i like that elijah wood's nails are kinda fucked up in the lord of the rings movies. they offered him a hand double but he insisted on doing it with his real hands. to me it adds a lot to frodo's character. his hands are all jacked up, but not like sam's are. sam's hands are laborer hands, calloused and dirty. frodo is a landowner who by all means should have soft delicate poet hands. but instead the nails are "chewed down to the quick" as sir ian mckellan describes it in behind-the-scenes commentary. they're beat up from self-inflicted wounds. there's an invisible struggle there that foreshadows and parallels his struggle with the ring and how its power eats him up from the inside. he could have had a soft life. he could have had prettyboy hands. but instead he has this terrible burden he can't save himself from, one that tears him up from the inside out.

I keep thinking about this absolute masterpiece of a line because I know it's supposed to be a symbolic vision of Frodo's tragedy and the return of the Ring to his shoulders but it also implies that

One, Sam has just stopped at his tracks during a life saving mission to silently admire the shine of Frodo's skin. Two, he has somehow managed to see that moment of his skin turning scarlet under a singular Mordor lamplight that is definitely not shining strong enough for him to be so bewildered about it and three, the guy is just standing there staring at Frodo just pacing there naked and Frodo managed to pace twice before Sam said anything.

Sam, my dear, this is so not the time for this. I beg you to be normal for once but you aren't capable of that.

sleep during recovery is so so important to me. hypervigilant whumpee choosing a small, enclosed space for sleep, in order to feel safe. only getting sleep for a few hours at a time, and being constantly exhausted. getting horrid nightmares every night, hating the thought of even laying down out of fear of them.

finally conking out at an unexpected time... falling asleep on caretaker's chest, taking a nap on the couch, falling asleep at their desk as they were working on something. caretaker picking them up and carrying them to bed, with whumpee unsure how they feel about it in the morning... caretaker surprised to see whumpee looking calm and relaxed for the first time....
