listen it’s none of my business but when you say “Bilbo would have been better for taking the Ring” and then state “Frodo’s character was mishandled” I think maybe you like the Lord of the Rings inside your head more than the one actually written 💀 as if it wasn’t stated multiple times both in the text and by Tolkien himself why Frodo was the Ringbearer. Pleeeeeaaaase PLEEEEAAASE stop giving me gray hairs and take an interest in the text you read and it’s deeper meanings beyond power scaling characters, favoritism and finding the “most efficient way to take the ring to Mordor”. The debates about who should have taken the Ring are the exact same as “they should have flown the eagles to Mordor” except it’s spoken by people who genuinely are avid fans of the books and movies.

Oooh now I get why this scene stuck in my mind after Dad read Lord of the Rings to me.

I was mad Frodo wasn't naked in this scene in the movie. There is a certain level of violation that wasn't communicated because of it, of Frodo being stripped of everything and laid bare to the face of evil. Kind of a physical manifestation of what has already happened within his own mind between him and the Ring.

The soil testing equipment on Curiosity makes a buzzing noise and the pitch of the noise changes depending on what part of an experiment Curiosity is performing, this is the way Curiosity sings to itself.

So some of the finest minds currently alive decided to take incredibly expensive important scientific equipment and mess with it until they worked out how to move in just the right way to sing Happy Birthday, then someone made a cake on Curiosity’s birthday and took it into Mission control so that a room full of brilliant scientists and engineers could throw a birthday party for a non-autonomous robot 225 million kilometres away and listen to it sing the first ever song sung on Mars*, which was Happy Birthday.

This isn’t a sad story, this a happy story about the ridiculousness of humans and the way we love things. We built a little robot and called it Curiosity and flung it into the star to go and explore places we can’t get to because it’s name is in our nature and then just because we could, we taught it how to sing.

That’s not sad, that’s awesome.

*this is different from the first song ever played on mars (Reach For The Stars by Will.I.Am) which happened the year before, singing is different from playing

Curiosity celebrates her 14th Martian birthday this week and she’s still trucking along in Gale Crater where she’s sampling Martian soil to learn about the geology and climate and teach us all about the ancient lakes that used to cover our nearest neighbor!

Thank you to everyone who keeps this post queued up so I never forget her special day. I love how much love this post gets every year.

//no, but he is pretty aspec-coded and a lot of aspec people (including me) see themselves in him and in the lack of any romantic/sexual subplot, even though romance and/or sex is pretty expected in fiction, even though it usually adds nothing to the story. most people in fandom are allo (since most people in general are allo) and will treat every character as allo unless it is explicitly stated that theyre aspec (and even then, frequently).
