Dussehra 2021
Dussehra 2021: The Story Behind the Festival
Dussehra 2021 Date: Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival that marks the end of Navratri. In the year 2021, Dussehra will be celebrated on October 15, Friday.
Section 1: Story behind the festival
The festival of Dussehra marks the victorious return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after killing Ravana, the King of the demons, the night before. In 15th century AD, the month of September was considered as the month of death for Lord Rama. This led to the muhurta being celebrated after that, that too at a later date.
Section 2: History of Dussehra
Dussehra celebration has its origins from Lord Ram, the son of King Dashrath of Ayodhya. Lord Ram’s sister Janaki was engaged to the younger brother of King Dashrath but when the love between Ram and his sister came to be known, Dashrath broke his sister’s engagement and went to war with Lord Ram. Dashrath’s brother, Kaalratri (called Balram today) was killed in battle.
What is Dussehra?
This festival is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. It is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana.
What is celebrated?
The festival is a 10-day festival which is celebrated in the month of Ashvin, which is known as the Hindu Sammelan in calendar months of March and April. The festival is also known as the Vijayadashami.
History of the festival
The festival is celebrated by people of all castes and creed.
The festival is also celebrated by people in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The main worship of the festival is Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and Goddess Laxmi. These three divine figures are worshipped as the three forms of God and hence, the festival is known as Vijayadashami.
Celebration of good over evil
Dussehra is celebrated every year in India on the tenth day of Navratri, the eight-day festival of self-pity. The festival marks the end of the auspicious fast-a fast known as Navaratri fast.
Worship of Lord Dussehra
Dussehra is celebrated to commemorate the end of war between Lord Krishna and the demon king Ravana. The festival was celebrated by Lord Krishna for the liberation of his wife Kaikeyi from the clutches of the demon king Ravana.
The day before Dussehra, the goddess Durga performs a puja and worship Lord Dussehra at the Vishwanath Temple in Ayodhya. Durga is also known as Vishnu's consort.
Many Hindus celebrate the day with special prayers. On this auspicious day, they burn huge piles of tyres and set them on fire. The burning symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
The significance of the festival
Dussehra is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. Hindus believe that Lord Ram sacrificed his wife Kaikeyi to save his son Lord Rama from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. The actual event took place in the tenth month of the lunar calendar, after Lord Rama went on his 12-year exile from his home to protect his people from Ravana's anger.
To commemorate the event, Lord Ram spent the next nine years in the forests of Lanka, where he learnt to ride the wild elephant Vibhishana and obtained weapons from him. He returned to his kingdom Ayodhya in the fifteenth year of his exile, triumphant and married Goddess Sita.
Conclusion
Dussehra is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Lord Ram and his army over Ravana and his demon army. It is a day filled with joy and fervour.
Almost all festivals are a part of our culture. But, Dussehra is one of the most popular festivals celebrated all over the country. On the auspicious day, Hindus commemorate the destruction of the evil Ravan with pomp and glory and also remember their holy lord Ram.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ram was exiled from Ayodhya for 14 years and he spent the period of exile in the forests. Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya in the month of Ashwin in the year 1809 and founded a new kingdom, Ayodhya. Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami.
