"I’m really glad I took Jim’s class. It helped me grow my technical skills to a point where I feel comfortable rendering out a lot of subjects I was completely stumped by in the past. Now I can crosshatch and create new forms, and it’s making my drawing practice more dynamic and fun! Jim’s approach to teaching tough concepts is extremely insightful and easy to follow." - Jake, Winter online student Sign up here!
"Big Byrd" Richard E Byrd was one of the first people to fly over Antarctica in 1927. I wanted to capture how crazy that must have felt for the residents already living there... This was a final demo for my Sketching With Purpose 2 students. We investigated how sketching skills can be used to prepare for an ambitious illustration. Before beginning this painting, I did thorough studies of the subject matter and a lot of thumbnails and reference gathering. By the time I started my final draft, I was able to work mostly from imagination and invent what I needed to suit my narrative. Class registration opens soon, get on my mailing list to be the first to know! I've got a 20 minute painting timelapse with commentary on my youtube!

I've appreciated Jim's ability to weave in philosophy and human values, to help ground the idea of intentional mark making. He really wants to prepare his students with a foundation to help them as they go on their journeys. It was a great introduction and overview on a broad number of topics. I've tried to learn a lot of these topics before on my own, but it made a huge difference to take the class and see peer's work, and get direct feedback!" - Fall term student
