We were walking to yours one night after dinner in the neighbourhood and we were a little drunk, a little silly, pressing our bodies against the cold, wishing we could press them together. We started the age old conversation, people are bad people are good what is inherent to human nature? I pointed to the cement blocks on each side of the street, windows shining on a Friday night, so many windows. How many windows in a flat? How many flats in a block? How many people all living on the same street, mere inches from each other?

And then, and then, with all these people, all having completely different lives, wants, needs, stories... What's the thing that we all want? Is it not to be loved? To be cared for? To have someone know how you like your coffee? To have someone keep the train door open for you? For someone to ask about your day and listen? Don't we all just want love?

I was crying by that point, trying to hide it, and if there's ever a reason to love you, it's in the way you pretended not to notice, hugged me tight against your side and kissed the top of my head. You didn't say anything until we arrived home.

I groom one of these guys every week and he’s quite possibly the love of my life. We play a game called “brush, brush, kiss” because as long as I say “brushbrushbrushbrushbrush” he’ll stand nicely, but the second he gets impatient or I need a break I say “KISS” and he explodes into a ball of joy and kisses my entire face and anywhere else he can reach.
