THE SUN IS sharp in the spring sky, cutting through clouds that didn’t exist in winter. The baseball field behind Hawkins High smells of freshly turned dirt, sunscreen, and the faint tang of the gym locker room. You’re walking past, bag slung over your shoulder, headphones tucked away because… well, sometimes you want to hear the world in full volume. You told Steve a few nights ago when you told him you’d be back for spring break that you’d like to see him, he told you he would be working but come by the school anytime until class finished and they could hang out. You told him not to worry, that you didn’t want to disturb his class but he told you not to be silly, he just wanted to spend time, any time, with you.

And then you see him. Steve Harrington. Coach Harrington, Lined up with the team, whistle dangling from his neck, sleeves rolled, sneakers scuffing the dirt as he demonstrates a throw. His hair is still that wild mess you can’t help but love, but his arms are stronger now, his stance steadier. He’s in control — he’s adulting — but the way he turns his head when he hears your footsteps? That’s all Steve.

You stop a few feet away, heart hammering. “Hey,” you breathe.

“Hey,” he answers, eyes locking with yours over the field. A small smile, just the corners of his mouth, but it’s enough to make your chest feel too tight.

The kids scatter as he blows the whistle again. You find yourself just… standing there, watching him, like time is pausing for this tiny bubble of spring afternoon.

I’ll melt myself to fit your mold

You think of the months you’ve spent away, the longing that’s been building, the small pangs of jealousy when you imagined him laughing with someone else, coaching, living his life without you there to nudge him sideways or tease him. He walks toward you after the kids run off. Sneakers crunching on dirt. Sunlight catching his hair. He’s closer now, still carrying that energy — protective, warm, aware of everything.

“You here for long?” he asks, voice casual but with an edge you can’t miss.

“Yeah,” you say, shrugging, though your fingers curl around the strap of your bag. “Just a long weekend, maybe longer..”

He studies you. Smiles faintly. “I was hoping you would.”

Something twists in your chest. That familiar mix of relief and fear.

You laugh nervously, shifting your weight. “I… I’ve missed this.”

“Me too,” he says quietly. “This… us… the field, the town…” His gaze flicks down at your hands, then back to your face. “…it’s been weird not having you around.” You want to reach for him. To close the distance. But there’s that gnawing fear — of yourself, of him, of letting the pull get too strong too fast.

He clears his throat. “Wanna run a few drills with me? Just… for old times’ sake?” You nod, heart leaping. Not because you care about the drills. Not really. But because it’s an excuse to stay near him. To feel the weight of his arm brushing past yours. To let the sun warm your skin while his presence presses softly against the edges of your nerves.

Later, after water bottles and laughter from the kids and the final bell rings, he sits down on the bleachers. You find a spot next to him. The sky is pale pink now. You don’t speak for a moment, just watch the clouds.

“College treating you okay?” he asks finally.

“Yeah,” you lie, softly, knowing he’ll see the cracks. “It’s… different.”

“You’ve changed,” he says, almost gently. “Stronger. Wiser. Scarier, maybe.”

You glance at him, and your stomach flips. He’s teasing, but it’s the soft kind of teasing that hides all the months he’s missed you, all the nights he’s thought about you, all the mornings he’s woken up hoping to hear your voice.

The feeling presses in your chest like a warning. You want him. You want everything. But the thought of letting yourself go fully — of falling — terrifies you. Steve nudges your shoulder lightly. “I’m glad you’re here,” he says. “Even if it’s just for a weekend.”

You can’t stop the smile. “Me too,” you whisper.

And for a few heartbeats, just sitting there on the bleachers, watching the sun sink over Hawkins High, everything feels possible.

The rest of the gang shows up at Steve’s family

Home late afternoon, like a chaotic storm of energy. Dustin’s chatting to Robin about god knows what, Max is teasing Lucas for tripping over his own feet while trying to carry snacks, and Mike and Nancy hover in the kitchen, like they’ve got a secret mission. Even Will lingers near the sidelines, quietly observing, smirking at your expressions.

You feel both comforted and overwhelmed. Hawkins in spring is bright and alive, but it’s also loaded with memories — with everything you left behind. And with him.

Steve steps in, trying to herd the kids after they’ve been pestering you all afternoon. “Alright, enough horsing around. We’ve got a table to lay,” he says, tone half-coaching, half-laughing.

You follow him onto the patio, letting the small crowd of kids disperse. There’s a rhythm here — his whistle, the calls, the clatter of cleats — but underneath it all, there’s you two.

He tosses a napkin to you. “Catch,” he says, and the familiar motion of his arms, the sound of his voice in the open air, makes your chest tighten.

You catch the napkins, and for a split second, you lock eyes. There’s something in his gaze that makes your pulse stutter — a mix of longing, amusement, and something unspoken.

“Nice catch,” he says softly, brushing imaginary dirt from your shoulder. You try not to lean into the touch. Fail spectacularly.

The kids finish their duties and go into the kitchen, leaving the two of you alone finishing the table setting. Steve leans against the table You lean down beside him, watching the clouds drift. Silence hangs heavy. “You’ve changed,” he says after a long pause. “Not bad… just… different.”

You smile, but it’s bittersweet. “Yeah… college does that. Makes you see yourself in ways Hawkins never could.”

His hand brushes yours lightly again. “I think… I’ve been afraid you’d see me too,” he admits. His voice is low, careful. “That you’d notice I’m still… me. Messy, chaotic… maybe not ready for everything.”

You can’t stop the knot of longing and fear twisting in your stomach. You want to lean into him. To let yourself fall. But the lyrics in your mind whisper warnings you can’t ignore. “I missed you,” you finally confess, voice trembling just a little. “I feel like i keep saying that, but i missed you more than I realized. More than I wanted to admit.”

His eyes soften. “Yeah. I’ve missed you too.” The words hang between you like a fragile bridge.

You both laugh softly, nervous, because neither of you is ready to cross that line — yet. Not completely. Not yet. But the pull, the undeniable weight of it, is in every brush of fingers, every shared glance. The sun dips lower, and the patio grows quiet. The gang has wandered off to get snacks and plan a movie marathon for the evening, leaving you and Steve alone.

He shifts closer. “You’re here for a short time, yeah? But… while you’re here…” His gaze holds yours. “We could… do something. Just us.”

The day turns into night and dinner has been and gone, theres beers, snacks, wine and mismatched chairs pulled around the living room. Max and Lucas bicker over a board game. Dustin recounts random activities of his first year of college Mike and will are in a corner chatting. Nancy and Robin trying to get Max and Lucas to shut up so they can continue the game.

You hover near the doorway, taking it all in. And then you see him. Steve. Leaning against the counter, casual, relaxed, but every inch of him radiating care and attentiveness. He notices you immediately. “Hey,” he says, softly.

You nod. “Hey.”

The room is noisy, chaotic, warm — but it all disappears for a moment. It’s just you and him.

The thought of Steve presses on your chest. Because you feel it — the pull, the want, the fear. Steve wants more. He has wanted more for months, you’ve known it in every glance, every word, every small joke that lingers too long. And of course you do too, but you’re fragile. Vulnerable. Afraid.

He crosses the room, careful not to draw attention, and sits next to you on the couch. Close enough to feel the warmth from him, to feel your hands nearly touch.

“You’ve been quiet since dinner,” he says gently, voice low. “I know you’re… thinking.”

You swallow. “I’m… just tired, I guess.”

“Yeah,” he murmurs. “I get that. College, life… it’s a lot. But I mean…” He hesitates, then leans slightly closer. “…I want this. I want… us. If you’re ready.”

Your heart tightens.

You want to reach for him, want to throw yourself into his arms, but the words stick in your throat. You’re scared. Not of him, not of love — of falling. Falling too fast, giving too much, being broken again.

“I…” you start, voice trembling. “I don’t… I can’t promise…”

Steve reaches out, brushing your hair back gently. “I know,” he says softly. “You don’t have to. Not yet.”

You let out a shaky laugh, leaning into the couch cushions. Safe. Warm. Him. But not safe enough to fall. Not yet.

He sighs, resting an arm on the back of the couch near you. “I’ll wait,” he says quietly. “For you. For however long it takes. Just… don’t go entirely.”

You blink back tears. You can’t promise more than that. But you squeeze his hand lightly. “I won’t,” you whisper.

The gang’s laughter floats in from the kitchen, Max’s teasing voice, Dustin’s loud recounting of some improbable story. Hawkins feels alive again, chaotic and imperfect and full of love. And in this small, quiet bubble on Steve’s couch, the two of you exist in a fragile space: hearts aching, wants unspoken, feelings simmering just beneath the surface.

You know you’ll leave in a few days. Steve knows it too. But for now… you’re together, and that’s enough to ache over, to pine for, to carry back to college with you. Because love in Hawkins isn’t easy. It’s messy, tentative, fragile. And maybe, one day, it will be safe.

YOU REMEMBER THAT thanksgiving in Hawkins is never quiet, well not anymore. There are way too many survivors in one room for quiet. The Wheeler house ends up hosting this year, long tables pushed together, mismatched chairs, folding ones dragged up from the basement. Joyce insists on bringing half the food anyway, someone burns the rolls and someone forgets cranberry sauce. It’s loud before you even make it through the door. When you step inside, the smell hits you first — turkey, cinnamon, something buttery and familiar. Then the noise.

Dustin arguing about whether Die Hard counts as a Thanksgiving movie, Lucas laughing too loud, Max rolling her eyes but smiling anyway and Mike pretending he’s not excited to see you. Will is sat in the corner with a smile on his face whilst watching the scene unfold between his friends.

Nancy and Robin are in the kitchen with Mrs Wheeler and Joyce whilst they are prepping the dinner and the dads are chatting over a beer with the only two subjects they have in common. Your parents are there, your dad and brother are talking to Jonathan about his college movie, your mother visibly bored by the conversation so Robin takes her away and talks about her college life, how your mom is doing at work & selling their house. They giggle as they talk, Robin and your mom have always been close.

And then Steve. He’s in the kitchen too, sleeves rolled, helping Mrs. Wheeler carve the turkey like he’s been doing it his whole life. He looks up when the door shuts behind you.

When he sees you, he freezes, just for a second and then his whole face softens. You forgot how grounding that look is. “You made it,” he says, stepping toward you. Like it wasn’t a question, Like you always would.

Everyone hugs you at once, It’s suffocating and overwhelming and perfect. “You’re happy, you’re happy,” someone teases — probably Dustin — because you must look dazed standing there in the middle of them all. You try to laugh. Try hard as you may, though, there’s still that strange buzz under your skin. That feeling like you’re watching through ice-blurred glass. Like everything is real but slightly distant.

College felt like that too. Bright and loud and tantalizing — but never fully yours. Now you’re back in Hawkins and it’s loud in a different way.

You end up wedged between Steve and Max at the table. Lucas across from you, Dustin at the head like he appointed himself leader of Thanksgiving. The table overflows with food and elbows and stories. Someone makes a joke about “raising a toast to the things we love most,” and the room erupts into cheers, You lift your glass. But for a split second, you see it differently. Turning to smoke.

Everything you love has almost disappeared at least once. The thought hits hard. Your stomach drops. Voices blur together. The room tilts just slightly. Nauseated. Isolation in a house full of people.

It’s not dramatic — you don’t collapse. You don’t panic but your chest tightens and Steve feels it, though He doesn’t look at you immediately, he just shifts his knee against yours under the table.

Grounding. You inhale slowly. Under all of the haze and the gaze, you just need a place to lie down.

You squeeze his hand under the table and squeezes back with No questions.

Later, after pie and too much soda and an intense debate about whether Hawkins High should retire its mascot (long story), everyone migrates to the living room.

Blankets. Floor cushions. Too many bodies in one space. It’s chaotic, familiar and comforting. Helter skelter. And somehow… safe.

You sit on the floor with your back against the couch. Steve slides down beside you without asking. Your shoulder brushes his, you don’t move away. “I’m not leaving the house today,” you murmur quietly, almost to yourself.

He hears you anyway. “Good,” he says.

“But i feel like i’ve run out of words I can say.”

“You don’t need any,” he replies.

You glance at him. The soft lamp light catches in his eyes. For months at school, you felt like you were performing survival. Nothing you see here is as it appears. You were smiling in lecture halls, studying in crowded libraries, telling everyone here you were thriving. But half the time you felt like you were calling in sick to the rest of the year.

Just trying to get through. Here, though? No one expects perfection.

Max throws popcorn at Lucas, Dustin dramatically recounts something that absolutely did not happen that way. Mike is somewhat distant but thats understandable with the lack of El, he sits next

Joyce watches all of you like she’s memorizing the scene. You feel the weight in your chest shift.

“I had hopes,” you admit quietly to Steve. “But I didn’t think I could keep going with the show.”

He turns his head slightly toward you. “You don’t have to do that here,” he says.

“I know.” And this time, you mean it.

At some point, the conversation splits into smaller ones. The room dims. People settle.

“No.” He waits. “I’d start over from here,” you say. “With this.” Not before the Upside Down. Not before the trauma. But here. Rebuilt. Scarred. Still together.

He exhales slowly. “That,” he says, “I can do.”

You lace your fingers with his, The gang is laughing again. Too loud. Too much. Too alive. Helter skelter in the best possible way. And for the first time in months, the noise doesn’t feel like a ballroom closing in.

It feels like home.You don’t need to leave, You don’t need to perform, you don’t need to go on with the show, you just stay. HAWKINS IS REBUILDING again. Boarded-up windows replaced with fresh glass. New paint over old scars. The “For Sale” sign still crooked outside your childhood house because no one ever fixed it right. You really didn’t think you’d come back this soon. College was supposed to feel like freedom but Instead it felt like floating too far from shore. You step out of your car with your campus duffel slung over your shoulder, the autumn air sharp in your lungs. It smells like leaves and something faintly metallic — a reminder that the ground beneath this town once split open.

You left after everything ended, after the gates sealed, after the funerals… After the night Steve kissed your forehead and told you to go chase something bigger than Hawkins.

You thought leaving would make it easier. It didn’t.

You find him at the new Family Video — relocated, freshly painted, somehow still clinging to existence like it always has. He’s outside, sitting on the hood of his car, talking to Dustin. You smile at the memories the shop held, and how he still must swing by the shop when he’s not coaching at school.

Dustin Henderson spots you first. His mouth falls open, “Holy— is that— STEVE.”

Steve grumbles at Dustin interrupting him, and turns and suddenly, the world tilts.

He stands slowly,You haven’t seen him in months. He looks broader. More tired. More… solid. Like someone who stayed and carried the weight of things. For a second neither of you move then Dustin mutters something about “giving you idiots space” and disappears inside.

Now it’s just you, “Hey,” you say. It sounds too small.

Steve lets out a breath that almost trembles. “Hey.”

Silence stretches, thick with everything unsaid.

I think the sun has parted with the clouds, They finally put their differences behind them for a while, And I can feel the heat kissing my skin, I can feel the blood rushing back in…

Standing this close feels like sunlight after a brutal winter. You didn’t realize how numb you’d been.“You cut your hair,” he says.

“You noticed.”

“Of course I noticed.” His voice is steady. His eyes aren’t.

“How’s college?” he asks. Loaded question.

You swallow. “It’s… good.” Lie.

“It’s different.” Truth.

“I’ve been pretty bad,” you admit before you can stop yourself. The words spill out like confession. “But I am coming back. I just— I needed to see if I could be someone outside of here.”

Outside of him, he nods slowly. “I get that.” Do you? Because part of you expected him to be angry, To tell you that you left him in a town full of ghosts. Instead he just looks relieved you’re standing here.

“Hello again, dear stranger,” you say softly.

His lips twitch. “Dear stranger?” he repeats.

You shrug, heart pounding. “That’s what it feels like.” He steps closer, careful — like approaching a wild animal that might bolt.

“I hope you know I’ve missed ya,” you whisper.

His jaw tightens.

“How have you been?” you ask.

He laughs quietly, but there’s no humor in it. “I’ve been pretty bad.”

You both know what that means. Nightmares. Silence. Learning how to live without constant crisis. Learning how to live without you.

“But I’m not as sad,” he adds carefully, “when I know you’re okay.” That cracks something open inside your chest.

“I said some things before I left,” you murmur. “About not wanting to be stuck here. About being scared I’d never grow if I stayed.” You wince. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“I know,” he says gently.

“I promised more than I should have and ruined everything,” you continue, voice breaking. “I said I’d visit every month. I said distance wouldn’t change us.”

“Hello again,” he murmurs. “Let’s start there.” Your breath hitches. “I’ll be seeing you again?” he asks quietly. You think about campus, about finals, about the way Hawkins still feels like gravity.

“I’m coming back for Thanksgiving,” you say.

His lips curve slightly. “And after that?”

You lace your fingers with his, “I don’t know where I end up,” you admit. “But I don’t want a life that doesn’t have you in it.”

That’s the truth, not a promise of forever but a choice. Again.

“I’ve been pretty bad,” you whisper, forehead resting against his chest, His arms wrap around you instantly. “But I am not as sad.”

He exhales into your hair. “I’ll be seeing you again,” he says. You smile against him. “Yeah, Harrington.”

The town is rebuilding and so are you. Both. And so, maybe love isn’t about never leaving, Maybe it’s about coming back. “I’ll be seeing you again.”
