I decided to give the Retrogasm art competition a shot, this an art contest where the idea is to take an old video game character and make an updated current gen model. I initially picked Ly from Rayman 2, but then decided to make Rayman too because I want to recreate this concept art: https://raymanpc.com/wiki/en/File:RaymanLySketch02.jpg I’ve been neglecting to post updates here on tumblr, you can see a few earlier versions on my twitter. There’s only about 14 days left at this point, I just have to pose these 2 and call it done.
Normally I just sculpt these characters in Zbrush and then post a Keyshot render. However, for the past couple months I’ve been working for a game studio (take a wild guess what I’m working on, it’s something really special). So now I’m learning how to build for a game engine by baking maps, texturing in Substance Painter, and using Marmoset Toolbag to get renders that are closer to how things would look in an engine. So on Ly and Rayman here I’m using more of an actual game workflow instead of just chucking a hi poly in KS (although these are still a little higher rez and separated into more peices than what I would do on a job).
