james potter isnt a tortured soul. james potter isnt the angst ridden, angry and upset boy that he can be written as. 

james potter is the one who is all smiles and laughs and big, sweeping gestures of kindness when one of the boys needs it– or rather even his small, seemingly insignificant instances of friendship could mean the world to a kid who previously knew nothing about what it means to be truly included and wholly valued. james potter doesnt understand why peter feels insecure sometimes, because who couldnt love pete with those shy laughs and his eye for trouble? and james potter makes goddamn sure that remus doesnt feel like a monster but like one of the snarkiest, slyest kids he’s ever had the fortune to meet. james potter opens his heart and his home to sirius, because why wouldnt he do that for his brother? and james potter falls in love with lily evans, completely and willingly, during a time where their association would mean the end of his protection that he received because of his pureblood, because james potter never wanted to be concerned with politics anyway. james potter measures people by their potential for good and loyalty and james potter trusts those he deems worthy to the end of the line, because james potter can.

of lily + the marauders, james has the best home life. born to elderly parents with a fortune, born to a line of purebloods who never exactly did what was expected, a loved and adored little boy who wanted to be a chivalrous, rough-housing gryffindor like his dad. when it comes down to it, it is james who is the steady rock for each one of them to rely on and grow with because james hasnt had to deal with the hurdles that each of the others have faced.

james is sirius’ stability, his self-chosen brother. james is lily’s protection and her grounding in the wizarding world. james potter is surrounded by misfits that society would have discarded– a blood traitor, a werewolf, a supposedly untalented and easily forgotten boy, and a mudblood– because there is just something about james potter’s very essence that oozes goodness and trustworthiness and a disgust towards what would harm those he loves.

this is not to say that james potter didn’t have a LOT of growth to do– james was a cocky, arrogant kid who had to learn his limits and understand the implications of his actions. but at his core, james potter has always been the one with a happy and whole heart, whose only hope was that his friendship meant something good and that he left people a little better off than when he found them.
