Most likely attribute. It means yellow, and probably referred to the original ancestor's hair, but it could also have been something about where he lived.
Everything I'm coming up with says it's something along the lines of "custodian of the forest". ...of course, House of Names also says we have a friggin' family crest, which I am dubious about. I mean, maybe some family with that name somewhere had a family crest, but I doubt they're related to me.
