want homophobia.
So if you believe in equal rights for everyone, if you think that women are as capable of doing something as men, if you think the lgbtqia+ community is as capable of love as straight people, then trust me, you are a feminist.
