It seems like some folks in 911 fandom need a little history lesson re: why people are side-eyeing #LetBuckFuck!
Oliver Stark, post episode 8x06 (aka the break up) "...I have texted Tim [Minear] on a number of occasions. … Wait, am I allowed to curse? OK, I text him all the time and just write "hashtag Let Buck F–k," because I do think he should go out and have some fun. I think he deserves it. He should figure some things out and see what he likes. I think one time when I texted Tim I referenced the opening montage of Wedding Crashers where it's just the two of them bedding different women. I was like, "Can we just do that?" Buck is bisexual, so we'll go guy, guy, girl, girl, guy, guy … I don't know, maybe that wouldn't work on this show." [x]
The issue is not and will never be Buck engaging in casual sex. The issue is OLIVER STARK believing Buck needs to fuck as many people as possible - and suggesting the writers alternate genders in a montage - in order to "prove" he's actually bisexual. The issue is OLIVER STARK presenting #LetBuckFuck as a more entertaining/acceptable story about bisexuality than the one where his character continues to strive for a love that overcomes all obstacles regardless of the person's gender. Buck falls in love with a woman again? Cool. Why does Oliver think Buck's gotta fuck his way through California to find her?
Could I respectfully disagree here? Unless there’s a portion of this interview I’m forgetting (which is possible, I barely read interviews to begin with), this interview felt more like Oliver saying he thinks Buck would enjoy a period of casual post-breakup sex, and since he’s come out, that can now include men and women. Not that he needs to fuck a slew of alternating guys and girls to prove he’s bisexual.
I’ve struggled with the idea that we should only view Oliver’s comments through a biphobic lense since I first learned of the fandom’s reaction to that interview. That assigns a lot of negative/ignorant intent to his words that can easily be interpreted differently. From the very first episode, the show established that Buck loves to fuck (lol). He’s now broken up with what he described as his most transformative relationship. He’s sad, he’s confused why it ended, he wants to reach out to Tommy again… these are all canon facts. And if he went through a phase addressing those emotions through casual sex that now could include other genders since he’s come out, I think Buck would have enjoyed that. And as a bisexual person myself, I don’t consider that perspective biphobic.
If others do, that’s their right but I don’t think that’s the only way (or the best way) to interpret those comments.
Respectfully, it’s fine if you don’t see a problem with what he said because the entire point of the post is to outline why others don’t agree with associating casual sex to bisexuality - and only bisexuality - after years of Buck purposely not repeating the habit because he didn’t want to be that guy anymore.
And if you go read the interview, which I have linked, you will see I actually left out the sentence before everything (in hindsight, I should have included) where he specifically says #LetBuckFuck doesn’t need to be tied to Tommy because it should come AFTER he’s done “grieving” the end of the relationship.
(Never mind admitting he asked Tim all the time to make it happen. Not “I thought it’d be a good idea once I read the script for episode six.” All the time. Nobody knows what the fuck that even means, but it sure sounds like he was already looking ahead when his on-screen relationship wasn’t yet over.)
Clock it, Oliver wanted Buck fucking around WHILE BuckTommy were presumably still in a good place. Tim listens to his actors, now Oliver will get exactly what he always wanted for his character.
