at a party:
me: *slides the dj $20* play Tchaikovsky’s fourth symphony
@de-es-ce-ha is this you
Isn’t everyone? Tchaik 4 is an absolute BANGER
Ladies, if he
-leaves you on read
-never checks your snapchat story
-wears glasses
-wrote a string quartet as his suicide note
-is under constant threat of being sent to a russian gulag
-uses the DSCH motif
That’s not your man, that’s Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich.
music is bad
Clearly you’ve never listened to Tchaikovsky
I’ve seen a lot of curious people wanting to dive into classical music but don’t know where to start, so I have written out a list of pieces to listen to depending on mood. I’ve only put out a few, but please add more if you want to. hope this helps y’all out. :)

1812 overture
symphony no. 5, finale (tchaikovsky) (added by viola-ology)

hoedown (copland)
bacchanale
spring (from the four seasons) (be careful, if you listen to this too much you’ll start hating it)
la gazza ladra
death and the maiden (schubert)
if you are angry and you want to take a baseball bat and start hitting a bush:
dance of the knights (from the romeo and juliet suite by prokofiev)
winter, mvt. 1 (from the four seasons)

also, thank you to viola-ology and iwillsavemyworld for adding on! if you would like to add on your own suggestions, please reblog and add on or message me so I can give you credit for the suggestion!
I love this list!
Don’t get them stuck in your head you’ll never find them again if you don’t have this post saved fair warning. “That one song with the really killer flute bit,” doesn’t work as a song search.
@orpheustheviola Found it for you.
Thanks for reblogging it for me!
I never screamed louder in my life. I’m sorry op, but I’m going to have to make some MAJOR adjustments. (Oh, and if anyone is willing to add on here, feel free to do so!)
*cracks knuckles before letting out a war cry*
LET’S DO THIS!
Stereotypical delightful classical music:
They all are
If you need to chill:
Other than Brahms famous lullaby (or any other lullabies), GOOD LUCK. Composers are just a bunch of angsty/drunk/brooding teenagers that took out their spite through compositions
If you need to sleep:
See “If you need to chill”
If you need to wake up
Surely the cannons of 1812 Overture will do just the trick
If you are feeling very proud:
If you are lucky, Wagner’s composition might give you a totally unessecary boost of confidence that will turn you into a complete meglomaniac.
To reverse the effects, remember Wagner the person!
WARNING!
DO NOT MIX WAGNER THE PERSON WITH WAGNER THE MUSICIAN; ALTHOUGH THEY ARE RELATED, IT’S COMPLETE IGNORANCE TO IGNORE WAGNER’S PROFOUND WORKS JUST BECAUSE HE WAS…you know
If you feel really excited:
Marches should do the trick
Like Stars and Stripes Forever never fails to get me excited
It’s insufferable, but I love it
If you are angry:
BEEF OVEN CUZ GERMAN ANGST
SHOSTAKOVICH BECAUSE STALIN CAN GO [censored]
If you want to cry for a really long time
See “if you are angry”
If you really want to feel like you’re on an adventure
OPERAS! THAT’S THE POINT
For most of them at least
Epic film scores. AND I MEAN EPIC. With lots of musicians like “Lord of the Rings” and “Star Wars”
Anything with a narrative directly associated with it
I FORGOT ABOUT “THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE”
…I’m sorry Mickey. I have forsaken thee.
If you want chills:
Night on Bald Mountain
A lot of choral pieces sound quite chilling
Romantic era composers!!!
If you want to study:
Good
Luck
If you really want to dance:
CUBAN OVERTURE
Waltzes and minuets
They’re made for that purpose
MAMBO
You can fite me for this; you will NOT disrespect Leonard Bernstein
Not on my watch…
Oh, and unleash your inner ballet dancer with ballets of all kinds!
WARNING! RITE OF SPRING CAUSED RIOTS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
If you want to start bouncing in your chair:
See “If you really want to dance”
That said, if you’re not moving your body to some degree while listening to classical music, you are wEAK.
If you’re about to pass out and need energy:
See “if you are feeling excited” and “if you need to wake up.”
If you want to hear suspense in music:
Firebird is most notorious for making a woman scream
SWAN LAKE IT JUST BUILDS AND BUILDS AND THEN THE FINALE
*sobs*
If you want a jazzy/classical feel
George Gershwin: Ultimate mixer of jazz and classical music and my life long love
If you want to feel emotion with no explanation:
ROMANTIC COMPOSERS
If you want to sit back and have a nice cup of tea:
Waltzes and Minuets perhaps
Maybe The Four Seasons
Although I don’t suggest Winter
Pieces that don’t have a valid explanation:
…I’m sorry
…But they all have a valid explanation
…We just don’t know the explanation…yet
CURSE YOU ENIGMA VARIATIONS
Pieces that just sound really cool:
THEY ALL DO
If you feel like listening to concertos all day (which I totally reccomend):
Shostakovich’s Cello Concertos are lit
And if you hate classical music in general:
Don’t you dare put 4'33" on there!
The reason that piece was created was to challenge the notion of what we consider music
That’s why 4'33" is so legendary!
And you know what?
That’s why all classical music is legendary!
Each piece, each movement, each composer writes music in response to something that happened before
Classical music is such a difficult term to define simply because of its rich and complex history. With clasical musicians and composers turning to film, tv, and video games as another way to compose music, the definition of “classical music” has never been more broad and confusing.
It’s hard to hate classical musi, because at this point, what is classical music? I don’t know; you tell me.
Again, feel free to add onto this new list guys!
Or should I say…Liszt?
…I’ll go away for now.
(Op, this was in no way meant to insult or reject your post. There were some other classical musicblrs, myself included, that strongly disagreed; it’s perfectly fine though! Music is extremely subjective to completely different opinions. I also apoligize if I sounded like a nerd gone crazy, but I’ll be honest, I am.)
I arranged Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony for an orchestra consisting of toy instruments
why is e major such a good key
pokemon rbgy used it a lot
