PAPER GENIUS: Richard Sweeney

Originally from Huddersfield, England, Richard Sweeney discovered a natural talent for sculpture at Batley School of Art and Design in 2002, which led him to the study of Three Dimensional Design at the Manchester Metropolitan University. There he concentrated on the hands-on manipulation of paper to create design models, which ultimately developed into sculptural pieces in their own right.

Richard’s practice combines the disciplines of design, photography, craft and sculpture, resulting in a varied output of work including graphic design and public sculpture commissions. Richard seeks to maintain an experimental, hand-on approach, utilising the unique properties of often mundane materials to discover unique sculptural forms.

He has lectured at universities internationally and regularly holds workshops to share his knowledge of paper folding and construction techniques. Richard is represented by Victor Felix Gallery, London.

2015 Sticker Calendar by Nendo

A calendar with daily peel-away stickers.

Peeling away one sticker each day gradually reveals the scenery of the following season decorating the page, allowing you to feel the gradational changing of the seasons as each fades into the next. Peeling away stickers also reveals special illustrations on certain days like Valentine’s Day or Christmas, and a whimsical cat can be found hidden somewhere on each page. Twists like these are interspersed throughout and make peeling away the stickers fun. The design breathes new life into the sticker backing, which would normally serve no purpose but to hold the stickers.

Sky Cycle: A Pedal Powered Roller Coaster in Japan | Via

Located in Washuzan Highland Amusement Park in Okayama city in Japan, the Sky Cycle is a pedal-powered roller coaster that requires riders to pedal all the way around, rather than just sit back and enjoy. The roller coaster is built over a hilly terrain and consists of a pair of elevated rails. The carts that ride the roller coaster looks like side by side tandem bikes, with baskets in the front for storing belongings, and brakes just like in a real bicycle. While there are no loops and spectacular drops, riding the Sky Cycle will still send your heart racing. The rails are located four stories above the ground. The carts are open and there are no guard rails either. Aside from a simple seat belt, there is little to ensure that riders do not fall off their seat and to certain death below. The view of the Shimotsui-Seto Bridge in the background is spectacular though.
