I saw your art critique post and thought I'd share something I really like about my style that you could try. Body segmenting. I like to animate, and overly complex designs don't animate well.
Not an OC but here is Blister
See how the legs are segmented by color? How the tail is broken up, how the eyebrows are placed? These parts help me keep track of details and their locations, otherwise my sail might slide around, or my legs would get longer or shorter during movement.
Here is a young Darkstalker headshot.
The spines are simplified, the eyes are large, there are plenty of Nightwing traits that separate him from sandwings other than just his color
And here is older Darkstalker.
It's still the same character, but his outline has changed. He's sharper and spinier, but still easy to animate.
Body segmenting helps me break down and simplify characters for animation, it helps me keep track of my dragons body proportions, and with a bit of practice allows me to make small changes to my character that show age.

I haven't done much animating but I have done a small amount. I haven't tried to animate anything for nearly a year but I did segment the body a similar way. But if I were to animate again I might segment the body like this:
I assume this is what you mean. This would certainly help maintain scale patterning and body shape while in motion.

Tbh I wouldn't consider this finished but I don't really have the patience to animate anything so I never ended up adding certain things like breathing or head movements. I believe this is technically a page doll because of how I animated it but correct me if I'm wrong lol
